Why Chasing More Never Made Me Happy

Watch the full Commitment episode on the Solved podcast: https://mrk.mn/tc7phn0t. I spent years traveling the world, dating whoever I wanted, working from a laptop anywhere on earth. It slowly made me miserable, and I want to tell you exactly why. In this one I get honest about the ADHD, the avoidant attachment, and the diminishing returns of chasing novelty on every front at once. The thing that pulled me out wasn't another adventure. It was noticing I'd rather drink beers with my old friends than raft through Indonesia. Narrowing down saved me. Why Kierkegaard Said Anxiety Is Actually Freedom

Watch the full Commitment episode on the Solved podcast: https://mrk.mn/tc7phn0t. Your anxiety might not be fear. It might be freedom. Kierkegaard popularized the word anxiety, and his definition still hits harder than anything in a modern self help book: the dizziness of too much freedom. Every option you leave open is one you feel guilty for not taking. Drew and I unpack why standing at the edge feels worse than jumping, and why committing to something is a lot like diving into a cold pool. The dread is all before the leap. Chapters Chapters 00:00:00 Introduction: Kierkegaard's Revolutionary Definition of Anxiety 00:00:51 The Cliff Metaphor: Standing on the Edge of Possibility 00:01:23 Anxiety as Spiritual Depth: The Connection Between Freedom and Potential 00:02:01 The Cold Pool Metaphor: Commitment as the Antidote to Anxiety 00:02:42 Anxiety vs Fear: Why There's No Object to Dread 00:04:13 The Digital Nomad Problem: When Optionality Becomes Torture 00:04:57 The Optionality Trap: Why More Choices Made Everything Worse 00:06:23 The Evolution of Digital Nomadism: From Radical to Fashionable to Backlash 00:07:52 Commitment as a Skill: Learning to Stick With Your Choices 00:08:35 Conclusion: Resources for Working on Commitment ⇨ Sign up for my newsletter, Your Next Breakthrough. The Philosopher Who Predicted Instagram in 1846

Watch the full Commitment episode on the Solved podcast: https://mrk.mn/tc7phn0t. A philosopher in 1846 predicted your Instagram feed. After a tabloid roasted him for months, Kierkegaard wrote some of the sharpest criticism of media ever put on paper. He named the thing that happens when everyone is connected to everyone: leveling, the quiet pressure to never stand out. Drew and I get into why the 19th century looked more like today than the 20th did, and why young people now barely dance, drink, or ask each other out. He called his shot 180 years early. Chapters Chapters 00:00:00 Introduction: Kierkegaard's Battle with the Press 00:01:02 The Personal Attacks: When Intellectual Debate Turns Ugly 00:01:52 Turning Pain into Philosophy: The Present Age 00:02:26 The Accountability Problem: Anonymous Opinions Without Consequences 00:03:09 The Phantom of Public Opinion 00:03:56 The Journalist's Trick: Manufacturing Consensus 00:04:40 The Infamous Quote: Prostitute vs Journalist 00:05:09 Leveling: How Media Destroys Individuality 00:06:27 The Commitment Problem: All Talk, No Walk 00:07:08 Social Media: Kierkegaard's Nightmare on Steroids 00:08:18 The Internet's Broken Promise 00:09:25 The Death of Dancing: Modern Examples of Leveling 00:10:26 The Global Homogenization: When Everywhere Becomes Nowhere ⇨ Sign up for my newsletter, Your Next Breakthrough. Why Nobody Feels Like a Real Adult Anymore

Watch the full Commitment episode on the Solved podcast: https://mrk.mn/tc7phn0t. Why does nobody feel like a real adult anymore? For most of history, cultures had rites of passage that moved you from one identity into the next. We deleted the ritual but kept the awkward in-between phase, and now people get stuck there into their thirties. Drew and I walk through liminality, emerging adulthood, and Zygmunt Bauman's idea that commitment itself became an economic liability. By the end you'll understand why "30 is the new 20" is less of a joke than it sounds. Chapters Chapters 00:00:00 Introduction: The Lost Rituals of Adulthood 00:00:37 The Three Stages of Rites of Passage 00:01:41 The Liminal Phase: Stuck in Between 00:02:09 Extended Adolescence: The 20-Year Teenager 00:03:09 Emerging Adulthood: A New Life Stage 00:03:52 The Numbers Don't Lie: Marriage, College, and Childbirth 00:04:42 The Economic Side: Complexity Requires Time 00:05:26 The Paradox of Choice: Too Many Life Paths 00:05:58 Liquid Modernity: When Commitment Becomes a Liability 00:07:38 The Loss of Trust and the Portfolio Career ⇨ Sign up for my newsletter, Your Next Breakthrough. How Your Brain Tricks You Into Avoiding Decisions

