Episode 99 :  After School Meltdowns: Why They Happen and What to Do About It

There is so much information out there about what our children should and shouldn't be eating, and honestly, it can feel like a lot. I don't want you trying to do everything, because when we try to do everything, we end up doing nothing. So in this episode, I'm keeping it simple and sharing the three key areas that I personally focus on for my kids' health: gut health, quality protein and sugar. First up, we'll talk about why gut health really is at the centre of overall health, and some really simple ways you can increase fibre and plant foods without your child needing to sit down to a huge bowl of vegetables. Then we'll look at protein, particularly the importance of looking beyond dairy and making sure we're getting enough iron and fibre into our children's day. And finally, we'll talk about sugar. I'm not about banning sugar or making it the forbidden fruit. It's about understanding where sugar is creeping into our children's diets and making some simple changes, particularly with drinks and snacks. IN THIS EPISODE Supporting Your Child's Gut Health Why fibre, plant foods and a diverse gut microbiome are so important for children's health, plus simple ways to increase fibre every day. Choosing Quality Protein Why it's not just about getting enough protein, but looking at where that protein comes from and whether your child is also getting enough iron and fibre. Making Snacks Count How everyday snacks can be an opportunity to add more iron, fibre and other important nutrients, particularly for picky eaters and fussy eaters. Reducing Sugar Without Banning It Why I don't believe in completely avoiding sugar, and how to manage sugary drinks, cereals, yoghurts and snacks without creating unnecessary food rules. Just Pick One Thing The biggest takeaway from this episode: don't try to perfect everything. Choose one small change, start there, and build from it. As a paediatric dietitian and children's nutritionist, I want you to feel confident making simple changes that actually fit into your family's life. It isn't about having the perfect diet. It's about those little improvements we make to our child's day and week that, over time, can make a really big difference. We can't wait to experience miracles with you! Welcome to a new episode of the Future Generations podcast! In this powerful episode, we're joined by Dr. Jess Peatross, a former board-certified internal medicine hospitalist who walked away from pharma-driven medicine. Speaking live on stage, Dr. Jess shares her journey from a preacher's daughter in West Virginia to a hospitalist bound by cookbook medicine, the research and Gerson Therapy training she says opened her eyes, and the chart note that ended her hospital career. She walks through her work writing vaccine exemptions in San Diego and the medical board's push to open children's records, then lays out her five ways to turn sick care into true healthcare: treating the body as a whole, moving beyond labels, looking for health, rethinking pathogens, and restoring genuine informed consent. This is a call for unity, and a reminder that nobody knows your body better than you. Highlights: "I used to go to work with a Jimmy Dean's breakfast sandwich and a Diet Mountain Dew and tell people how to get healthy." "When you have a constellation of symptoms, your body is screaming that something is wrong. Your body never lies." "We have to wake them up to change the healthcare system, and we can't do that through division. We have to do that through unity and kindness and love." "Informed consent means the good, the bad, and the ugly of any medical procedure, of any drug, of anything in conventional medicine." "Ain't nobody knows the body better than you in your body. I am a mere vessel and guide to help you come back to yourself, and that's what every doctor should be." • How Not to Screw Up Your Kids

Bucket Emptying: Raising Children Who Love to Read

In this episode, I’m talking honestly about something so many parents worry about - a child who “won’t read”, says reading is boring, or hasn’t picked up a book in years. I explain why this isn’t a motivation problem at all, but a skills gap in reading identity, attention, language, and confidence. And once you understand what’s really going on underneath the surface, helping your child become a reader becomes far more straightforward. I walk you through the wide‑lens view of reading: why some children haven’t yet found the right book, why reading has accidentally become a chore, and why the digital world makes sustained attention harder for every child. I also share five practical things you can start today to help your child rediscover a love of reading that lasts for life. So take a seat, pour yourself a cuppa, and enjoy the conversation… Highlights from this episode: 01:00 - The biggest predictor of academic success 04:03 - Why reading skills matter 08:06 - 5 things that actually help 12:06 - Let your kids read whatever they want 16:38 - Model reading to your children 19:22 - Stop doing these things right now 💚 Please share with at least one friend, and let’s build our village together 💚 For all previous episodes, and to submit episode topics you want me to talk about, visit https://drmaryhan.com/podcast/ 💚 For the free resource library, visit https://drmaryhan.com/library 💚 Join our campaign One Million Moments to reduce the number of children struggling with mental health challenges from 17% to 10% by 2025 💚 Brands and advertisers, email contact@drmaryhan.com DISCLAIMER: The content in the podcast is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
