Elizabeth Santelmann

Welcome to Sunshine in my Nest Podcast! I'm your host Elizabeth Santelmann. I hope these chats with our mentors about gospel-centered living will equip and inspire you to grow spiritually, love your family, and invest in your local community!

Through the conversations with these women of faith I’ve learned to pray and trust God's plans are good for me. I've grown in empathy, obedience to God’s will, patience with my kids, skills to disciple my kids, and reflected on how my day to day life impacts my faith walk. I pray that listening will do the same for you!

The Right Way to Study the Bible with Courtney Doctor

For many years, I studied the Bible to prove myself. I gathered so much information because I thought if I knew it all, my odds of messing it all up and making God mad would be minimized. I wanted to do it all right and for a long time I thought I was doing a pretty good job. I memorized books of Bible verses, and even a whole book of the Bible. I read through the Bible every year for years, but one day God revealed to me that all those things I was doing didn't make me a better Christian. Thinking I was better could be just as much sin for me as it was for the person who didn't care about keeping God's law at all. You might think that would make me sad and upset, and yes I did cry, but more so because I realized that Jesus loved me so much he died for me. The weight of having to do it all was lifted, and I could find delight in the work he did rather than running at a frantic pace. I've had the chance to hear Courtney Doctor speak many times, and her grace-filled way of walking in faith is so inspiring to me. I can't wait to chat with her about one of our basic ways of learning more about Jesus. What does Bible study look like for you at this stage of life? Has it always looked that way, or has it had seasons where it looks more robust or more elemental? Why was it important to base our desire to study of the Bible on the truth that God loved us first? What are the ditches we can fall into if we don't ever examine the Word of God, and also if we dedicate ourselves to it but for the sake of "knowing it all." What are some unconventional ways you've studied the Bible at different seasons of your life? If someone could only take on one new practice for studying the Bible, what do you wish it would be? Confession and Building Resilience in Our Kids with Abbey Wedgeworth

Order Gently Tended and join the Bible study now! It took me a long time to realize that parenting isn't about guiding our kids perfectly with all the right answers. I would try and fail every single day. A few years in, I started to realize that what was building resilience in my kids was them watching God work on my own heart to make me more like him. Going to them and confessing when I messed up (because who were we kidding? I knew I had messed up and they knew I had messed up) was a game changer. Bringing that same heart to my marriage and the Bible studies I was a part of led to more growth than when I pretended to have it all together. I'm sure you know that going first is so, so hard. Someone I've seen do this really well is Abbey Wedgeworth. I'm looking forward to hearing from her about her journey to a soft heart that embraces Confession as a spiritual discipline that forms her family and soul. Can you tell me about a time you were trying to hold it all together, but that wasn't fooling anyone? How does the dishonesty of trying to pretend we are "doing fine" when our attitude is falling apart affect our kids? How does the way we see God influence the way we approach confession? When we hit storms, it's easy to think we hang on to our own "self-justification" by listing our extenuating circumstances. How do you interrupt that script and bring in a humble heart that leans into confession and how does that help us build resilience, and our kids build it too? What are some practical ways we can start to build these habits into our lives? We talked about "this episode" with Bob Flayhart. You can find links to Abbey Wedgeworth's books, "Help! How To Look at Clothes Biblically with Caroline Saunders

Order Gently Tended and join the Bible study now! It's so easy to start to measure our worth by what we own and how we dress rather than whose we are. I remember the first time we ever changed churches. We went from one church with a style of clothes to a different church with a drastically different type of clothes. I felt all itchy and out of place until I learned the new metrics and felt like I could fit in. I would like to say that is something that passed with childhood and adolescence, but as we record my family just moved to a new part of the city. I can't help but notice how many people in my new neighborhood wear elevated athleisure... of which I own none. When I work out, I look like a sweaty troll that escaped from a twisted fairy tale. While writing Gently Tended, I was struck by the fact that Christian simplicity isn't about owning less, or the freedom to own it all, but rather remembering the character of the one who clothes us. I've loved watching for years as Caroline takes a theme and traces it cover to cover through the Bible. She's done it with Home and Water. Now she's doing it with clothes! Have you ever had a wardrobe malfunction, or the need to find an awesome outfit that stands out to you? Why do you think clothes make us spiral into overthinking? Did you have a moment, or maybe several like that, that caused you to think about clothes in the context of a Biblical theme? Can you talk us through briefly where we see clothes and being clothed in the Bible? If we genuinely believe that we are clothed in Christ's righteousness, how does that change the way we see what we own, and how that causes us to be viewed by others? Do you have a time when you walked into a situation that should have set you on your heels, but knowing that truth gave you confidence to respond well? Guiding Kids to Faith With Love and Logic with Dr Charles Fay

