    The Philosophy of Existential Despair

The Russian existentialist philosopher Lev Shestov is known for his “philosophy of despair” or “philosophy of tragedy”. For Shestov, the sources of philosophy were the human tragedy, the horrors and sufferings of human life and the sense of hopelessness. Tragedies take place in the depth of the human soul, where no eye can reach out to see. Consequently, He saw the beginning of philosophy starting not with knowledge, not with wonder, but with despair. Despair is what he considers a “penultimate knowledge”, that is, a preliminary step that we must acknowledge, in order to progress towards something higher, the “ultimate knowledge”. 👑 Become a Patron Access exclusive material and deeper studies https://www.patreon.com/eternalised ⭐ Or become a YouTube Member https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqos1tl0RntucGGtPXNxkkA/join — Support the work ☕ Buy a coffee: https://ko-fi.com/eternalised 💸 PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/eternalisedofficial 👕 Official Merch: https://eternalised.creator-spring.com — For deeper study 📜 Full transcript: https://eternalisedofficial.com/2022/01/03/existential-despair/ 📚 Personal library: https://eternalisedofficial.com/library 💡 eBooks: https://ko-fi.com/eternalised/shop 🎨 Artwork archive: https://eternalisedofficial.com/patron-benefits Stay connected 📨 Newsletter: https://eternalisedofficial.com/subscribe ✍️ Substack: https://substack.com/@eternalised — Elsewhere 🐦 X: https://x.com/eternalised1 📷 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eternalised_official 🎧 Podcast: https://anchor.fm/eternalised 📘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/eternalised ━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📚 Recommended Reading All Things are Possible – Lev Shestov ▶ https://amzn.to/3HteKAE Athens and Jerusalem – Lev Shestov ▶ https://amzn.to/3G6sVLx 🎧 Prefer Audiobooks? Political Thought in the Harlem Renaissance: Crash Course Black American History #27

When we think about the Harlem Renaissance, the arts come immediately to mind. But new political theories were also blossoming during this time. We've talked about Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois, but today we'll get into some other thinkers with different ideas about civil rights, fair labor practices, and Black nationalism.
