The Path Beyond Binge Eating

Molly Dyer | Licensed Therapist, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, Binge Eating Recovery Coach

Binge eating has a way of making you feel like the problem — like if you just had more discipline, more willpower, more resolve, you'd finally get this under control. But binge eating isn't a willpower problem, and you were never the problem to begin with.

The Path Beyond Binge Eating is for women 30 and older who are ready to identify, interrupt, and replace binge eating, restriction, chronic dieting, and emotional eating — and start creating a relationship with food and body something that actually lasts.

Each week, Licensed Therapist, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, and Binge Eating Recovery Coach Molly Dyer will invite you on a path through the practical steps of moving beyond binge eating and toward a consistent, sustainable relationship with food, your body, and yourself.

Informed by 12 years of clinical experience and a Polyvagal lens, this show is not therapy — it is informational and educational, for women who are done waiting to lose weight or change their body to start living. This is where binge eating stops running the show and you start finding your way back to yourself.

    12. If I Stop Dieting, I'll Never Stop Eating

Message Molly "I know dieting isn't working, but if I stop, I'm scared I'll never stop eating." If that thought has kept you on one diet after another, you are not the only one. The fear of losing control around food can start to feel like the only thing holding you together. In this episode, Molly Dyer explores where that fear comes from: your own history with diets, the messages of diet culture, and the pendulum swing into rebound eating that can follow a period of restriction. You'll hear how the fear of uncontrolled eating can actually set up the very eating you are afraid of, and how all-or-nothing thinking keeps the pendulum moving between total control and total chaos. Molly also explores how the weekend "cheat day" teaches you that food is a reward you have to earn, and she speaks honestly to a question she hears often: "But what about my body?" This episode is for you if you feel tired of dieting but afraid to let it go. You'll leave with a simple, optional practice for looking at the thoughts behind food fear and finding a little more room in the middle. Take a breath, and let's explore the space between the diet and the rebound.

    11. The Shame of Eating in Secret | A Binge Eating Perspective

Message Molly You are standing in the pantry after everyone has gone to bed, eating quickly and listening for footsteps, hoping no one walks into the kitchen. Eating in secret is far more common than most women realize, but the shame around it keeps it hidden, so almost no one talks about it. In this episode, we look at secret eating with curiosity and compassion. You'll hear the quiet, ordinary ways it shows up, from eating in the car before you pull into your neighborhood to replacing a box of cookies before anyone notices it's empty. We explore why this is not a willpower problem, how fear of judgment and diet culture beliefs make hiding feel safe, and how your brain learns that secrecy equals safety. Drawing on Brene Brown's research on shame and Dr. Kristin Neff's work on self-compassion, we talk about why shame grows in secrecy and what may help it soften. If you have ever eaten the salad in front of others and then eaten what you really wanted once you were alone, this episode is for you. You'll leave with a simple, optional practice rooted in Molly's framework: Identify, Interrupt, & Replace. Take a breath, and let's look at this together. 10. Unwritten Food & Body Rules | A Binge Eating Perspective

Message Molly "Don't eat after 7:00 at night." "You have to earn your food." "Smaller is always better." If rules like these sound less like opinions and more like plain truth, you are not the only one. Most of the food and body rules we live by were never written down, and no one ever sat us down to teach them out loud. In this episode, we slow down and look closely at those unwritten rules: what they sound like, where they come from, and why so many women seem to just know them. You'll hear about a fridge magnet that quietly became a food rule, the places these beliefs take root (family comments, praise for weight loss, social media, and clothing sizes treated like a report card), and the four kinds of rules many of us carry: food rules, weight rules, body image rules, and the self-image rules they lead to. We also connect back to the nervous system ladder from last episode and why rigid rules keep you on the middle rung, alert and bracing, trying to get it right. This episode is for you if every meal has started to feel like a test you pass or fail, or if you've been told the answer is more discipline. You started following these rules to feel safe, liked, and in control, and now you get to question them. You'll leave with a gentle, invitational practice for the week ahead: notice one unwritten rule, write it down, and ask, "What does this rule promise?" For a free Unwritten Rules Reflection Checklist, email connect@mollydyer.com. Take a breath, get comfortable, and let's look at the rules you never chose.

    9. Body Regulation and Binge Eating

Message Molly A binge can feel terrible and regulating at the same time, and that's not a contradiction. Food offers powerful sensory input- taste, warmth, predictability- and for a while it genuinely lowers emotional intensity. Understanding why makes so much more sense than judging yourself for it. Building on the polyvagal ladder from last week's episode, we trace the entire binge cycle through Deb Dana's nervous system states, from a body already running low on capacity, through the alarm bells of fight or flight, into the binge itself, and often into a shutdown that leaves you numb and disconnected. You will hear why a binge can feel terrible and regulating at the same time, why restriction always shows up afterward promising safety, and why that same restriction is what sets the next binge in motion. This conversation is for you if you have ever asked why you can't “willpower” your way out of a binge. Instead, we ask a different question: what is your nervous system trying to accomplish through this behavior? Once you can name that, healing stops being about more discipline and starts being about real, felt safety in your body.

