The Ugly Grief
Episode Five: The Ugly Grief ⚠️ TRIGGER WARNING: This episode discusses grief, addiction and recovery, sexual assault, childhood abuse, suicide and suicidal ideation, psychiatric medication experiences, and psychedelic/plant-medicine treatments. What happens when you start healing… and then life hands you a grief you never could’ve prepared for? This week on The Ugly Sister Podcast, I’m sitting down with my dear friend Holley Stevenson for one of those conversations that feels less like an interview and more like you accidentally got added to our FaceTime call. Holley became a mother at just 16 years old, with her own mother beside her every step of the way. Years later, while already deep into her healing journey, Holley lost the woman who wasn’t just her mom—but her best friend and one of the people who helped her raise her daughter. We talk about grief that comes in waves, motherhood without the village our parents seemed to have, breaking generational patterns, learning to regulate instead of react, addiction recovery, mental health, medication, and Holley’s experiences with ibogaine and other psychedelic-assisted treatments. We also get into the messy shit: raising kids while you’re still healing yourself, apologizing when you get it wrong, protecting children when adults and systems fail them, and learning that sometimes healing isn’t about never falling apart again. Sometimes it’s about knowing what to do when you do. This episode is vulnerable, heavy, funny, occasionally unhinged, and very us. Because around here, we talk about the shit everyone else told us to keep quiet about. 🎙️🩷 The Ugly Sister Podcast with Kendra Jaymes Nothing discussed in this episode regarding medications, ibogaine, psychedelics, addiction treatment, or mental health treatment is medical advice.
