EP 10: Who Gets to Love Freely?
Episode 10. A milestone, a birthday, and Beetlejuice in the building. Coop is back in the third chair, in full Beetlejuice, and it's Halloween, which also means it's Lala's birthday. Cake, three candles, then straight into the heavy one. A clip of Dr. Umar and Nick Cannon has been flooding our DMs. The point: white women can go from relationship to relationship in the spotlight and stay "marriage material." A Black woman can have two kids with her college sweetheart, date one person after the divorce, and suddenly she's damaged. We ask who actually gets to love freely, and who gets judged for starting over, for having kids, for dating outside their race, for choosing more than one partner, or for saying marriage was never the goal. Coop goes first on what marriage material even means, why he doesn't believe in a government license for love, and what a life partner looks like when the sex is the easy part. Lala talks about the years she cared about being "wife material" and the day she stopped. We get into the married men in the DMs, the women who don't want kids, postpartum, the village, and how differently a father of six and a mother of six get looked at. It gets personal. Lala's birth story and the white nurse who fought a Black doctor for her. Coop at 18 with a 31-year-old named China, and what his mother said at the door. A 70-year-old client who found out, after 25 years, that her husband had a boyfriend for 18 of them. And the woman who told the side chick "don't tell me nothing, my truck is almost paid off." Word of the Day is autonomy: the freedom to make decisions about your own life, body, relationships, and future without outside control. Then Coop and Koko tell the story of how Beetlejuice won them a Florida trip at a costume contest. Our Open Letter is the whole episode in one message: a 36-year-old divorced mom of two, dating two men who both know about each other, happy, and getting dragged by her mother, her sister, and a brother with three kids by three women, while her cheating ex gets congratulated on his engagement.
