There’s a problem with True Crime.

Creators idolize perpetrators, shame victims, or are completely checked out on cases while they focus on other things. However, we can’t forget there are victims who lost their lives and families who are still grieving to this day.

Furthermore, many True Crime outlets spend their time focusing on themselves or rambling, instead of getting right to the facts of the case. We hear you, this is frustrating.

The Misery Machine focuses on cases the media fails to give proper attention to. We want to help give those a voice that never got to have one, to begin with. We also cover aspects of cases that other podcasts might look the other way on, and the way that these cases impact their communities for generations. It’s not enough to simply cover a case, our platform must be used to make a difference.

The Horrifying Case of Hailey Marie Owens
This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Springfield, Missouri, to discuss the case of Hailey Marie Owens, a 10-year-old girl was abducted, sexually assaulted, and killed by Craig Wood. Her case sparked national outrage, led to significant changes in local law enforcement response times, and inspired legislative reform regarding child safety alerts. Hailey Owens was walking home from a friend's house in broad daylight in northwest Springfield when 45-year-old Craig Wood pulled up next to her in a Ford Ranger. After pretending to ask for directions, he lunged from the vehicle, grabbed her, and threw her into the truck. Crucial eyewitnesses pursued the truck and successfully noted its license plate number, providing it directly to the police. Using the license plate details, law enforcement traced the truck to Craig's home. Upon entering the house hours later, investigators discovered that Hailey had already been raped and shot in the back of the head. It should be noted that Craig Wood was a local school district employee and youth sports coach. In 2017, a jury found Craig guilty of first-degree murder. However, because the jury deadlock occurred during the penalty phase, the final sentencing fell to the judge. In 2018, Greene County Judge Thomas Mountjoy officially sentenced him to death. Craig's legal team filed multiple appeals over the years, arguing ineffective counsel and challenging statements made during the penalty phase. The Missouri Supreme Court unanimously denied his final appeal on January 13, 2026, officially affirming his death sentence. He remains on death row at the Potosi Correctional Center. The Tragic Case of Amanda Victoria Brown
This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Tampa, Florida, to discuss the case of 7-year-old Amanda Victoria Brown, who tragically disappeared from her home on September 11th, 1998. Her high-profile case led to the ultimate conviction of a repeat offender, although her physical remains have never been found. On the morning of September 11th, Amanda's mother, Kathy Hartman, woke up at around 6:00 AM to discover that her daughter was missing from her bedroom. Also missing from the trailer was Willie Seth Crain Jr, a 52-year-old local crab fisherman whom Kathy had met at a bar a couple of days prior and allowed into her home. Willie was a convicted child molester who had previously served time in prison. Although Amanda’s body was never recovered, investigators discovered traces of Amanda's blood on Willie’s boxer shorts, a tissue, and a toilet seat inside his trailer. He was arrested, tried, and found guilty of first-degree murder and kidnapping in 1999. He was sentenced to death. The Horrific Case of Tracey Woodford
This week, Drewby and Yergy head across the pond to Pontypridd, South Wales, to discuss the case of Tracey Woodford, a quiet woman from Rhydyfelin who was brutally murdered, sexually assaulted post-mortem, and dismembered in April of 2015. Her killer, Christopher May, a 50-year-old former butcher, was convicted of her murder and sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 28 years. On April 21st, 2015, Tracey met Christopher at the Skinny Dog pub. The two left the pub together at closing time and walked toward Christopher's flat in the Graig area. When Tracey failed to return home and could not be reached, her family reported her missing. Three days later, on April 24th, police officers conducting routine inquiries visited May's flat. Upon searching the property, they discovered a horrific scene... The Tragic Case of Emma Grace Cole
