How to talk back to the voice that hates you

The reality behind my book launch
A few weeks ago, I posted photos of myself signing books at Barnes & Noble on Fifth Avenue and at my local bookstore. It looked like a win. What I didn't share was how some stores I visited hadn't stocked the book at all, or had a single copy on order from a friend of mine who had put in the order. There is a story I heard years ago from my friend Philippe about Grigory Potemkin, who supposedly built fake, beautiful villages along a riverbank just so Catherine the Great would believe everything was thriving. How influence works
In the early 1980s, Steve Jobs asked an engineer to save 10 seconds off the Macintosh boot-up time. The engineer found 28. His skills never changed. The story he was working inside of did. How to manage your mental health

How storytelling secretly rewires your beliefs
During the Second World War, up to forty percent of the German army tuned in nightly to a radio host they trusted completely. He never existed. He was invented by a British propagandist, and his death on air was staged theater. That story is the doorway into something I think about constantly: we don't experience reality and then tell a story about it. We feel something first, and our mind writes the story afterward to explain it. The voice that does the writing rarely announces itself as fiction. It sounds like your own voice, stating facts. How logic betrays the people who trust it
Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes and one of the sharpest minds of his era, spent years publicly defending photographs of fairies made from paper cutouts. He wasn't fooled because he was naive, but because he was brilliant, and he desperately wanted it to be true. We are not rational animals. We are rationalizing ones. The smarter we are, the better we are at building a convincing case for whatever we already wanted to believe. Logic, when we trust it blindly, doesn't lead us to the truth. It defends the conclusion we'd already fallen in love with. In this episode of Inner Propaganda, I explore how logic actually works, where it comes from, and where it quietly breaks down. When people give, they're not just transferring money. They're rehearsing a version of themselves. That insight, shared by my guest Cherian Koshy, cuts to the heart of why logical fundraising pitches so often fail, and why identity-driven communication changes everything. Cherian is the author of Neurogiving, a behavioral scientist, and one of the most original thinkers I've encountered on the question of generosity. Why most culture change fails (And what works)
When Louis Gerstner took over a dying IBM in 1993, he told his leadership team the company's last problem was a missing vision. Every expert in the room thought he was wrong. He was not. You don't find meaning from life. You build it
In 1938, a London stockbroker named Nicholas Winton canceled a ski vacation and went to Czechoslovakia instead. Over the following months, he organized the rescue of 669 mostly Jewish children, got them onto trains to Britain, and then went home and told almost nobody for nearly 50 years. What moves a person to do something like that? The answer, I believe, is meaning, and not the kind you find, but the kind you build. In this episode of Inner Propaganda, I make a distinction that I think is one of the most important ideas I have explored on this podcast. Meaning is not something that exists out in the world waiting to be discovered. It is a story we sell to ourselves about what our experiences represent. That shift from finding meaning to creating it gives us back a form of agency that most people do not realize they have. I explore the psychology of meaning and sacred values, drawing on the work of Viktor Frankl, Emily Falk, Brené Brown, and Dan Ariely. I examine why real meaning is quiet, why it costs something, and why it does not need an audience. I also share two practical frameworks for using meaning more deliberately, whether you are trying to get through a difficult period, change a long-standing habit, or influence the people around you more effectively. Why feelings feel like facts
I was lying on a wooden floor in the Amazon jungle, convinced I was finally seeing the truth. The colors were sharper. The connections were obvious. Everything made sense. There was just one problem: I am a psychologist who studies how people get tricked into believing things, and right at that moment, I was being tricked. What the ayahuasca did to my perception that night is a more extreme version of what is happening to every one of us every single day. Neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett calls it affective realism.
