Racing thoughts at 3am? Why it happens and how to get back to sleep
You wake up at 3am, can't get back to sleep, and within a minute your mind has found something, the conversation that went badly, the money, someone you love, and it turns it over, and over again, and then an hour has gone. In this episode I talk about why the problem feels so much bigger at that hour. Your mind isn't more truthful at night, it just has nothing to check its stories against, and a mind that's awake with nothing to do goes looking for whatever is unresolved. Then what I actually do. I give the worry an appointment, a real time and a real place, and I keep it. I don't look at the clock, I don't pick up the phone, and I count my breath backwards from nine to zero, and start again. For the nights when even counting is too much, I've recorded a Yoga Nidra for Sleep. It's free, and the link is below. Set it up before you go to bed with the volume low, so at three in the morning all you do is press play, and if you fall asleep in the first two minutes, job done.