This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Smyrna, Delaware, to discuss the case of 3-year-old Emma Grace Cole, who became the victim of a tragic and highly publicized case of fatal child abuse and torture. On September 13, 2019, Emma's charred skeletal remains were found in the bushes near the Smyrna-Clayton Little Lass Softball fields. Because her body was severely burned and left without identification, investigators spent more than a year working to identify her. She was referred to by law enforcement as "Baby Elle" until a credible tip led to her identification in October 2020. Court documents later revealed that Emma endured an agonizing final year of life. Her mother, Kristie Haas, and stepfather, Brandon Haas, subjected Emma and her half-siblings to starvation, extreme physical discipline, and forced exercise. Emma was heavily singled out for the abuse. After Emma became unresponsive following a severe beating, her mother attempted to revive her with a cold shower rather than calling 911. After Emma died, Kristie burned her body and dumped her remains. The couple then lied to family members, claiming Emma was away at a mental health facility, and fled Delaware for Indiana and Pennsylvania, where they were eventually arrested. The Tragic Case of Jersey Bridgeman
This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Arkansas to discuss the case of Jersey bridgeman, a 6-year-old girl , who became the subject of widespread national attention following her tragic abduction and murder on November 20, 2012. Before her murder, Jersey had already suffered severe, publicized abuse at the hands of her family. In 2011, her father, David Bridgeman, and stepmother, Jana Bridgeman, were arrested for chaining her to a dresser as a form of punishment. Both pleaded guilty in June 2012 to false imprisonment and permitting the abuse of a minor. Her stepmother was sentenced to 12 years in prison, and her father was sentenced to 18 years. Following their arrest, Jersey was placed back into the custody of her biological mother. On November 20, 2012, just days after her sixth birthday, Jersey was reported missing from her home. Later that day, law enforcement discovered her body hidden in a bedroom closet inside a vacant house located between her home and a neighbor's house. An autopsy confirmed that her cause of death was asphyxia due to strangulation, and forensic evidence indicated she had been sexually assaulted. Police arrested Zachary Holly, a 28-year-old next-door neighbor and trusted family friend who had been babysitting Jersey and her younger sibling the night she disappeared. Zachary had even pretended to help detectives search for Jersey before his arrest. The Horrific Crimes of Jack Owen Spillman III
This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Washington state to discuss the crimes of Jack Owen Spillman III. Known as the "Werewolf Butcher," Jack is a serial killer and rapist from Spokane, Washington, who is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole at the Washington State Penitentiary. In April 1995, Jack murdered 48-year-old Rita Huffman and her 15-year-old daughter, Mandy Huffman, in East Wenatchee, Washington. Following his arrest for those crimes, he also confessed to the 1994 slaying of 9-year-old Penny Davis in Tonasket, Washington. Jack broke into homes, brutally slaughtered his victims, and subsequently engaged in gruesome post-mortem sexual mutilation and theatrical staging. He once told a cellmate that he imagined himself as a werewolf stalking its prey. His personal journals, later recovered by investigators, detailed dark fantasies of consumption, transformation, and primitive animalistic dominance. While in custody, he openly declared to a cellmate that his ultimate ambition was to become "the world's greatest serial killer." The Tragic Case of Marley & Elijah Thomas

This week, Drewby and Yergy head over to the UK to discuss the case of Marley and Elijah Thomas, two young boys who were drowned in a bathtub by their mother, Kara Alexander, after an evening of smoking "skunk," which is a catchall for strong cannabis strains. On December 16th, 2022, the two boys were found dead at their home on Cornwallis Road in Dagenham, East London. Their father, Selvin Thomas, became concerned after failing to reach Kara and went to the house, where he discovered the boys' bodies lying together in a bunk bed. Post-mortem examinations determined that Marley and Elijah died from either drowning or suffocation. During her trial at Kingston Crown Court, Kara denied the murders. She claimed she had put the boys in the bath and fell asleep, arguing that they had "accidentally" drowned. Prosecutors successfully dismantled this defense, proving the children could not have drowned accidentally at the same time and that she had deliberately held them underwater. The Tragic Case of Zya Singleton
