Soul Brew

Aidan Hunter & Stephen Doak

In late 2020 Aidan and Stephen began walking in the evenings together through their local forest park and felt their discussions were interesting, thought-provoking and made them feel healthier in both body and mind. They decided to try to record some of these chats in the hope of inspiring others to continue the conversation. They want to bring people together over a cuppa, with an aim to create a community that can share thoughts, ideas, love, compassion, and realism in a safe non-judgemental environment while discussing the meaning and purpose of life, health, and much more.

#67 - Girls Just Want to Have Fun w/ Dr. Orlagh Farmer

Why do girls drop out of sport and what can we do to keep them playing? Dr. Orlagh Farmer knows this question better than most. She's a six-time All-Ireland winner with Cork, a PE teacher, a lecturer, and the researcher behind the Gaelic4Girls programme. Her PhD looked at why girls leave sport and what clubs, coaches, and parents can do to change that. Orlagh sits down with Stephen to talk about the real barriers: lack of fun, too much pressure, body image, puberty, social media, and the powerful influence of friends. But she also brings solutions that any club can make. This is a conversation about belonging, confidence, and the life skills that sport gives us. It's for coaches, parents, teachers, and anyone who cares about keeping girls in the game. This one's for the girls. #66 - Home w/ Aidan Hunter

Aidan is home and we ask "What does home mean to you?" In this deeply personal episode, Stephen and Aidan reunite for the first time since Aidan stepped back from the show. They sit down to talk about home, what it means, where we find it, and what happens when the people who made it feel like home are no longer there. Stephen opens up about the recent passing of his mother, a woman who embodied the simple things: a good cup of tea, time with family, and slowing down. Aidan reflects on his own journey between Vienna and Donegal, the pull of two homes, and the hard work of building community in a foreign city. Together, they explore grief, belonging, and the truth that home is less about a place and more about the people who make us feel seen. This is a raw, honest, and ultimately hopeful conversation about loss, love, and what we carry with us. #65 - Ramblin' Man Pt2 w/ Will Meara

"Just because you like going for a pint doesn't mean you should own a bar." Will Meara learned that in Cambodia—the hard way. In this second part of a sprawling, unforgettable conversation, Will picks up where he left off. We go from a hostel that was full every night but losing money, to building a global empire with Bingo Loco, to a week in North Korea playing pool with drunk generals. Then right at the end he tells me about Spraoi. A 90-acre farm in West Cork, transformed into a space where people come to find their spark. This is a conversation about failure, resilience, and the through-line that connects it all: a genuine love for people and a belief that how you make them feel is the only brand that matters. #64 - Ramblin' Man w/ Will Meara

Will Meara has lived about ten lives—and he's not even 40 yet. You might know him as the co-founder of Bingo Loco, the man who turned a chaotic drinking game into a global phenomenon. But before the sold-out arenas, there was a different kind of chaos. In this first part of a sprawling, unforgettable conversation, Will sits down with his old friend Stephen to trace the arc of a life that refused to play it safe. They go back to the beginning—watching his car-salesman dad graft in Dublin, the student union days, and working the nightlife scene in Dublin thereafter. But then the story takes a turn. What followed was an 18-month journey that landed him in Pakistan with anti-Taliban vigilantes, couch-surfing in Iranian opium dens, and eventually on the front line against ISIS in Iraq. This is Part 1 of a two-part conversation about restlessness, hospitality, the stories we're told about the world, and what happens when you stop reacting to life and start living it actively. Pull up a chair. This one's a journey. If you would like to support the podcast, please Buy us a Coffee, share the episode on social media or drop us a message to purchase one of our Coffee Tumblrs. #63 - St. Brigid w/ Dr Niamh Wycherley