Order Gently Tended and join the Bible study now! Stewarding the relationships with our kids and their faith is one of the most important tasks handed to parents. I remember the shock and overwhelm when, at 23, my newborn baby was strapped in the car seat and sent off with us home from the hospital. We didn't even have to sign for him like you would an important package. There was no 10-hour class like hunter safety, or hands-on test like the driver's test. You're just given a baby and wished "good luck." Because of that, parents are often at a loss for what to do. We turn to whatever expert our friends found helpful to know what to do with this unpredictable little person. I've found myself sliding into permissiveness or cracking down with an authoritarian framework when that wasn't working, but someone I've found to be a very helpful, centered voice is Dr. Fay. His book "Raising Emotionally Strong Kids" was so helpful to me a couple of years ago, and I'm eager to chat with him today about how we steward our kids well. In case someone isn't familiar with your work already, can you do a synopsis of your Love and Logic framework? What I admire about your encouragement is that we aren't asked to force our kids to follow a set of rules, or just let them do whatever. What boundaries do we set up to help us avoid common pitfalls as parents? I know the parents listening to this are so intentional, but also likely overwhelmed. In your years of practice, what are some lies you've noticed parents tend to believe about parenting, and by extension, stewarding their kid's behavior and faith? I think often we tie those things tightly together. I've started realizing parenting is as much about my own spiritual formation as it is about me forming my kid. You build reflection into your work. Why is that so important as a step not to skip? You say we can't respect someone we don't trust. How do we build that trust from a young age? What does it look like to have I loved your book Raising Emotionally Strong Kids and am eager to read Raising Spiritually Strong Kids. I'll link both of those in the show notes. Why is Humility so Hard? with Jen Wilkin

Order Gently Tended and join the Bible study now! During my studies this year for Gently Tended, I've realized the quality of Christian humility is elusive. We can't really "make ourselves humble." If we try to beat ourselves down, it doesn't make us more like Christ. The only way to understand humility is to see ourselves rightly in God's story. As we grow to know and love him better, we become humble because we realize how much we rely on him. My guest Jen Wilkin is the writer of theologically rich Bible studies. Last summer we chatted about a book project she was about to start working on it's just been published under the name "Dust to Dust." In it, she was studying biblical literature and the way it reveals the path to a life well lived. As I've thought about humility this year, I've kept thinking what a humbling project that would be. She's literally spent a year looking carefully at human mortality in light of God's plan and eternity. Usually, I wind up slowly, but since we did a whole episode setting up this one, I want to dive right in. Before we get going, though, can you give a brief review of the arc of Biblical literature and how it's reflected in human life? Why do you think it's important for Christians to understand and consider their mortality? What has it done in your own soul this year, spending so much time thinking about being made from dust and returning to dust? What does this human arc reveal to you about who God is? What disorder does our anti-aging culture reveal? Why do we need to think about this before we become old? How does remembering our mortality help us to live and age better? How is that connected to humility? You can find the link to Jen Wilkin's book "Dust to Dust" and her website. What I Replay in My Mind with Laura Wifler

Order Gently Tended and join the Bible study now! Meditation is the script that we play over and over inside our heads. Biblical meditation often starts with an acknowledgement of what is, grieves what should be, then moves to rejoicing that what is now isn't what will always be. Laura Wifler's poetry always leaves me with one or all three of those feelings. She has an incredible mental eye for seeing what most of us overlook, both the beauty and the brokenness. Then what her years of practice in Risen Motherhood gave her was the ability to see all those things through the lens of the gospel. I'm excited to chat with Laura today about internal dialogue, poetry, and how it ties into Biblical meditation. What have you done to train yourself to see the little things? A lot of your writing deals with joy and grief, or grief moving into promise. I'm always curious how people decide how long to sit in the lament, and when to move into rest in the promise during the messy middle. You've written about other tender things like motherhood and body image. In that it's required you to take an honest look at what you believe. Have you been able to do that internally, or have you had to trust someone wise to point those out to you? How have you replaced those lies you were believing about body image, or ultimate black-and-white thinking? \Does poetry help you as you process? What does it do for your own soul? What experiences do you have the most trouble putting into words? What do you wish with your work that more people would address in their own thought lives? What do you hope to press them to change? What's something you love so much you could do an ad for it? I'm going to link your new book of poetry, "This Side of the Sky," in my show notes. Where can people find you? Did I do Enough? with Dr. Kelly Kapic