    8. Your Nervous System | A Binge eating Perspective

Message Molly Have you ever felt your heart start racing before your mind caught up with what scared you? Your body reacts to danger and safety long before you consciously decide anything, and that quiet, automatic reaction plays a much bigger role in your binge eating pattern than you might think. In this episode, you will learn about your autonomic nervous system and the two branches that run it underneath your awareness all day long. You will hear how Dr. Stephen Porges' polyvagal theory explains your body's built-in scanning system, and how therapist Deb Dana turned that theory into something you can actually picture: a three-rung ladder that moves between feeling safe and connected, fight or flight, and shutdown or disconnection. You will hear real examples of what each rung feels like, and you are invited to try the ladder practice yourself, using either your own memories or a scene from a show, movie, or book. This episode is for you if you have ever wondered why a binge can feel less like a choice and more like something pulling you, because so much of that pull lives on this same ladder. Understanding where you are on it is one more piece of the awareness that supports real change.

    7. Identify, Interrupt, & Replace Binge Eating

Message Molly You feel the urge building before you have even decided to respond to it. One moment you are moving through your day, and the next you are standing in the kitchen with food already in your hands, wondering how you got there so fast. If that gap between the urge and the binge feels like it disappears before you can do anything about it, this episode is for you. This week you get a three-step framework, Identify, Interrupt, and Replace, the same process born out of client work and later recognized in Molly's own healing path. You will learn what it means to become a curious, compassionate observer of your patterns instead of an automatic responder to them, why pausing before you react is one of the most active and courageous things you can do, and how to actually use that pause once you find it. You will also hear the five-minute timer practice, a simple way to delay a binge long enough for the urge to shift, along with specific ideas for what to do inside those five minutes. This conversation is for you if the binge ever feels faster than your ability to think, or if you have tried to white-knuckle your way through an urge and come up short. It offers small, practicable shifts instead of a complete overhaul, because those are the shifts that actually last. Settle in, because today we are building a practice you can return to again and again.

    6. What Role Does Binge Eating Fill?

Message Molly Maybe food has been the thing that never let you down. Maybe it showed up when nothing else did and felt safe to turn to. If binge eating has ever felt less like a problem and more like something you can't imagine your life without, this episode is for you. In this episode, we look at the different roles binge eating can quietly take on in a woman's life: a friend who shows up, a source of predictability, a secret space that's only yours, and a way to numb out and disconnect when everything feels like too much. You'll hear why removing a behavior without understanding its role leaves an empty space, and why the push and pull between wanting it gone and relying on it makes sense. This conversation is for you if you've ever finished a binge already planning tomorrow's restriction, or if you've held onto something in secret because it felt like the one space that didn't require you to perform. It's an invitation to get curious about what you've needed, so healing can start building something real in its place. Take a breath, and let's begin.

    5. Awareness: The Key to Interrupt Binge Eating

Message Molly Awareness is the key to interrupting binge eating and healing your relationship with food, body, and self. In this episode, Molly breaks down what awareness means and why the binge eating cycle runs on autopilot when awareness is missing. Molly describes how even a few seconds of noticing can open space between an urge and a response. She ends with a simple awareness practice you can take with you, with examples that are more neutral and not intended to be related to your eating pattern to begin with. If you've ever felt stuck in the restrict-urge-binge cycle, this episode offers a gentle first step out of it. To learn more or how you can work with Molly, Visit www.MollyDyer.com

    4. The Body Checking Trap | Body Image and Binge Eating

Message Molly Body checking can feel like reassurance, but it may be pulling you deeper into the very patterns you are trying to change. In this episode, Molly explains how mirrors, clothing, comparison, and other checking behaviors can quietly reinforce restriction and binge eating. You’ll learn why these habits often develop over time, how they can shift your sense of worth outside of yourself, and what they may be triggering beneath the surface. 2. Why Your Brain Pulls You Back to Binge Eating

Message Molly If you've ever wondered why, you can't just stop binge eating — even when you desperately want to — this episode offers a shift in how you understand why you have felt so stuck. In this episode, Molly Dyer breaks down what is actually happening in your brain when binge eating becomes a pattern. You'll learn why binge eating is a brain and nervous system response, not a willpower problem — and why that distinction is the foundation of everything. Molly also introduces her Polyvagal lens and explains how your nervous system shapes the urge to binge in ways that have nothing to do with discipline or desire. You'll walk away with one simple practice to try this week — not a fix, just a noticing — that begins to build the curiosity and self-awareness that real change is built on. If you've spent years blaming yourself for binge eating, this episode is where that story starts to shift. If you want to learn more about how you can work with Molly, visit MollyDyer.com

    3. Why Women Bond Over Diet's | A Path Beyond Binge Eating episode on diet culture, comparison, and connection."

Message Molly Why do so many women feel closest to each other over a shared diet — and so alone the moment they step off the plan? In this episode, Molly unpacks the biological drive women have to bond with one another, how diet culture quietly hijacks that drive into comparison and competition, and — crucially — how the disconnection that follows can become a direct trigger into the restrict-binge cycle. If you've ever felt torn between wanting to heal your relationship with food and wanting to belong, this episode names that tension and offers a different way forward.
