They began even before the Gloom King, but the resources that our efforts to rebuild brought to these entities only grew their power at an alarming rate. They took resources in in larger and larger bites leaving little at the table that once was plentiful. It is not only they to blame, but us as well. We allowed this to happen. We may have had reason to focus else where, but we bear the blame for this as well.

It is said that the wide variety of folk in these lands are to reflect the many different facets of this creator. That we were made to be just. To be good. To be stewards of this land and to make it better. In the last few years things have been getting harder for the folks in Muckland Harbor. The murky water of the Quagmash are getting murkier, and skrimp and mobsters aren’t nearly as plentiful as before. The folks of Muckland Harbor are tough, though. A little island set in the wide rivers, the people there have a laid back quality. Things move slowly in Capstan, following the gentle, but constant lead of the waters. While other communities further down have seen, well, issues with what the Companies have been putting in the water. Take Marshgate, for example. It is one of the oldest cities in Erm, growing out of an ancient trading hub that existed between the people of the Forest that used to be and the denizens of the Quagmash. It was one of the first cities to see the true terror the Gloom Kings forces. The fallout of that major attack,and the disappearance of the forest, has put Marshgate on hard times. Take, for instance, the ranger of Bogwatch. They have patrolled the border of the Use Ta’Be Forrest as far back as when those trees stood, lush and green. While their order did see the lands changed, they still vowed to protect the people living in them, which nowadays means stopping raiding groups from bandits like the Red Boots. At first they offered money, then trades and partnerships. Of course, the companies can't, say, march an army into a small community and take. That would be just ridiculous. An ancient evil on the rise again. It was something old men said deep into their cups late at the tavern. In the age of the dungeon, with mechanical wonders and bustling cities, these tales of the old world seemed like just, tall tales. They were not. The Gloom King had risen once again. His fog rolling slowly over the lands, choking out light and joy. His force of dark monster growing. It should have been an evil that united the Land of Erm, much as it had done in the days of old, but city states and tycoons all squabbled as the light slowly faded. That isn’t to say brave sous did not rise to meet the occasion. Five heroes fought hard to stay the hand of the Gloom King. No one but they know what happened that day, but despite their efforts, they did not stop the Gloom King. Despite their failure, another soul did slay the ancient evil A hero of a noble house, of noble blood. Saving the Land of Erm from disaster, he would go on to experience wealth and fortune. That was ten years ago. The world has mostly recovered, with vestiges of the Gloom King’s influence all but a memory.