Order Gently Tended and join the Bible study now! I had the opportunity to hear Dr. Kelly Kapic speak at a conference I was attending a couple of weeks ago. He is a professor of theological studies at Covenant College, where we were staying, and the session was titled "Have I Done Enough?" Led me down a thought bunny trail, because isn't that the question we are all asking ourselves during back-to-school season? Did we read enough hours? Did we soak in enough moments? Did I play with them enough? Have I purchased enough school supplies? I've found the weight of carrying all that is crushing and leads to self-loathing and depression rather than worship. What happens as parents when we try to be and do too much? Is being limited a sin? How do we respond internally when someone reminds us again to "savor all the moments" What about the things Christ commanded us to do? What do we do when we realize we can't be fully invested in caring for orphans, feeding all the widows, stewarding the discipleship of our kids, and going into all the world to preach and disciple? How do we wrestle with the feelings of incompetence that come when we see another parent doing something we wish we could do or wish we were good at? Challenge 6: Read in Community with Whitney Newby

This is the last challenge of the summer, and it may be one of my favorites. Along with it comes an encouragement to carry this challenge into the fall. We are commanded in the New Testament to meet with other believers because of the way it strengthens and encourages us. My favorite verse, 1 Thessalonians 5:11, tells us to “Encourage one another and build each other up.” My family has done this well through books. You can probably tell I love them a lot, but I love them even more when I get to read them with other Christians, especially mom friends. A few years ago I invited friends and strangers into my home to spend 18 months going through the book “Lifegiving Home.” Sometimes we discussed the book; other times we just shared what we were struggling with and prayed for each other. That year was one of the most spiritually formative and lifegiving phases of my life. I’ve done that again this summer for my son byinviting his friends who enjoy reading to join him at a coffee shop to read the Junior version of “Unbroken.” I hope this episode about books and reading encourages you. I’ll also link below both Whitney’s book and my book. Both would be amazing places to create if you want to do one of these groups for yourself! Challenge 5: Relationships > Stuff with Jodi Mockabee

Join the Challenge and share with a friend! My summer has looked nothing like what I expected. I had 5 days of middle school, two days at home, then 5 days at a conference. That was the expected part, what I didn’t expect was to be trusting God into buying a new home on land and nestled in the trees. All the things being placed in my hands are good things, but it’s also forced me to say, “no” to some things too. In our family we have a rule, “You can’t pick up anything, unless you put something down.” If not, then our kids end up paying the price. In this season I need the challenge of “simplicity.” It can be easy to run away with my plans. To try to buy furniture to make it cozy, or plan ahead for what I can’t know about. Just knowing this episode with Jodi was coming has been enough to slow me down and encourage me to snuggle on longer empty days, andwait to buy things after I need them not in anticipation of “maybe” needed them. God keeps replaying to my mind and heart Matthew 6:19-21 “Don’t store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven… For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. I hope this week if you’re feeling overwhelmed by having picked up too much, you’ll find a thing or two to lay down. Trusting that he’s working in those moments too. Challenge 4: Baking as Discipleship with Sally Clarkson

Join the Challenge and share with a friend! My experience with getting later into summer is that the quiet, laziness of the days has finally sunk in. The frantic activity of May has passed and the first of the summer trips are over. Our Summer Faith Challenge is a fun one this week. It’s a choose-your-own-adventure. Either invite someone over for a meal orMake cookie dough and freeze balls of it to have on hand in the freezer. Discipleship is done so well over food. As soon as I start baking my kids gather around to see what’s happening, or as soon as they smell cookies going into the oven, the smell lures them out to talk. We are called to “Go make disciples.” Jesus famously discipled in combination with food. It’s a good recipe for discipleship success! We hear stories of the feeding of five thousand, wedding feasts, and the last supper. The early church copied that, and we see in Acts 2:42&46 that “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer… Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts.” I think this interview with Sally Clarkson will inspire you in your discipleship goals! Enjoy! Challenge 3: Selfies, Swimsuits, and Self Sufficiency with Jen Wilken

