Sean Whalen Opens Up: Divorce, Shame & The Darkest 2 Years Of My Life | Ep. 350

Sean Whalen built Lions Not Sheep, wrote How to Make Sh*t Happen, made millions, and built a massive audience around taking ownership of your life. But over the last two years, Sean found himself in a season he couldn't simply outwork, overpower, or fix. In this episode of The Super Human Life, Coach Frank Rich sits down with Sean for a raw conversation about divorce, identity, masculinity, faith, fatherhood, fitness, success, and what happens when the version of you that built your life is no longer capable of taking you where you need to go next. Sean opens up about navigating a highly public divorce, losing clients and millions of dollars, questioning himself as a leader, and nearly walking away from everything he had built. He explains why he chose not to fight back publicly—and how learning to sit in the discomfort forced him to develop something the lifelong "warrior" had never truly mastered: stillness. Frank and Sean explore why men often try to sedate themselves through their hardest seasons with porn, alcohol, work, scrolling, sex, achievement, and other forms of escape—and why those dark seasons may actually contain the lessons necessary for a man's next level. They also unpack Sean's physical transformation at 47, why fitness can radically change a man's identity, building a business around the life and family you actually want, raising sons through example rather than words, and why successful men still desperately need real brotherhood. Ultimately, this conversation isn't about becoming less driven. It's about becoming a more complete man. A man capable of fighting when it's time to fight—but also capable of entering the garden, getting quiet, telling the truth, asking for help, and allowing the old version of himself to die so something stronger can be built in its place. In this episode, Frank and Sean discuss: Why Sean's public divorce forced him to completely reevaluate himself The identity crisis that can happen when successful men suddenly lose control Why Sean almost walked away from Lions Not Sheep What the "warrior in the garden" taught him about masculinity Why your darkest seasons can become your greatest periods of growth The difference between surrender and weakness Wrestling with God when life doesn't go according to your plan Why men use porn, alcohol, work, achievement, and other behaviors to sedate themselves How fitness helped Sean rebuild himself during one of his hardest seasons Getting into the best shape of his life at 47 Why the identity that made you successful can eventually become your limitation Building your business around your life instead of sacrificing your life for your business Fatherhood, presence, and what your children learn by watching you Why successful men need brotherhood more than ever The growing loneliness and isolation facing modern men Why vulnerability can be one of a man's greatest strengths Why telling the truth may be the first step toward rebuilding your life Sean's message for the man currently struggling is simple: Stop pretending you're fine. Tell the truth. Admit when you don't know. Ask for help. Because as Sean puts it, "Truth is the ticket to liberation." About Sean Whalen Sean Whalen is an entrepreneur, author, speaker, and founder of Lions Not Sheep and the Lions Den. He is the author of How to Make Sh*t Happen and has spent more than a decade coaching tens of thousands of people around business, relationships, fitness, personal responsibility, and creating a life on their own terms. Former Addict: I Was Homeless, Addicted & Suicidal (Here's What Finally Changed Me) | Ep. 349

What if your addiction isn't the real problem, but an attempt to solve something deeper? In this episode of The Super Human Life, Frank Rich sits down with Nathan Crane for a powerful conversation about addiction, emotional healing, identity, masculinity, achievement, nervous-system regulation, spirituality, and what it actually takes to become free. After battling drugs, alcohol, homelessness, depression, and destructive behaviors as a teenager, Nathan spent more than 20 years exploring healing, meditation, spirituality, and human transformation. Nathan believes addiction can be understood as an adaptive response attempting to meet a deeper emotional need. Instead of only asking, "How do I stop?" he challenges us to ask: "What is this behavior trying to do for me?" Frank and Nathan explore why shame and willpower often fail to create lasting change, how suppressed emotions can fuel addictive behaviors, and why even highly successful men may unknowingly build their lives around beliefs like "I'm not enough" or "I have to prove myself." They also unpack the power of community and "borrowed beliefs," nervous-system regulation, breathwork and meditation, and why healing your wounds doesn't mean losing the ambition that helped make you successful. In this episode, you'll discover: Why Nathan views addiction as a symptom rather than the root problem What an "adaptive addiction" is—and what yours may be trying to do for you How shame and emotional suppression can reinforce destructive cycles Why you don't need massive childhood trauma to develop limiting beliefs How insecurity and inadequacy can become fuel for achievement Why healing yourself doesn't