This week we bring you an episode from the vault featuring American youngster Alex Michelsen. In late 2024 he sat at a career-high world No.41 ahead of his campaign at Next Gen ATP Finals, joining Viv and Matt during a rare break at home in California to discuss his meteoric rise. Michelsen began season 2024 ranked 97th and soared thanks to reaching two ATP finals — Newport and Winston-Salem — and winning more than 30 singles matches, including against top-10 opponent Alex de Minaur in Los Cabos. Now, the 22-year-old is on the brink of the top 30 after breaking through for his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the US Open, where he ultimately fell to France’s Tiafoe in a match that ended with one of the 2026 tournament’s most iconic moments. Barbara Schett: from the wall to the world’s top 10
Tennis has been a constant throughout Barbara Schett’s life. Like many before her, she began playing against a wall before her talent was spotted and channelled towards the professional game, where she debuted as a 14-year-old at her home event in Kitzbuhel, Austria. Schett’s career peaked during a memorable WTA era; she finished 1999 inside the top 10 along with Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, Serena and Venus Williams, Mary Pierce, Monica Seles and Amelie Mauresmo. She fondly remembers that era – and facing those icons – as well as reaching the 1999 US Open quarterfinals and stunning then-world No.2 Venus in the first round of Roland Garros in 2001. That same year she reached the AO mixed doubles final with Josh Eagle, who later became her husband and saw her move to Australia. She now divides her time between Queensland and Europe, remaining connected to the sport through her successful commentary career and role as WTA tournament ambassador in Linz. Evonne Goolagong Cawley: grace, greatness and a lasting legacy
With the 2026 National Indigenous Tennis Carnival concluding on the weekend, we’re releasing an interview with Evonne Goolagong Cawley, the Aussie legend who supported the creation of the annual event in Darwin. Goolagong chatted with Casey Dellacqua at last year’s Night of Champions in Melbourne, reliving the journey to career heights including seven Grand Slam singles titles and the world No.1 ranking. Celebrated for her graceful all-court play and revered the world over, Goolagong won her final Slam title as a mother at Wimbledon in 1980. Tristan Schoolkate: recharged and ready for North America
Having already played 19 tournaments in the first seven months of 2026, Tristan Schoolkate decided it was time to return home to “get out of the hamster wheel”. Barbora Krejcikova: “I never really felt like the player to win a Slam”
Two years ago, Viv sat down with Barbora Krejcikova on the eve of Wimbledon 2024 – a tournament the Czech star went on to win for her second Grand Slam title after Roland Garros in 2021. We’re bringing that episode back given Czech tennis is again at the forefront of the game, thanks to Linda Noskova’s triumph at the All England Club and last week’s tournament in Prague, where crowds packed the stands in another reminder of tennis’ enduring popularity there. While that’s all been happening Krejcikova has been showing hints of the elite level she can produce. Todd Woodbridge (Part 2): “I wanted to be better at Wimbledon than Roland Garros”
In the second part of our interview with Todd Woodbridge, we focus on the Australian legend’s Wimbledon memories and milestones. The storied tournament is where Woodbridge achieved some of his greatest career highlights, from winning the 1993 men’s doubles title – the first of five in a row with Mark Woodforde – to triumphing in nine of 10 men's doubles finals, plus reaching the singles semifinals in 1997. The fact he thrived at the All England Club is a testament to the power of a dream, former as a child when he would watch Wimbledon on the TV at night in front of the heater during the Australian winter. Lleyton Hewitt: three dreams achieved in a champion career
At the recent Night of Champions fundraiser in Melbourne, Lleyton Hewitt revealed his three tennis dreams were Grand Slam success, reaching No.1, and Davis Cup glory. He achieved all three, reflecting on them in this special interview with Davis Cup teammate and fellow Aussie tennis icon Todd Woodbridge. Hewitt’s talent was obvious when as a 16-year-old, he upset Andre Agassi en route to his first career ATP title in Adelaide, vision we unearthed from the archive. And it wasn’t long before Hewitt peaked on the Grand Slam stage, first in doubles at the 2000 US Open – beating top seeds Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde along the way to his first doubles major – and a year later in singles, when he toppled the mighty Pete Sampras for his first singles Slam in New York. Mary Carillo: an iconic broadcaster ready for the Hall of Fame
In August, Mary Carillo will be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame alongside Roger Federer in what promises to be an unforgettable ceremony. Carillo will enter the Contributor Category, honouring those “who have made a transcendent impact” on tennis. Speaking to Viv and Matt from her home in Florida, Carillo – one of the sport’s best storytellers – recalled discovering the game as a child in New York City, where she joined the same local club as John McEnroe. They were later coached by the legendary Harry Hopman and went on to win the 1977 Roland Garros mixed doubles title together. While Carillo’s pro career, in which she rose to world No.33 in singles, was cut short by knee injuries, she was quickly discovered and shone as a tennis broadcaster – calling some of the sport’s greatest matches, covering its defining eras and rivalries, and blazing a trail for women in commentary. Her broadcasting career has since expanded well beyond tennis, spanning Olympics coverage, documentary making and even national dog shows, while earning multiple awards – including six Emmys and three prestigious Peabodys. Stan Smith: from Grand Slam champion to fashion icon
Many people will know Stan Smith as the man behind the iconic adidas Stan Smith shoe, which is not surprising given there have been more than 100 million pairs sold and collaborations with the likes of Pharrell Williams and Stella McCartney. But Smith is also known for his legendary tennis career – among his seven Grand Slam titles were two singles majors (Wimbledon and the US Open) and he rose to world No.1 in the early 1970s. He was also a part of seven triumphant US Davis Cup teams, many times battling it out with a golden generation of Australian legends in one of the sport's most enduring rivalries. The American star was one of the original players to use tennis as a platform for other great achievements — he campaigned against apartheid, set up his own academy, developed Stan Smith events and even became an author. He’s also a former president of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Tennis is the thread throughout Smith's lifetime, and as you will hear in this interview, the sport is all the richer for having him in it.
