Episode 157 – Is the Medication working? The 50% Approach This Episode was inspired by the 4-hour Psychopharmacology Workshop I hosted during the WSAVA Congress in Poland last week. We had such a great 4 hours chatting about the theory and, more importantly, practice of using Veterinary Psychopharmacology. One of the questions we dived further into was "How do we know if a baseline medication is working for the patient and how do we know if we should swap to something else, increase the dose or perhaps augment with another medication?". 156 The Perils of Nail Trims
Episode 156 – The Perils of Nail Trims This is SUCH an important topic so I was delighted to hear a presentation on nail trims at our recent European College Conference in Slovenia. Far too often, we "squeeze" a nail trim in between consultations or at the end of a consultation, requiring team members to be pulled away from what they are doing to perform an often very scary and aversive procedure in a short space of time and under pressure. Not only do nail trims cause fear, anxiety and stress in our cats and dogs, but they can also be a source of pain and discomfort, especially if done incorrectly. There are, of course, situations where nail trims are necessary for health, mobility and comfort, these should however been done with the time, patience and care they deserve. Episode 155 – The use of alpha 2 agonist as PVPs before General Anaesthesia A question I have received quite frequently recently is whether alpha 2 agonist PVPs such as tasipimidine, detomidine, dexmedetomidine OTM gel or clonidine can safely be given to dogs before intramuscular alpha 2 agonist injection for sedation or general anaesthesia. In this episode, I chat to Canine Dog Trainer and Behaviourist, Sharon Jones, about the brilliant topic of Puppy Socialisation, especially as it relates to advice given around vaccine administration, when the puppy can first "go out" and what this means for socialisation. I love this topic so much as I feel we have really changed our approach to Puppy Socialisation in recent years, making sure we don't overwhelm or even frighten puppies with over-exposure and long checklists of things they "should encounter" in a very short period of time. Episode 145 – PVPs for Cats Cats can be extremely fearful at the Veterinary Clinic and being able to administer medications such as gabapentin before vet visits has been absolutely game-changing for feline practice in the last 10 years or so. 142 Using Trazodone with SSRIs and TCAs
Episode 142 – Using Trazodone with SSRIs and TCAs Can trazodone be safely used in combination with and SSRI or TCA without causing signs of Serotonin Syndrome? This is one of the most frequently asked questions I hear, especially from GP vets. Have a listen as I chat through my thoughts on this topic and refer back to one of the original studies on trazodone from 2008 where it was used as an augmenting agent for patients already on an SSRI or TCA to further improve signs of fear or anxiety. I also talk about medication doses, and I mention 2 further papers where dogs and cats ingested their caregivers' anti-depressant medication and only 25% developed clinical signs consistent with SS. Episode 141 – Why "Gaba/Traz" is not always the best option This episode was inspired by a lecture I gave at BVA Live 2026 and the ensuing questions and discussion about the use of Pre-Visit Pharmaceuticals. The truth is that while gabapentin and trazodone can be a good PVP combination for some canine patients, it should not be used as a "one size fits all" approach for all dogs requiring anxiolytic support at the veterinary clinic and we should, instead, consider each patient as an individual and tailor their medication regime accordingly. In this episode I chat about: · Cats versus dogs when it comes to PVPs. · Why anxiolytic doses of gabapentin can cause vulnerability in canine patients with musculoskeletal disease. · Why trial doses at home are imperative. · Other options for PVP combinations.
