They Think They Can Parent Too: Setting Boundaries With In-Laws | Mom Life, Unfiltered

In this episode of Mom Life, Unfiltered, host Ashley Fletcher tackles the emotionally charged and universally relatable challenge of setting boundaries with in-laws. If you have ever felt your authority as a parent undermined by well-meaning but overstepping grandparents, this episode is for you. Ashley dissects the specific panic of watching an in-law override your parenting choices—like feeding routines or discipline methods—and validates the grief and frustration that comes with feeling erased in your own home. This isn't just about complaining; it’s a deep dive into why these interactions hurt so much and how to reclaim your role as the primary caregiver without becoming the villain in your family’s story. The conversation moves beyond simple annoyance to explore the generational differences in parenting styles, such as the 'seen and not heard' mentality versus modern approaches to child autonomy and emotional regulation. Ashley provides actionable scripts for having calm, non-negotiable conversations with in-laws, emphasizing that you don’t need to argue philosophy, only state facts. A critical component of this strategy involves aligning with your partner. The episode highlights the importance of your spouse acting as a shield and ally, using 'I' statements to clarify needs and ensure a united front. Without partner support, boundary-setting becomes exponentially harder, making communication within your marriage essential for external peace. Ultimately, this episode is a empowering guide to motherhood confidence. By setting clear limits, you are not being difficult; you are protecting your child’s development and your own mental health. You are declaring yourself the expert on your child, which requires courage to sit with the discomfort of disappointing others. Whether you are dealing with a mother-in-law who insists on feeding your toddler against your wishes or a father-in-law who dismisses your rules, this episode offers the tools to build your 'boundary muscle.' Listen to find practical advice on maintaining your sanity, strengthening your family unit, and embracing the messy, unapologetic reality of raising children on your own terms. When Your Teen Chooses Art Over Academics: Letting Go of the Map | Mom Lab

In this episode of Mom Lab, host Vanessa Hamilton explores the emotional journey of letting go when your teenager chooses art over academics. This conversation is essential for parents who feel a deep sense of heartbreak or fear when their child’s path diverges from the traditional blueprint of good grades, steady progress, and predictable career success. If you have ever worried that supporting your teen’s creative passions means sacrificing their future security, this episode offers a compassionate framework for shifting from managing outcomes to witnessing the process. It addresses the specific anxiety parents feel when faced with uncertainty, helping you understand that loving your child often requires releasing the need for control. Vanessa shares her personal story of discovering her daughter’s sketchbook at age fourteen and the initial resistance she felt toward the messy, ungraded world of art compared to structured academics. The discussion delves into the psychological shift required to stop viewing children as projects to be optimized and start seeing them as autonomous individuals with their own inner compasses. Key themes include the difference between extrinsic motivation (grades) and intrinsic drive (passion), the importance of resilience in facing subjective criticism, and the value of creative problem-solving in an unpredictable job market. Listeners will gain concrete strategies for replacing interrogative parenting questions like 'What grade did you get?' with curiosity-driven inquiries such as 'What surprised you today?' The episode also tackles the silent grief parents experience when mourning the fantasy version of their child they imagined, emphasizing that authentic connection is only possible when we accept our kids as they are, not as we wish them to be. By validating your teen’s vision and allowing them to lead, you foster integrity, empathy, and adaptability—skills that are increasingly vital in modern life. This is a guide for parents ready to trade compliance for courage and trust that their child’s unique path, even if it looks like a detour, leads to meaningful growth. Tune in for a warm, reflective conversation on how to support your teen’s artistic journey while navigating your own parental fears. Thank you for listening to Mom Lab. The neuroscience of resonance: How to use language to strengthen attachment with your child with Sarah Peyton

Author, speaker, and neuroscience educator Sarah Peyton joins me to explore what happens when attachment theory, Nonviolent Communication, and the science of resonance come together. Together we explore: Why feeling understood is so important for your child's developing brain, nervous system, and sense of self. The fascinating difference between empathy and resonance, and why that distinction matters in our relationships with our kids. How your own attachment history can influence the way you respond when your child is upset, reactive, or pushing your buttons. Why the same behavior from your child might barely bother you one day, and feel completely intolerable the next. How Nonviolent Communication can help you look beneath your child's behavior and get curious about the feelings and needs driving it. The surprising connection between secure attachment and independence, and why pushing children to become more independent can sometimes have the opposite effect. How becoming more resonant with your child can begin to shift your own attachment patterns too. Why changing the way you relate to your child doesn't happen overnight, but can profoundly change your relationship over time. Whether you're trying to break patterns from your own childhood, understand why certain parenting moments feel so triggering, or simply want to feel more connected to your child, this conversation offers a fascinating new way to think about what it really means to feel seen, understood, and securely connected. 143: How to Avoid Dying Early for Moms with Dr. Stephanie Gray

Were you scared away from taking hormone replacement therapy? I was. 100%! But this conversation with Dr. Stephanie Gray may have changed my mind. I’m 46, firmly in the “what is happening to my body and what is ABOUT to happen?” stage of life, and I had definitely absorbed the message that hormone replacement therapy was a Big Scary Decision. I couldn’t have explained the research. I couldn’t have named the famous study that scared so many women away from hormones. I just had this sense of, “Ooh, probably not for me. I’ll just eat my way to good health and keep my mobility, thankyouverymuch.” You know what I mean? That’s exactly why this conversation fascinated me. Dr. Stephanie Gray has been working with hormones for well over a decade, and she walked me through what actually happened with the research that shaped our cultural fear of hormone therapy, what she believes we got wrong, and some REALLY important distinctions that tend to get flattened into one little word: hormones. This one gets dense in the best possible way. We’re talking perimenopause, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, delivery methods, heart health, brain health, metabolic health, and why the details matter enormously. Listen in to hear: Why the 2002 Women’s Health Initiative study scared a generation of women away from hormone therapy, and the three major problems Dr. Gray sees with how that research was conducted The surprisingly simple way to tell whether the hormone you’ve been prescribed is actually the same hormone your body makes Why Dr. Gray says “progesterone” and “progestin” are NOT interchangeable words, even though they’re often treated that way What oral estrogen has to do with the liver and clotting risk, and why the delivery method of a hormone matters Patches, creams, pellets, lozenges, injections…oh my! How the options differ and why this definitely isn’t a one-size-fits-all conversation Why timing matters when women consider hormone therapy, especially around perimenopause and menopause Dr. Gray’s “healthy house” analogy for understanding estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and thyroid hormones without needing a medical degree The connection she draws between declining hormones and four major health concerns as we age: cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurodegenerative disease, and metabolic dysfunction If your entire understanding of hormone replacement therapy is basically, “Wasn’t there a study saying that was dangerous?” you are absolutely not alone. I was right there with you. This conversation gave me a LOT more questions to ask, which is exactly where I want to be when I’m making decisions about my health.