mean losing your ambition Nathan's journey from addiction, homelessness, and despair to rebuilding his life How community allows us to "borrow" healthier beliefs about who we can become The connection between addiction and nervous-system regulation Why Nathan uses breathwork and meditation as part of his daily practice Why constantly chasing pleasure, success, or stimulation never feels like enough What it means to stop managing symptoms and begin addressing what's underneath them If you've ever wondered why you keep returning to something you know isn't serving you—or why success, achievement, pleasure, and validation never seem to feel like enough—this conversation will challenge you to stop fighting only the behavior and start looking underneath it. About Nathan Crane Nathan Crane is an author, speaker, meditation and breathwork teacher, and transformational educator whose work focuses on emotional healing, spirituality, human potential, and personal transformation. After experiencing severe addiction, homelessness, depression, and destructive behavior during his teenage years, Nathan began rebuilding his life through emotional healing, meditation, spiritual practice, health, and service. His own transformation eventually led him to spend more than two decades studying and teaching approaches to healing and personal growth. Today, Nathan works with individuals through The Awaken Process, helping people explore the deeper emotional patterns and beliefs influencing their lives so they can experience greater freedom, peace, and connection. Dopamine Expert: The Shocking Truth About Success, Addiction & Why You Always Want More w/ Dr. Daniel Z. Lieberman | Ep. 348

What if dopamine isn't actually the "pleasure chemical" we've been told it is? And what if the same system driving you to build more, achieve more, earn more, and become more is also making it harder to enjoy the life you already have? In this episode of The Super Human Life, Frank Rich sits down with psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Z. Lieberman, co-author of the international bestseller The Molecule of More, for a fascinating conversation about dopamine, addiction, achievement, love, identity, and the endless human pursuit of "more." Dr. Lieberman explains why dopamine is less about pleasure itself and more about anticipation, pursuit, novelty, and the future—and why this distinction changes the way we understand everything from success and ambition to pornography, relationships, social media, and addiction. Frank and Dr. Lieberman explore why highly successful people can reach the top and still feel empty, how modern technology exploits ancient reward systems, and why "cheap dopamine" from pornography, junk food, gambling, scrolling, and digital stimulation can gradually replace the harder—but more meaningful—rewards found in real life. They also challenge the popular idea of the "dopamine reset." Dr. Lieberman explains why simply removing stimulation may not create lasting transformation and why overcoming addiction ultimately requires something deeper: rewiring the brain and changing your identity. This leads to one of the most powerful moments of the conversation as Dr. Lieberman validates the identity-based approach Frank has developed through his work with nearly 1,900 men: lasting freedom isn't simply about restricting access to an addictive behavior. It's about becoming someone who no longer needs that behavior. The conversation then goes deeper into community, belonging, spirituality, serotonin 2A, the unconscious mind, and why meaningful identity transformation can sometimes seem to happen suddenly after years of struggle. Frank and Dr. Lieberman also explore the role dopamine plays in love and marriage, why the intense "honeymoon phase" eventually fades, and how passionate love can transform into a deeper companionate love built around trust, presence, friendship, and shared life. They discuss why highly driven men can struggle to enjoy this quieter form of fulfillment—and why the very ambition that helps a man build an extraordinary career can make it difficult for him to be fully present with his wife, children, and the life he worked so hard to create. Dr. Lieberman also shares his perspective on children, exploration, ADHD, real-world risk, and the consequences of moving more of childhood into digital environments. He explains why young people need healthy outlets for exploration and why doing difficult things in the real world matters. Finally, Dr. Lieberman shares the practices he personally uses to balance his future-oriented drive—including meditation, breathwork, and device-free walks in nature—and explains why anyone trying to eliminate cheap dopamine should first decide what they're going to replace it with. Because dopamine itself isn't the enemy. It drives ambition, creativity, exploration, love, achievement, and progress. The question is whether you're directing that drive toward a meaningful life—or allowing an increasingly stimulating world to direct it for you. In this episode, you'll discover: What most people misunderstand about dopamine and pleasure Why dopamine is really about anticipation, pursuit, novelty, and "more" Why high achievers can reach the top and still feel empty The hidden relationship between success, dopamine, and addiction Why pornography