Join the Challenge and share with a friend! Our Summer Faith Challenge this week is to examine the way we think about our bodies and aging. 1 Samuel 16: 7b tells us that “... the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” Summer is a time when it is easy to be fixated on how we look and be overly aware of our bodies. There are a lot of ads talking to us about being swimsuit-ready and wanting to maintain our youthful look. I was laughing to my sister-in-law this pastweekend that after my first son was born, I convinced my husband to let me buy my forever swimsuit. It was a little more expensive, but it was a one-piece with boy short legs, so that I could chase our future kids while not showing the whole world my assets. I didn’t really swim again until our third son was born, because trying to keep all the toddlers from drowning felt impossible, but when I put on that suit, I couldn’t believe how much my body had changed. In an effort to embrace this new size, I once again convinced my husband to let me buy my new “forever suit.” SoI could confidently go to the pool. But now, ironically, I’m somewhere between those two sizes. I tend to pendulum swing between pretending my body doesn’t matter at all, and overanalyzing every shift that each year brings. What if our faith changed our focus? What if the way we see life allowed our soul to become more beautiful and our faith an anchor of security as we step out into the pool with our kids or grandkids this summer? Enjoy this episode with Jen aging with grace. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Challenge 2: Use Encouraging Words with Abbey Wedgeworth

Join the Challenge and share with a friend! Our second Summer Faith Challenge is to use words that are kind, or to ask forgiveness and repair when they aren’t. I could probably use this challenge every week of the year, but I want to focus specifically on encouraging words with a kind tone this week. My mom had a verse from Eph 4:29 she would quote tous likely every day “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building othersup according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Our challenge this week is to print that verse (I’ll providea printable verse card for you in the show notes) and pin it somewhere where we will see it. Challenge your Summer Challenge Besties to use kind words this week and ask for forgiveness when your words or tone move away from that. The more we are with someone the easier it is to harm them with our words, and when we travel with people and have them with us 24/7 in cramped quarters, it becomes harder to choose to speak words of kindness over them every day. Jesus knowsthat. He knows our weakness, but promised to send his Holy Spirit to empower us, and to hear our prayers when we ask him for strength or forgiveness. I think this conversation with Abbey will remind us that while we can challenge ourselves to speak kindly, that often comes with the need to learn to ask for forgiveness and also remember that Christ loves us and is our righteousness even when we fail. Challenge 1: Faith > Anxiety with Megan Fate Marshman

Join the Challenge and share with a friend! Our first challenge for the summer is “trust.” Summer is a time that I struggle to trust, and I’ve heard it is for you too. Our schedule is off, and we have to pack and plan for trips. Everything feels a bit more out of control Often, though, we forget that and think we have to solve the world’s problems or our own for everything to work out. We spend nights lying awake, brainstorming solutions to our problems or safeguarding ourselves from pain, or trying to plan our words so we can convince others to do what we know would be right for them. Start a text thread with your “summer challenge besties” and ask them to tell you about a time in the past God relieved them of anxiety. Take those stories to encourage you this week. Then check in at the end of the week to share how you thrived or were challenged. I’ve been quoting this a lot, so people who know me are probably sick of hearing me refer to it, but CS Lewis in Screwtape Letters has a line that has become so real to me hesaid, “It’s not as important for (Satan) to convince people that God isn’t real as much as it is for them to just forget he exists at all.” Using our anxious feelings as a trigger to point us back to God allows us to take something that was meant for evil and turn it into something good that grows us closer to God. Summer Faith Challenge

Join the Challenge and share with a friend! Usually, during the summer, I take a break, but this summer, I’m curating ways that I would like for us to grow together in faith. Every episode on the Sunshine in My Nest Podcast this summer will have an email that goes with it and will be a series of relational challenges that will help you to love God and disciple your kids, grandkids, or the women in your life better. I’ll kick the episodes and emails off with an introduction and then wrap it up with a specific way for you to walk in wisdom and live in faith. I think that as you do these challenges, it will transform your family life and walk with God, but that’s just the first half! As believers, we aren’t just called to be transformed ourselves, but to “go make disciples.” I think we can make that too complicated, but as part of this challenge, I’d like you to take what you’re learning into your community. More than ever, I find we use our relational energy scrolling on social media and becoming involved in dramas that have nothing to do with us. One of the most valuable positions in thechurch right now are the community builders. The people who show up in person for the people in their lives. That doesn’t have to be complicated. Talk to another mom while poolside, send a text to a friend, or invite someone to join you through the summer. My hope is that these will grow your faith as you feel God’s encouragement and love the women in your real life. How Big Is Your View of Worship? with Tim Challlies

