    309. Ally Brettnacher | Finish Lines & Milestones Host on Community, Entrepreneurship & Mental Health

Got feedback about this episode? Send Carolyn a text Ally Brettnacher is an everyday runner, the host of Finish Lines & Milestones, the owner of Athlete Bouquets, and—if you ask me—one heck of a community-builder. Based in Carmel, Indiana, Ally has completed 70 half marathons (many alongside her dad), nine marathons, and more than 175 podcast episodes celebrating the stories of everyday runners. In this conversation, we talk about how her relationship with running has evolved, why she started her podcast, entrepreneurship, motherhood, and our upcoming Indy Monumental weekend together. Ally also gets refreshingly honest about anxiety, ADHD, and how hard it can be to let people see that things aren’t always fine behind the scenes. It’s a fun, honest and very human conversation—and I’m even more excited to finally meet this fellow SandyBoy Productions podcaster in person! I Raced My First Ever Mile (It Didn't Go to Plan)

Alexis has finally raced. Just 26 hours after the first-ever Bloor Street Mile in Toronto, Alexis D'Souza Cyr and Alex Cyr go through her first race, from start to finish: the race-morning nerves, the porta-potty standoff, the imposter syndrome at the start line, and Alex's pacing job (he admits it was bad), which sent her through the first 400m about 20 seconds too fast. She still ran a huge 7:09 mile. Then came track hack. 330. Carbs Before Short Efforts, Why Bicarb May Cause Long-Term Adaptations, The Brain-Body Connection, and Strength Work Before Races!

We had some deep thoughts on cheese before this great episode! The main topic was a new study on sodium bicarbonate, showing performance benefits in a long, intense protocol. We zoom out to talk about potential connections to mitochondria... in rats (sometimes). Our theory: bicarb is driving some of the performance changes we are seeing via long-term adaptation processes within cells. And this one was full of awesome topics! Other topics: Megan’s deep thoughts on the uphill treadmill, the Toe Pro, bicarb pills, the new gear-shifting shoe from Adidas, a study on the brain-strength connection via “mental contraction training,” how hot water immersion and training interact, when to stop strength work before races, what Matt Carpenter would do in the modern era, whether big prize purses will cause more doping in trail running, carb needs before 5k races, fatigue resistance from life, bicarb lotions, and process v. results mindsets in racing. The big PSA from this episode: be careful with your search history. Also, feel free to use our example for a convenient excuse. It will make more sense soon. We love you all!