and other forms of "easy dopamine" can become so compelling How the modern world exploits reward systems built for scarcity "Easy dopamine" vs. the harder rewards of real-world accomplishment Why a dopamine reset or dopamine fast isn't the same as changing your life Why lasting addiction recovery requires identity transformation The role community and belonging can play in recovery Spirituality, serotonin 2A, and identity change Why change can sometimes happen suddenly after years of struggling How dopamine influences attraction and falling in love Why the honeymoon phase doesn't last forever Passionate love vs. companionate love Why ambitious men can struggle with presence and long-term fulfillment What parents should understand about dopamine and childhood exploration Dr. Lieberman's perspective on ADHD and modern expectations of boys Why meditation, breathwork, and phone-free nature walks matter Why removing cheap dopamine without replacing it often fails How working with your hands reconnects you with the real world How to pursue a better future without missing the life you have today About Dr. Daniel Z. Lieberman Dr. Daniel Z. Lieberman is a psychiatrist and co-author of The Molecule of More, which explores how dopamine influences desire, love, sex, creativity, addiction, ambition, and the human drive to pursue what comes next. He is also the author of Spellbound, an exploration of the unconscious mind and the hidden forces influencing human behavior, and is currently working on The Molecules of Catastrophe, examining how the brain can respond to profound loss and, under the right circumstances, transform catastrophe into growth and a life richer in meaning. Father of 7: Working Hard "For Your Family" Could Be Destroying It w/ Greg Denning | Ep. 347

What does it really mean to succeed as a man if your business is thriving but your marriage is drifting, your kids barely know you, and the life you're building is costing you the people you're supposedly building it for? In this episode of The Super Human Life, Frank sits down with Greg Denning, author of The Formidable Family Man and founder of the Formidable Fathers community, for a powerful conversation about fatherhood, marriage, masculinity, family culture, and becoming the man your family actually needs. Greg and his wife have been married for 25 years, raised seven children, homeschooled and worldschooled their family, and traveled together through more than 60 countries. But Greg's philosophy of family leadership wasn't inherited from an ideal childhood. He left home at 16 and experienced loneliness, instability, hardship, and the absence of strong male examples—experiences that ultimately forced him to decide what kind of husband, father, and man he wanted to become. Frank and Greg unpack why fathers can accidentally create distance while trying to raise strong children, why trust requires both character and competence, and why your kids are paying far more attention to how you live than what you tell them. Greg challenges men to become the kind of man they want their sons to become and the kind of man they want their daughters to marry. They also confront one of the biggest traps facing high-performing men: telling yourself you're working endless hours "for your family" while slowly sacrificing the relationships you're supposedly working for. Greg explains why men should rethink the traditional work-life timeline, create more leverage, and become intentional about designing a life where success doesn't require losing your marriage, health, faith, or children. The conversation goes deeper into marriage, physical capability, homeschooling, worldschooling, lifelong learning, male loneliness, brotherhood, pornography, faith, and the responsibility men have to become a force for good in the world. Expect to Learn Why connection before correction may be one of the most important principles in fatherhood. The two qualities Greg believes children need before they truly trust their father: character and competence. Why your children notice the gap between what you preach and how you actually live. How broken promises—even small ones—can slowly weaken trust with your kids. Why being a great provider does not automatically make you a great father. How successful men can unintentionally take from their families while convincing themselves they're doing it all for them. Greg's "naked test" for confronting the truth about who you are mentally, emotionally, spiritually, physically, socially, and financially. Why men may be more afraid of looking like failures than actually failing. Why physical strength and health are part of a father's responsibility to remain capable and "always ready." How Greg structures his life around self-development, marriage, children, faith, work, and family culture. Why couples so easily become roommates after having children and how to prevent it. Why your kids are learning what marriage looks like by watching yours. Why Greg and his wife chose homeschooling and worldschooling before either became mainstream. How travel, books, culture, hardship, and real-world experiences can become part of a child's education. The books that most shaped Greg after decades of reading roughly one book per week. How being alone on Christmas Eve at 16 shaped Greg's commitment to creating a radically different