This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Philadelphia, PA, to discuss the case of 4-year-old Zya Singleton. On October 30th, 2019, emergency services responded to a home in Philadelphia's Fairmount neighborhood. Zya's guardian, Samiya Brown, claimed that the toddler had accidentally fallen out of a second-story window while playing with a cat. Zya was hospitalized in critical condition and tragically died from her injuries and a severe blood infection on November 3rd. Medical professionals and the city medical examiner quickly determined that the window-fall story was a lie. An autopsy revealed that Zya had endured years of horrific, systemic physical abuse. Her injuries included severe malnutrition, multiple broken bones, acid, cigarette, and thermal burns, human bite marks, as well as homemade stitches that Samiya had haphazardly sewn into Zya's skin, which ultimately led to sepsis. The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office described the tragedy as "potentially one of the worst cases of child abuse anyone has ever seen." Samiya was immediately arrested and denied bail. In May of 2022, she avoided a first-degree murder trial by pleading guilty to third-degree murder, endangering the welfare of a child, and possessing an instrument of crime. Zya’s biological mother, Jasmine Singleton, had voluntarily given custody of Zya to Samiya, who was a family friend and married to her stepbrother, around two years prior to the murder. Jasmine did so because she lacked the immediate financial means to care for her daughter and wanted to prevent Zya from entering the formal foster care system. The Tragic Cases of Baby Jeremiah & The Mystery Child
This week, Drewby and Yergy discuss two cases. The first is about a newborn baby named Jeremiah who was tragically found dead inside a construction site porta potty in Gretna, Louisiana. The child's mother, 37-year-old Lakesha Lemelle, was indicted for second-degree murder by a Jefferson Parish grand jury. It was determined at autopsy that baby Jeremiah was a full term, 7.2 pound infant who was born alive. His cause of death was listed as asphyxia due to drowning in raw sewage. The second story is about a little boy whose name we don't have, and that's because he made it out alive... But not before the new woman in his father's life (allegedly) attempted to burn his ear off with scalding water because she found him "ugly." The Tragic Case of Josefina Cunningham
This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Rensselaer, New York, to discuss the horrific case of Josefina "Josie" Cunningham, an adorable toddler who was raped and murdered by her mother's boyfriend, 34-year-old Robert Fisher. Between July 6th and 7th of 2023, Robert was babysitting 3-year-old Josie at her home on Broadway in Rensselaer. During this time, he crushed prescription medication and forced the child to drink it. While she was conscious, he brutally assaulted her. When the child's mother returned, she found Josie unresponsive and foaming at the mouth. Robert had heavily staged the crime scene, positioning the toddler on her back with her hands folded, and had aggressively used Clorox bleach wipes to scrub her face and body in an attempt to destroy DNA evidence. She scrubbed so hard, that the pigment was removed from her skin. Josie was rushed to Albany Medical Center Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her official cause of death was ruled as homicidal violence driven by acute internal trauma, lacerations, and acute drug intoxication. The Tragic Case of Tyler & Ariana Payne
This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Tucson, Arizona, to discuss the case of Christopher Mathew Payne, who was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death in 2009 for the brutal starvation and abuse of his two children, 4-year-old Tyler, and 3-year-old Ariana. His live-in girlfriend, Reina Gonzales, pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and was sentenced to 22 years in prison in exchange for her testimony against him. The horrific abuse unfolded over several months in 2006... The couple locked Tyler and Ariana inside a small bedroom closet. While the couple heavily abused heroin, they initially fed the children only one sandwich a day before cutting off food entirely. The children were kept permanently in the dark closet without bathroom access. Autopsy reports later revealed that Ariana suffered a broken spine near the time of her death, alongside numerous healed broken ribs and a broken shoulder. Ariana died first from severe starvation and physical trauma. Christopher left her body in the closet with her brother Tyler, who was still alive. Tyler died approximately one week later. He then stuffed both children's bodies into plastic bags and stored them inside a large plastic container. He then rented a midtown Tucson storage unit and locked the container away. The crimes went unnoticed until February 2007, when the storage facility facility manager cleared out the locker due to non-payment. Ariana's decomposed remains were found inside. Tyler’s body was never recovered, and investigators believe he was discarded in a dumpster that was emptied into the Los Reales Landfill. The murders sparked severe public outcry when Arizona Child Protective Services records revealed that caseworkers had visited the home multiple times prior to the deaths but failed to uncover the extreme ongoing abuse. The Bizarre Case of Matthew James Dunmire