Watch the full Commitment episode on the Solved podcast: https://mrk.mn/tc7phn0t. Most people think they're keeping their options open. What they're actually doing is running from a decision. In this one, Drew and I break down Kierkegaard's three stages of life and a brilliant follow-up from Walter Kaufmann, who mapped the ten sneaky ways we avoid commitment. He called it decidophobia. Drew shares the "practical" career choice that was really avoidance in disguise, and we get into why every escape hatch you build is a version of what Sartre called living in bad faith. Chapters Chapters 00:00:00 Introduction: The Problem of Being Adrift 00:00:08 Kierkegaard's Three Stages of Life 00:00:45 The Religious Stage Isn't About Religion 00:01:12 Decidophobia: The Fear of Making Decisions 00:01:46 Drifting: Two Ways to Avoid Commitment 00:02:36 Marriage as an Escape from Decision-Making 00:03:16 Religion and the Outsourcing of Decisions 00:04:12 Stacking the Deck: Setting Yourself Up to Fail 00:04:39 Not Every Decision Deserves Full Commitment 00:05:21 The Power of Perceived Agency and Choice 00:06:09 Decidophobia in Disguise: A Personal Story 00:07:40 Bad Faith: Sartre's Take on Avoiding Responsibility 00:08:45 Outro: Full Episode and Resources ⇨ Sign up for my newsletter, Your Next Breakthrough. The 4 Habits Of Extremely Lucky People

Watch the full Luck episode on the Solved podcast: go.markmanson.net/h0g98i67 After a decade of research, Richard Wiseman found that lucky people share four specific habits. None of them are mystical, and every one of them can be learned. In this clip Drew and I walk through all four, and I get honest about which ones I actually live and which one took me years to figure out. Plus the true story of the networking dinner nobody wanted to go to that ended up changing our whole team. How Napoleon Manufactured His Own Luck

Watch the full Luck episode on the Solved podcast: go.markmanson.net/h0g98i67 Napoleon was the poorest, smallest, most bullied kid at his academy, and he became maybe the most statistically improbable commander in history. I read the whole biography this year and could not stop thinking about him. In this one I get into how he manufactured his own luck: obsessing over high-leverage skills before anyone else did, crossing the Alps when every strategist said it was impossible, and eating dinner with his foot soldiers. It looks like luck from the outside. It wasn't. Chapters Chapters 00:00:00 Introduction: The Bullied Boy Who Became Emperor 00:01:43 The Early Signs of Genius: Artillery and Strategic Positioning 00:02:49 The Voracious Reader: Building Compounded Knowledge 00:03:51 Revolutionary Advantage: Understanding Both Sides of History 00:04:56 Spotting High Leverage Opportunities: The Pattern of Success 00:06:24 Crossing the Alps: The Impossible Made Possible 00:08:00 Manufacturing Luck Through Earth Luck Mastery 00:08:46 The Campfire General: Building Loyalty Through Connection 00:10:38 The Statistical Impossibility: Napoleon's Battle Record 00:12:30 Are You Lucky? A lucky dentist is barely better off than an unlucky one. A lucky musician is a millionaire. Your Life Is A Game Of Poker. Here's How To Win

Watch the full Luck episode on the Solved podcast: go.markmanson.net/h0g98i67 People burn a lot of energy fighting over whether success is luck or skill. Wrong fight. In this one I break down the framework that reorganized how I think about all of it: San Sai, an ancient Chinese model that splits luck into three kinds. The luck you're born with, the environment you put yourself in, and the way you play your hand. Two of the three you can actually work on. If life is poker, this is the difference between the cards, the table, and how you play them. How Lucky Are You Really?