family. Why modern men can be surrounded by people and still feel profoundly alone. Why men need brotherhood, accountability, and conversations that go deeper than work, sports, and surface-level friendships. Greg's perspective on pornography, sexual exploitation, and the responsibility men have to confront evil rather than ignore it. Why Greg believes a Super Human Life starts with clean hands, a pure heart, and working harder on yourself than anything else. About Greg Denning Greg Denning is a husband, father of seven, grandfather, author, coach, educator, and founder of the Formidable Fathers community. After leaving home at 16 and navigating significant hardship on his own, Greg became deeply committed to personal development, reading, education, and intentionally building the family life he never experienced growing up. He eventually became a public-school teacher before choosing a more unconventional path with his own family. Greg and his wife, Rachel, have been married for 25 years and have raised and homeschooled their seven children while traveling together through more than 60 countries. Today, they coach husbands, wives, parents, couples, and families on creating extraordinary marriages, raising capable children, and intentionally designing a family life around their deepest values. Christian Men's Leader: Most Men Are Having An Identity Crisis & Don't Even Realize It | Ep. 346

What if the biggest problem facing men today isn't a lack of discipline, ambition, or opportunity? What if it's that most men don't actually know who they are? In this episode of The Super Human Life, Frank Rich sits down with Tim Couet, author of Identity Assignment, to unpack why so many men are winning externally while still feeling lost internally. Tim believes two issues sit underneath much of the chaos men experience today: Identity and priorities. Rather than building your identity around career, money, status, performance, or achievement, Tim argues that a man's identity has already been assigned by God. Using Genesis 2:15 as the foundation, Tim explains why the biblical assignment of man can be summarized in two words: Serve. Protect. From there, Frank and Tim explore what happens when a man begins living from that identity—and what happens when his priorities fall out of alignment. They discuss marriage, fatherhood, work, lust, pornography, achievement, the modern church, the loss of initiation into manhood, and why the thing many men are ultimately chasing may not actually be more success. It may be peace. In This Episode, You'll Learn Why identity and priorities are two of the biggest issues facing men today Why men often confuse what they do with who they are What Genesis 2:15 reveals about the assignment of men Why Tim believes men are called to serve and protect How work quietly becomes the highest priority for many men Why trust in marriage is rebuilt through evidence and consistency How identity can change a man's relationship with lust and women Why you cannot simply achieve your way out of internal struggles The difference between being a biological male and becoming a mature man Where the modern church may be falling short in developing men Why young men need intentional initiation into adulthood Why many men are chasing achievement when what they really want is peace How this framework applies to married men, single men, fathers, and men rebuilding their lives Why Jesus is the ultimate example of both a servant and protector About Tim Couet Tim Couet is the author of Identity Assignment and founder of Prodigal Man, a ministry focused on helping men understand their identity in Christ and become the leaders God has called them to be. He also hosts Altar'd Manhood and Mentoring Christian Men Worldwide. Tim and his wife, Mettina, have been married for more than 17 years and have four children. He currently serves as the Chief Deputy Tax Collector of Pasco County, Florida and is actively involved in men's ministry at Grace Family Church. Hypnotherapist: Your Subconscious Is Controlling Your Life (And You Don't Even Know It) w/ Nelson Whiting | Ep. 345

What if the reason you can't change your behavior has less to do with willpower—and more to do with subconscious beliefs you don't even know are there? In this episode, Coach Frank Rich welcomes Nelson Whiting of No Limits Hypnotherapy back to the show for a much deeper conversation about the subconscious mind, hypnotherapy, identity, neuroplasticity, and what actually has to happen for lasting behavior change. Nelson argues that while the conscious mind can decide what we want, much of our day-to-day behavior is carried out automatically through subconscious processes. This creates an important question for any man who has repeatedly tried to quit pornography: If you consciously know porn is hurting you, genuinely want to stop, and understand exactly what you need to do… why do you keep going back? Frank and Nelson unpack how beliefs can form early in life and later influence imagination, memory, emotion, and behavior without us consciously recognizing what's happening. They explore why information alone rarely creates transformation, why shame can reinforce destructive identities, and how an experience from childhood can continue influencing the decisions of a grown man decades later. Nelson then takes Frank inside his approach