This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Ohio to discuss the case of Matthew James Dunmire, a a 31-year-old aspiring musician and father who was murdered in March 2021. His death became the subject of a high-profile federal investigation after his body was discovered in a secluded wooded area of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. On March 5, 2021, Matthew left a local bar to meet a woman he had been communicating with online. Surveillance footage and phone records tracked him to an Airbnb and eventually to the park's Terra Vista Natural Study Area. He was shot once in the back of the head. Hikers discovered his body three days later. Chelsea Perkins (aka Chelsea Savage), a 35-year-old U.S. Coast Guard veteran and adult film performer from Virginia, was identified as the killer. Chelsea lured Matthew to the national park under the false pretense of filming a video. Prosecutors characterized the crime as a calculated "revenge killing". Chelsea had accused Matthew of sexual assault in Virginia Beach back in 2017. Local police investigated at the time, but no charges were filed due to a lack of evidence. In May of 2025, Chelsea Perkins pleaded guilty in federal court to second-degree murder and using a firearm in a violent crime. On September 9, 2025, a federal judge sentenced her to 22.5 years in prison. She is serving her sentence at a federal facility in West Virginia. This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Oklahoma to discuss the case of Dustin Joel Walker and Cherie Dawn Walker, a couple who received life prison sentences in mid-2026 following a horrific child sexual abuse and neglect investigation in Muskogee County. The case came to light in August 2025 when Cherie's 11-year-old daughter gave birth at home without any prenatal care or medical assistance, and subsequent DNA tests proved that her stepfather, Dustin, was the father of the child. : When authorities raided the Muskogee residence, they discovered the couple's five other children (ages 2 to 9) living in absolute squalor. The home had no running water or air conditioning, was heavily doused in animal feces and urine, and the children were found completely unclothed. Cherie's mother, Michelle Lynn Justus, was charged with six counts of felony child neglect. She has not entered a guilty plea, and is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The Case of Scooter Abrahamsen, Amanda Logue (Sunny Dae) & Jason Andrews (aka Addison)
This week, Drewby and Yergy head to New Port Richey, Florida, to discuss the case of 41-year-old Scooter Abrahamsen, who was brutally murdered on May 15th, 2010 by pornstar couple Amanda Logue (aka Sunny Dae) and Jason Andrews (aka Addison). Scooter, known locally as a fun-loving biker and owner of Embellishing Tattoo & Piercing (among other businesses), hosted a sex party at his residence. He hired Amanda to work at the party. While guests were present, Amanda and her boyfriend exchanged an extensive series of graphic text messages plotting Scooter's murder and robbery. Once the other guests departed around 5:00 AM, Amanda instructed Scooter to lie face down on a massage table. She then messaged Jason, who was waiting outside in a car, giving him the signal to enter. Together, they attacked Scooter, stabbing him multiple times and fracturing his skull with a sledgehammer. After the murder, they stole $6,000 in cash, credit cards, a laptop, and cameras. The Alleged Crimes of Sarah Grace Patrick (Kristin & James Brock)
This week, Drewby and Yergy head back to Georgia to discuss the crimes of Sarah Grace Patrick, a teenage girl who, according to prosecutors, killed her mother and stepfather in cold blood. On February 20th, 2025, 41-year-old Kristin Brock and her husband, 45-year-old James Brock were found shot to death in their bed. Their then 5-year-old daughter discovered their bodies. Sarah, who was 16 at the time, called 911. Following the murders, Sarah posted emotional videos on TikTok and delivered a funeral eulogy that concluded with "I'm sorry," which prosecutors contend was part of an effort to manipulate public opinion. She also contacted a number of true crime content creators, begging for them to cover he parent's story... Some did. Sarah remains held without bond at the Carroll County Jail. She has pleaded not guilty, and her biological father, as well as several members of her church have publicly maintained that she is 100% innocent.