She’s the patron saint of poets, healers, and blacksmiths. Her feast day marks the start of spring, but is St. Brigid of Ireland a Christian saint, a pagan goddess reborn, or a powerful symbol we’ve shaped over centuries? To help us unravel this mystery, we’re joined by historian Dr. Niamh Wycherley. We’ll dig into the earliest evidence, decode the famous legends, and ask what Brigid’s complex legacy tells us about Irish spirituality—past and present. This is an exploration of how one extraordinary figure can hold so many worlds within her story. Dr Niamh Wycherley is Assistant Professor in Maynooth University. She hosts The Medieval Irish History Podcast and is the Principal Investigator of the Research project 'Power and Patronage in Medieval Ireland: Clonard from the sixth to twelfth centuries' and contributes regularly to RTÉ Brainstorm and television programmes such as the RTÉ 1 documentary Finding Brigid (with Siobhán McSweeney) and was historical consultant on RTÉ's Blindboy: the Land of Slaves and Scholars. #62 - Christmas Wrapping

Pull up a chair and pour a cup—it's time for a long-awaited catch-up. As 2025 draws to a close, Aidan in Vienna and Stephen in Carrownamaddy finally steal a moment to wrap up the year over coffee (watermelon-infused, of course). In this soulful review, they hold a mirror to their hopes from last January. They talk about the goals they nailed—like Stephen's unforgettable festival-wedding and Aidan's dedication to learning German—and the ones that got away (we're looking at you, dental floss). More than a simple review, this is a raw and moving conversation about the hard trade-offs of a big year, the complex pull of home, and how to find your rhythm again when life throws you off pace. With some big news at the end of this episdoe it's the perfect companion for your own year-end reflection. Settle in, and let's brew. #61 - The Sunday Game w/ Martin McElhinney

Ever wondered what it truly feels like to live the dream of playing in an All-Ireland Senior Football Final? This episode goes beyond the highlights with Donegal (dare I say) legend Martin McElhinney. We delve into the emotional landscape of that 2012 All Ireland win over Mayo and the 2014 final against Kerry. We talk about what it is like playing under the guidance of Jim McGuinness, the noise of walking out the Croke Park tunnel, and the feelings that surge when the final whistle blows on your childhood dream. Martin shares his story about playing in these finals and we discuss his career, his thoughts on the current team and a few segways about youth development and more. #60 - Never Enough

When is enough work on yourself enough? Is it ever enough? Do we need to constantly strive to be better and life "optimally"? They continue from their previous episode speaking about how the struggle to be idle and how they continually strive to live "Optimally" which is an unrealistic goal and how optimal lliving might be a fad that we have both fallen for. As always the lads are open and embracing their vulnerability and how they are always learning and are trying to live in a way that they are not always trying to learn. Are conclusions made? Perhaps not but plenty food for thought. #52 - Many Men

Many Men Die Younger Than Women - In fact on average, men have a shorter lifespan compared to women. Males have higher death rates than females for almost all leading causes of death and at all ages. Men’s poorer lifestyles contribute significantly to the prevalence of chronic diseases. Many Men often present to health services late, making many health issues untreatable. International Men’s Day is celebrated on November 19th every year and is a great opportunity to take part in a global conversation about manhood, masculinity and men’s issues. Aidan and Stephen discuss the themes outlined above this years theme about mens health champions, role models and more. Donate here to Aidans attempt at lifting 60,000kg this month for Movember. #51 - Samhain Tales w/ Seán Clancy

Samhain is Gaelic festival on 1 November marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the "darker half" of the year. According to Irish mythology, Samhain (like Bealtaine) was a time when the 'doorways' to the Otherworld opened, allowing supernatural beings and the souls of the dead to come into our world; while Bealtaine was a summer festival for the living, Samhain "was essentially a festival for the dead". We explore this and some spooky tales with our guest Seán Clancy who has many titles including Accredited Seanachaí (traditional Gaelic storyteller/ historian), Irish Pagan, Druid, ITGA Tour Guide, The Order of Bards, Ovates & Druids (OBOD) member, Organic Farmer, Hill of Uisneach Guide, Photographer for fun, Chartered Engineer with Westmeath Councuil and most importantly a Dad & Husband.