Watch the full Luck episode on the Solved podcast: go.markmanson.net/h0g98i67 Two babies are born on the same day, one in Norway, one in Sierra Leone, and one of them will live 21 years longer. Neither picked a thing. This is the luck everyone fixates on, and it's also the luck you're worst at interpreting. In this clip I run the actual numbers, get into the philosopher's thought experiment that reframes the whole thing (the veil of ignorance), and tell the story of a pastor in Sierra Leone who stumbled onto a $10 million diamond. Because luck is always relative. Lucky compared to what? Good luck, bad luck, who knows? Why Lucky People Find More Money

Watch the full Luck episode on the Solved podcast: go.markmanson.net/h0g98i67 Why do two people walk into the same coffee shop and one spots the cash on the floor while the other walks right past it? Richard Wiseman ran the studies, and the results are wild. Lucky people literally see more of what's in front of them. In this clip Drew and I get into how luck behaves like a skill you can train, and why we get so squirmy the second someone suggests our success came down to luck instead of genius. Myers-Briggs Is a Horoscope for Smart People

Watch the full Change episode on the Solved podcast: https://mrk.mn/change You've probably taken the Myers-Briggs test, put your type in a LinkedIn bio, or had a boss organize your team around it. In this clip, Drew and I get into why that four-letter label is closer to a horoscope than a science. I tell the real story of where MBTI came from: not a lab, but a mother-daughter pair working from a dining room table during World War II, building on Jung's ideas even though Jung himself warned against boxing people into types. We get into the numbers that should give you pause, like the fact that a third to half of people get a different result when they retake the test weeks later, and why it predicts almost none of the things the Big Five actually predicts. Then we get to the part that matters: why slapping a label on yourself isn't harmless fun. Labels become self-fulfilling, they turn into a responsibility shield, and an inaccurate one can have you fighting your own nature for years. Chapters Chapters 00:00:00 The Paradox of Self-Awareness 00:02:45 The Origins of Myers-Briggs 00:06:11 How MBTI Became a Corporate Phenomenon 00:09:34 The Scientific Problems with MBTI 00:12:15 Why We're So Drawn to Personality Tests 00:13:07 The Barnum Effect and Confirmation Bias 00:14:43 Why Inaccurate Labels Are Dangerous 00:16:43 The False Sense of Certainty 00:17:48 When Labels Can Be Useful 00:19:34 Traits vs Adaptations: The Crucial Distinction ⇨ Sign up for my newsletter, Your Next Breakthrough. The Anxious Preacher Who Invented Modern Confidence

Watch the full Confidence episode on the Solved podcast:https://mrk.mn/confidence Nearly every piece of confidence advice we have inherited traces back to one anxious 1940s preacher, Norman Vincent Peale, and his book The Power of Positive Thinking. How to Actually Change Your Life

Watch the full Change episode on the Solved podcast: https://mrk.mn/change Most people who try to change themselves are working on the wrong layer, and that's why they keep failing. In this clip, Drew and I lay out the framework that runs through the entire Change episode: the self operates on three layers at once. Your personality traits are the base, your natural set point, and they barely move. On top of that sit your adaptations, the identities and habits you build to work with your traits and your environment. And at the surface is your behavior, which you can change tomorrow. The mistake almost everyone makes comes down to two errors: treating a trait like a behavior ("I'll be an extrovert starting Monday") or treating a behavior like a trait ("I never go to the gym, I guess I'm lazy"). I get into how I built a whole "party guy" identity in college to work around being introverted, why Allport, Mischel, and even Freud were each partly right, and why real change always starts at the top, with behavior, and works its way down. Chapters Chapters 00:00:00 Introduction: The Three Layers of Self 00:00:29 Layer One: Personality Traits as Your Natural Set Point 00:00:45 Layer Two: Building Adaptations Around Your Personality 00:01:52 Layer Three: Behavior as the Expression of Identity 00:02:25 Bottom-Up vs Top-Down: Two Perspectives on Change 00:03:41 The Two Fundamental Errors of Change 00:05:35 Accepting Your Traits and Aligning Your Adaptations 00:07:26 Why Everyone Was Right: Integrating Personality Theories 00:09:17 Roadmap for Change: Which Layers Can Actually Shift 00:10:03 The One Way to Change Your Life Overnight ⇨ Sign up for my newsletter, Your Next Breakthrough.