I grew up with attendance in a wide smattering of church denominations. It got to the point where my parents, when someone asked what denomination they identified with they would say they were "Bapa-Lutha-Terian." Even now my favorite thing is over the summer, we have a break from some of our church responsibilities, and we often choose to visit the churches of our friends around the city. It has reminded me the body of Christ isn't all eyeballs. Each cluster of believers comes to faith with unique language and strengths that encourage me as I spend time with them. Tim Challies is a pastor and author and has spent a huge chunk of time not just visiting churches in his city, but churches around the world. I can't wait to hear what he's learned from his experiences. Did you grow up with a solid home church or a varied church background? Do you have any early moments that you remember being impacted by the faith of other believers? What inspired you to start traveling to churches around the world? What have you learned from some of those experiences? What do we risk if we only look at Christianity through an Americanized lens? How does exposing ourselves to the global church strengthen believers as a whole? Why is it good for our families? What's The End Goal of Parenting? with Jennifer Pepito

It can be easy to think of education as preparation for tests and careers. But what if the bigger goal was fostering creativity and virtue in our children? No matter how you educate your kids, you as the parent are teaching them these things. The things you choose to spend time and money on show them what is most important and valuable. Today, Jennifer and I discuss people from history and what mattered most in their educational process. I hope you walk away with joy and a hope-filled perspective. In your experience, what is the impact does home have on learning? What can parents do to help foster that love for learning? What have you seen heroes of history do that made a difference in their education life? Are there words or phrases we use that work against us as we educate? How can we use heroes from the past to inspire our kids today? The Theology of Birth No One Taught Us l Annie Vanderheiden

There are many experiences in our lives as humans that transform us fully into an entirely different person. Times like our wedding, we wish we could live again. Others, perhaps like the death of a parent, no one could pay us enough to go back. These experiences can show us better who God is and cause us to love him more, or sometimes they shake our faith and cause us to doubt his care. Birth and postpartum is one of those times of life for me. I’ve talked to hundreds of moms at this point, and of all the women I’ve talked to, not one has ever said to me, “My first pregnancy, birth, and postpartum went exactly how I expected.” Today I’m talking to Annie Vanderhieden, a writer and editor at Risen Motherhood, about how the pain of postpartum showed her more clearly who Jesus is. I know you’ve said that you loved babysitting and always dreamed of being a mother. In your imagination, what did motherhood look like? What was your birth experience like? When was the moment you realized that what you pictured was going to be different from your reality? How did you find a theologically sound view of the fall helped comfort you when things didn’t go as planned? What did life with a newborn look like for you? Are there moments that stand out to you? What did God show you about Himself in those moments? How Do We Own Less and Love More? with Joshua Becker

As a young mother, someone gave me a copy of one of Joshua Becker's books, and it totally turned my world right side up. We were living in the decade where everyone was talking about minimalism and essentialism. I had thrown myself wholeheartedly into the movement, but something seemed not quite complete until I read "The More of Less." Suddenly, it all made sense. I wasn't throwing away all my stuff just because it was time to clean, and I wanted to burn the house down. I wasn't living with less just for the sake of having less; I wanted to live without distraction toward a purpose. I'm super excited to introduce you to him today. I pray that as you listen to us chat, you'll also be challenged toward a purposeful faith as well! You had a turning moment early in your family life that showed you the benefit of minimalism. Can you tell us about that? How did your personal story connect to what you saw in the Bible? It's tempting for us to want to become minimalists when we are sick of picking up our kids' stuff, but what are the spiritual benefits of living with less? It's been a while since you had that moment... how has it changed the way you live? What Really Matters at the End of the School Year? with Mandy Davis

Something I think that is important to do as we wrap up the school year and head into the summer is to assess our why. It doesn’t matter whether your kid is homeschooled, public-schooled, or private-schooled; summer is a big vibe shift. Even people who have a more traditional ebbs and flows to life sense a change in rhythms as summer approaches. I’m going to talk to former public school principal turned homeschool mom and creator behind Home Built Education Mandy Davis. We are going to answer each of these heart assessment questions for ourselves and hope that as we brainstorm, it generates intentionality in you as well. I hope that before or after every question, you will pause and answer it for yourself as well. When your kids look back at how they were raised, what do you hope they say? “When your child is an adult, and someone says, 'Wow, you were homeschooled, what was that like? What do you want them to say?'" What do you want them to say about you as the homeschool parent? What brought you the most joy, being with your kids more? What are some practical things that have shifted that you think have helped? (for me it’s been literature-based learning) As a parent, how have your kids seen you be an example of a lifelong learner?