to hypnotherapy—from the initial consultation through trance, identifying underlying beliefs, reframing the meaning attached to past experiences, and testing whether a new response holds under pressure. Frank also pushes Nelson on some of the biggest questions surrounding his work: Is hypnosis mind control? Can subconscious beliefs be changed without hypnotherapy? How do you know when the process has actually worked? What's the difference between changing a memory and changing what that memory means? And can a man eventually reach a point where porn is available—but he genuinely no longer wants it? The conversation also explores the intersection between subconscious programming and Christianity, including shame versus truth, spiritual interpretations of destructive beliefs, personal agency, and what it means to become the person capable of living the life you say you want. Ultimately, Frank and Nelson arrive at a remarkably similar destination through different frameworks: Lasting freedom isn't simply getting better at resisting pornography. It's becoming a man who no longer needs, wants, or desires it. Expect to learn: What Nelson means when he says virtually all behavior passes through subconscious processes The difference between the conscious and subconscious mind Why consciously wanting to change doesn't guarantee your behavior will change How Nelson connects beliefs → imagination → memory → emotion → behavior How childhood experiences can create beliefs that continue influencing adult behavior Why two people can experience the same stimulus and have completely different emotional responses How pornography can become associated with stress relief, escape, shame, loneliness, arousal, or other internal states Why constantly fighting the behavior may fail to address what's happening underneath it How shame can turn "I did something wrong" into "something is wrong with me" Why Nelson believes changing the meaning attached to a past experience can alter present behavior What actually happens during a hypnotherapy session What Nelson means by trance and subconscious access Why hypnosis does not, in Nelson's framework, mean surrendering control of your mind The relationship between discipline, surrender, and flow How Nelson attempts to identify the original belief underneath an unwanted behavior Why he focuses on asking questions rather than telling clients what they should believe How he tests whether a newly established response holds under pressure Whether subconscious change can happen through coaching, therapy, recovery programs, prayer, breathwork, or other methods without hypnosis Where Frank's identity-transformation model overlaps with Nelson's subconscious-reprogramming model How Christian faith fits into Nelson's understanding of beliefs, truth, shame, and transformation Why the ultimate goal isn't simply resisting porn—but becoming the man who genuinely doesn't want it anymore About Nelson Whting: Nelson Whiting is a hypnotherapist and the founder of No Limits Hypnotherapy, where he works with clients to uncover and change subconscious beliefs and emotional patterns connected to unwanted behaviors. His approach to pornography recovery focuses on looking beyond the behavior itself and investigating the underlying beliefs, memories, emotions, and internal associations that may be contributing to the cycle. Nelson integrates his Christian worldview into his work and frequently explores the relationship between subconscious beliefs, personal agency, identity, truth, spiritual development, and lasting transformation. He is also the author of Your Problem Isn't Pornography, which explores his framework for understanding and overcoming compulsive pornography use. Nelson works with clients remotely through virtual hypnotherapy sessions in addition to his work in Utah. In this conversation: Frank and Nelson explore: The Subconscious Mind — What it is, how Nelson believes it influences behavior, and why automatic programming can override conscious intentions. Belief Systems — How beliefs develop, particularly during childhood, and how those beliefs can become filters through which later experiences are interpreted. Pornography & Behavior — Why porn may be the visible behavior while deeper beliefs, emotional associations, and coping patterns are operating underneath it. Childhood Programming — How experiences early in life can lead a child to conclusions about worth, love, sexuality, safety, connection, and identity that may continue influencing adulthood. Hypnotherapy — How Nelson approaches trance, subconscious exploration, identifying beliefs, reframing emotional associations, and testing new responses. Memory & Meaning — Why the objective isn't necessarily changing what happened, but changing the interpretation and emotional significance attached to what happened. Shame & Identity — How repeated behavior can evolve from "I did something bad" into "I am bad," creating an identity that can perpetuate the cycle. Faith & Spirituality — How Nelson's Christian worldview informs his interpretation of truth, destructive beliefs, temptation, agency, and transformation. Identity Transformation — Where Nelson's work intersects with Frank's belief that real freedom comes from becoming the man who no longer looks at porn. Possibility — Why Nelson believes one of the first