Zelf

Solarcast is a podcast which focuses on post-growth projects to outline paths toward futures of adaptability and mutual-aid.

Stemming from the distributed communication network of Scuttlebutt, the podcast journeys into a solarpunk future, initially by interviewing different peer-2-peer, local-first and delay tolerant networks, in short Peer-4-Peer (P4P) networks.

The Invisible Internet Project
In this interview we are joined by IDK from the Invisible Internet Project, I2P. I2P is a decentralized privacy focused and peer-to-peer network enabling anonymity online. Older than even the TOR-network, I2P does Garlic routing, in contrast to Onion routing. Willow
Known as a well kept secret and hidden pearl of the P2P scene in Europe, Aljoscha makes a rare appearance in this podcast and brings us into his mind and the theoretical computer science of P2P data structures. As someone who can relate to Lockharts Lament and in the pursuit of beautiful solutions, Aljoscha found an idea which could be improved on, and in turn presented the solution of Range Based Set Reconciliation, although he prefers a less formal description than the published paper. As one of the two main developers of Willow, Aljoscha, together with Sammy, keeps a dev-diary filled with music and illustrations. Willow is created by Sammy and Aljoscha and stems from Earthstar which in turn comes from Scuttlebutt as the late Cinnamon’s re-imagining of Dominic Tarr’s idea 🐌🌱✨

CoMapeo
Protecting indigenous digital sovereignty and planting the seed for a different relationship to technology, this episode covers the project of CoMapeo. Guided by Luandro who works at Awana Digital, and has walked many lands and spoken to communities across the world, while co-create what CoMapeo means in their contexts. Building on the protocol Hypercore, the offline-first capabilities of CoMapeo enable communities to map out their territories and fend off oil companies, preserve their cultures and spoken tongues through the sister project Terrastories and even support the data-gathering on the biological diversity of animals in remote regions such as the Meli bees project. Another sister project to CoMapeo is Āhau which supports the linage-tracking of Māori tribes in Aotearoa (New Zealand). As the largest active delay-tolerant and local-first implemented community project, CoMapeo shines brightly both in the present and as a guiding light for the future.

Hypercore in Rust
In this episode we talk to Blake who’s working on a Rust implementation of the Hypercore protocol. Hypercore (formerly known as .dat and part of the dat ecosystem ) is one of the oldest P4P networks. Blake presents two usecases for Hypercore as a protocol which have previously been under-explored but are highly promising—for RSS and for package-management—showcasing the versatility of P4P protocols and how there can be a larger ecosystem of P2P networks.
