    Auburn football has reached a pivotal week of the season. After the loss to Florida exposed problems on both sides of the football, Auburn now has to figure out what can actually be fixed before Vanderbilt comes to Jordan Hare Stadium. Offensively, everything starts with Byrum Brown and the offensive line. Brown was sacked seven times against Florida, and several of those sacks weren't simply the offensive line getting beaten. Brown held onto the football too long on multiple plays and didn't maneuver the pocket well enough to escape pressure. That has to improve. But Auburn also has to stop asking a struggling offensive line to consistently protect for extended periods. If the line can't give Brown four seconds, the coaching staff needs to design an offense that doesn't require four seconds. Quick throws. Designed quarterback runs. Read option. QB power. Screens.     ALERT: Byrum Brown Is Holding the Ball TOO LONG | Auburn Podcast

    Auburn football survived some of these problems against Baylor. Against Florida, those same problems became much harder to overcome. Start with Byrum Brown. Brown's athletic ability is obvious. He can escape the pocket and suddenly rip off a 20 or 30 yard run. That's what makes it so frustrating when he sits in the pocket on another play, holds the football and takes a sack. At this point, it's fair to ask why. Is Brown taking too long to move through his progressions? Is he waiting for receivers to come open instead of anticipating throws? Does he need to recognize earlier when nothing is available and simply use his legs? Those are questions the film has to answer. The offensive line certainly deserves its share of criticism. Against Florida, there were situations where the Gators showed pressure, overloaded one side and Auburn still didn't appear to have an answer. But Auburn has to help the offensive line too. After the loss to Florida, one of the biggest questions facing Alex Golesh and this Auburn offense is why Jeremiah Cobb isn't getting more opportunities. When Cobb got the football early against Florida, he produced. Yet Auburn repeatedly moved away from the running game and put more responsibility on Byrum Brown and a passing attack operating behind an offensive line that continues to struggle. That's difficult to understand. If Auburn can't consistently protect Brown, then the answer can't simply be asking him to drop back more often and make something happen.     Auburn football has a Byrum Brown consistency problem, but the bigger question might be what Auburn is asking its quarterback to do in the first place. Brown has shown exactly why Auburn wanted him. He's a tremendous athlete who can create plays that most quarterbacks simply can't make. But those flashes haven't come with enough consistency, and the turnovers are becoming increasingly difficult to overlook. Through three games, Brown's touchdown to interception ratio is far too close for comfort. Some of the interceptions have been bad decisions. Others have come from inaccurate throws. His pocket movement and ability to recognize opportunities downfield also deserve a closer look. That doesn't mean Brown was Auburn's biggest problem against Florida. He still made enough plays for Auburn to have an opportunity to win. The defense forced essentially one meaningful punt all night, struggled to tackle and repeatedly failed to get off the field. Auburn tied the game at 17, had an opportunity to completely change the momentum and then watched Florida regain control. But offensively, there's another question that isn't going away. Alex Golesh did not run away from Auburn football’s problems following the loss to Florida. Auburn’s head coach addressed everything from the Tigers’ brutal offensive start to play calling, Byrum Brown, seven sacks, offensive line problems, 24 missed tackles and what has to change before an undefeated Vanderbilt team comes to Jordan Hare Stadium. One of the biggest questions coming out of Florida was simple: Who is really calling Auburn’s plays? Golesh provided a direct answer. Joel Gordon remains Auburn’s play caller, but Golesh explained that the process is a group effort. Golesh, Kodi Burns and other members of the offensive staff provide input throughout the game, while Gordon ultimately makes the calls. Golesh also took responsibility for Auburn’s inability to get started offensively. The Tigers opened the Florida game with three disastrous possessions, but Golesh pointed out an incredible statistic. Auburn had six drives where it picked up the initial first down and scored touchdowns on five of those possessions. The problem was getting the offense started. That means finding a way to get Byrum Brown comfortable earlier. Golesh discussed using the quarterback run game, quick passes, movement passes and downfield shots to establish that rhythm. Protection remains another major concern. Auburn surrendered seven sacks against Florida, and Golesh admitted the Tigers have NOT settled on their best five offensive linemen. Who is really calling the plays for Auburn football when things start going wrong? Alex Golesh addressed that question directly following Auburn’s loss to Florida, and his answer gives a much clearer picture of how the Tigers are handling their offense. Joel Gordon is the play caller, but Golesh made it clear that Auburn’s offensive operation is a group effort with multiple coaches providing input throughout the game. More importantly, Golesh put the responsibility for Auburn’s slow starts on the entire offensive operation, including himself. Auburn’s first three drives against Florida went nowhere, but once the Tigers finally picked up a first down, the offense looked dramatically different. Golesh pointed out that Auburn scored touchdowns on five of the six drives in which the Tigers picked up an initial first down. That makes the biggest question pretty simple: How does Auburn find that rhythm earlier? The running game could be a major part of the answer. Jeremiah Cobb and Omar Mabson have combined for 53 carries while Byrum Brown has 52 carries. Cobb and Mabson are averaging more than five yards per carry combined, while Brown is averaging 3.2 yards per attempt. That balance has to be examined. Brown’s ability to run is an important part of what makes him dangerous, but Auburn also needs to get its running backs involved consistently. Cobb has shown he can produce when given opportunities, and Auburn cannot continue talking about establishing the run without giving its backs enough chances to control games.     Auburn football doesn't just need to beat Vanderbilt. The Tigers need to look different doing it. After the loss to Florida, there are legitimate questions about Byrum Brown, Auburn's offensive line, Jeremiah Cobb's usage, the running game and whether Alex Golesh can adjust his offense to the personnel he actually has. Start with Brown. There were too many plays against Florida where Brown held onto the football waiting for something to develop. Auburn's offensive line hasn't played well enough for that. At some point, the coaching staff has to recognize what this line can and cannot do and build the offense accordingly. Get the football out quicker. Give Brown easier decisions. If the throw isn't there and there's room to run, make the decision and go. Auburn can't continue allowing slow developing plays to turn into sacks and negative situations. That connects directly to another problem: Auburn hasn't started fast offensively this season. The Tigers have yet to consistently take control on the first couple of drives. That's something that needs to change against Vanderbilt. Auburn needs to establish rhythm early rather than spending another Saturday trying to figure out its offense after falling behind. The Tigers need consistency. They need a running game. They need their other playmakers involved. Most importantly, Auburn needs an identity. The defensive conversation isn't much more encouraging.
