  • Two Parents & A Podcast

The death of hosting, revisiting childhood hobbies & what do you do if your kid gets hit?!

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Wednesday!! Getting ahead of this: YES - Alex & Harrison are in the wrong seats (#SocialDistancing). We open with the moments you realize you're THE parent of the house: Alex packing a pizza-and-banana lunch for dance class, Harrison standing in the yard with the plumber feeling like his dad.. and the one that reminded Alex of her childhood: clacking around in heels before Dear Media by Day, hoping Tate remembers the sound the way she remembers her mom's. Plus a DM that's changing our vocabulary: when you're putting on makeup (or heels!!) in front of your daughter, say mom is getting FANCY, not pretty.. because she's always pretty, with or without it. Then we break our own podcast rule to talk about the weather (a storm is coming and Jules flies out in the THICK of it), padel lesson one is complete (drenched, humbled, hooked), and Jules walks us through her Europe itinerary.. or total lack of one. Milan to Florence to a wedding to Santa Margherita to the south of France, with essentially nothing planned. Send her your suggestions!! On the homefront: SLEEP UPDATES! Rocky's progress and Tate's new move of joining us in bed. Then our internet convos: the unspoken rules of men's handshakes (dap, shake or bro hug??), and the big one: hosting in America has collapsed from 42% of people hosting monthly in 1975 to 12% today. We get into why, and our whole case: hosting does not need to be complicated. Monday we texted friends "we're having burgers tonight" and that was the invite. DoorDash counts. Paper plates count. Bring back hosting!! Next: OU vs. Texas week in a house divided (Tate is picking who Harrison bets on lol), the Brooklyn bathroom with a 10 minute TIMER, the case for revisiting your childhood hobbies (what was yours?!), and should we do a Survivor bracket?! And we close with the one we really want your input on: if your kid gets hit or bitten, what do you teach them to do? We walk through the options, where we've landed for now, and why this might be a Dr. Brown question. Tell us what's worked for your family. Hope everyone has a great week :-) LOVE YOU GUYS! In this Doctor’s Desk episode, Justin and Kylie unpack a huge new scientific review published in Nature that analysed 183 wellbeing studies involving nearly 23,000 people worldwide. The conclusion? You don’t need the perfect routine, expensive programs, or hours of free time to feel better. You just need to do something. From exercise and mindfulness to yoga, gratitude, therapy, and simple self-awareness practices, the research shows that consistent small actions have a powerful impact on mental health and happiness. My PDA Parenting Rock Bottom (And What Finally Got Us Out!)

I am sharing something a bit different in this episode. If you are parenting a PDA child, or any autistic, neurodivergent, ADHD, or intersecting neurodivergent profile, and they melt down over things that seem so small, and you are exhausted trying to figure out why nothing is working, this episode is for you. I am walking you through why, and what actually helps, through my own rock bottom story of parenting a PDA autistic child. If you have been feeling like you are the problem, like you are failing despite trying harder than you ever have at anything, I want to offer you a reframe. It is not you. It is the map you were given. Generic, traditional, generational parenting advice was never built for a PDA nervous system, and no amount of effort will make the wrong tools work. Key takeaways from this episode: If you are exhausted, second-guessing yourself, and feeling like you are failing despite trying harder than ever, it is not you. It is the map you were given. Traditional parenting advice was never built with a PDA nervous system in mind, and no amount of effort will make the wrong tools work for your child. Every PDA child is different. What works for one family will not work for another, and generic frameworks applied without differentiation are one of the biggest reasons families stay stuck. Coming out of burnout is possible, and it is not a quick fix. It takes time, the right approach, and support from people who understand what you are actually navigating. One of the biggest shifts in PDA parenting recovery happens when parents stop trying to do it alone. I also share my own rock bottom story: 3am, my son flicking the lights on and off, me sinking down the wall in tears after hours of fighting to get him back to sleep. In the moment I gave up trying to fix it, my son connected with me. That was the moment I realised this really is his nervous system, and it started a full parenting overhaul for our family. My husband and I are no longer walking on eggshells, no longer exhausted in the way we were, and my son came fully out of his PDA autistic burnout. Grounded in PDA: your six-month transformation from burnout to relief Grounded in PDA is my signature program. A six-month transformation for parents supporting their PDA child, teen or young adult out of burnout. This is not positioned as a quick fix because quick fixes do not work. It is the three-pillar framework I have built from almost 15 years of professional experience, my own late diagnosis as autistic, ADHD and PDA, and parenting my own PDA children. Doors are open now for a small cohort starting 5 October. If you feel ready, or if you have questions and want more information before deciding, DM me the words "I'm ready" on Instagram @chantal.hewitt and I will get back to you personally.
