See today's text here! In this episode of The Daily Derech, Rabbi Marcus Rubenstein explores Parashat Lech Lecha, Hilchot Shabbat, and a teaching from Menorat HaMaor about avoiding baseless hatred and cultivating holiness. Abraham refuses the king of Sodom’s offer of war spoils so that his wealth will be attributed to God rather than human generosity. However, he allows his allies to receive their fair share, demonstrating that personal piety should not become a standard imposed on others. Rambam explains that Shabbat rules distinguish between severe illness and minor discomfort. Certain prohibited labors may be performed by a non-Jew to assist someone seriously ill, while minor ailments generally do not justify treatment prohibited by rabbinic decree. Menorat HaMaor teaches that baseless hatred involves hating someone who has committed no transgression warranting hatred. It also connects neglecting the mitzvah of separating challah with material hardship, while fulfilling it brings blessing and prosperity.