requirements for transformation is believing that genuine change is actually possible. In this deeply honest conversation, Coach Frank Rich sits down with entrepreneur, pastor, and founder of the 126 Brotherhood, Cody Jefferson, to explore why so many high-performing men are externally winning while silently struggling on the inside. Together, they unpack the hidden cost of performance, why achievement can never heal identity, and how many successful men unknowingly build businesses, careers, and lifestyles while neglecting the man behind it all. Drawing from decades of coaching leaders, entrepreneurs, husbands, and fathers—as well as Cody's own journey through childhood trauma, ministry, divorce, burnout, and rebuilding his life—they explore what it truly means to become a whole man. Hypnotherapist: Why You Can't Quit Porn (Even When You Want To) w/ Nelson Whiting | Ep. 341

What if the reason you keep repeating destructive behaviors has nothing to do with willpower? Millions of men are stuck in cycles they desperately want to break. They've tried accountability. They've tried blockers. They've tried discipline. They've tried "just trying harder." Yet they keep ending up back in the same place. In this powerful conversation, Coach Frank Rich sits down with clinical hypnotherapist and subconscious transformation expert Nelson Whiting to explore what may actually be keeping men trapped. Together, they dive deep into the hidden emotional patterns, subconscious beliefs, and identity stories that quietly drive pornography addiction, self-sabotage, anxiety, and other destructive behaviors. Although Frank and Nelson come from different professional backgrounds, they arrive at the same conclusion: Lasting freedom doesn't begin by changing your behavior. It begins by changing the man behind the behavior. Nelson shares insights from thousands of clinical sessions helping men overcome pornography addiction and explains why porn is rarely the real problem—it's often a solution to unresolved emotional pain. Frank expands on these ideas through the lens of identity transformation, sharing lessons from helping more than 1,800 men break free from pornography and rebuild their lives. The conversation also tackles the biggest misconceptions about hypnosis, why shame keeps men trapped, how subconscious programming influences everyday decisions, and why genuine transformation requires more than simply managing urges. The final portion of the episode shifts toward faith, prayer, and the deeper spiritual side of personal transformation, as both discuss how reconnecting with God ultimately changes the way a man sees himself. Whether you're struggling with pornography, anxiety, unhealthy habits, or simply feel stuck repeating the same patterns in life, this conversation offers a practical and hope-filled roadmap toward lasting change. In This Episode Why pornography is usually the symptom—not the root problem The hidden emotional drivers behind addiction and compulsive behaviors Why "I'm not good enough" becomes the foundation of so many destructive habits How subconscious beliefs shape everyday decisions Why willpower eventually fails without identity transformation The connection between shame, self-criticism, and relapse Why self-compassion creates more lasting change than self-condemnation What hypnosis actually is—and what most people misunderstand about it How childhood experiences continue influencing adult behavior The surprising relationship between identity and the subconscious mind Why many traditional recovery approaches fail to produce lasting freedom How to stop viewing setbacks as failure and start using them as feedback The role faith and prayer play in long-term transformation Daily practices that reinforce a healthier identity and stronger mindset Key Takeaways ✓ Pornography is often an attempt to solve emotional pain—not the actual problem. ✓ Lasting freedom requires changing the beliefs that shape your identity. ✓ Shame drains the emotional energy needed to create change. ✓ The subconscious mind influences far more of your behavior than most people realize. ✓ Progress—not perfection—is the path to lasting transformation. ✓ Freedom is built through consistent growth, not fear of failure. Complacency Is Not Collapse—It's Drift Most men don't ruin their lives overnight. They slowly drift through comfort, compromise, and lack of intentionality. 2. Success Can Become a Trap The same men who grind to build success often stop doing the very things that got them there. 3. Freedom Is a Daily Fight Whether in marriage, business, fitness, or recovery—discipline must be renewed every day. 4. Brotherhood Prevents Blind Spots Men rarely recognize their own drift in isolation. Strong accountability exposes complacency before it becomes collapse. 5. Your Family Feels Your Complacency When a man loses his edge, his marriage, children, and legacy suffer. 6. Faith Anchors Discipline A man rooted in truth and purpose is far less likely to drift when life gets hard. --- Connect with Frank and The Super Human Life on Social Media: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coachfrankrich/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/584284948647477/ Website: http://www.thesuperhumanlifepodcast.com/tshlhome YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjB4UrpxtNO2AFtDURMzoKQ
