Why Teens Become Night Owls: Puberty, Sleep & What Parents Can Do
Send us Fan Mail S6 145 - Why Teens Become Night Owls: Puberty, Sleep & What Parents Can Do Why does your teenager suddenly want to stay up late, struggle to wake up for school, and sleep until noon on weekends? It may not be laziness, poor discipline, or even insomnia. In this episode of Sleep Takeout, psychologist Dr. Daniel Baughn and sleep medicine physician Dr. Michelle Zetoony explain what happens to teen sleep during puberty, why the adolescent body clock naturally shifts later, and what parents can do to help without turning bedtime into a nightly battle. During adolescence, the brain’s circadian rhythm can shift substantially later, making teens feel alert at night and genuinely sleepy later in the morning. Unfortunately, early school schedules often work directly against that biology. And simply sending a teenager to bed earlier doesn’t necessarily solve the problem. In fact, spending long periods awake in bed can create frustration, increase sleep-related pressure, and sometimes teach the brain to associate the bed with wakefulness instead of sleep. In this episode, we cover: 🌙 Why puberty turns many teens into night owls Learn why teenagers naturally start feeling sleepy later at night and why this shift can continue into young adulthood. ⏰ Why waking teenagers for school can be so difficult Morning struggles are not always a motivation problem. Sometimes the teenager’s internal clock is simply running later than the schedule demands. 🛏️ Why forcing an earlier bedtime can backfire Going to bed before the brain is ready for sleep can mean more time lying awake, more frustration, and potentially more conditioned arousal around bedtime. ✈️ Why weekends can create “social jet lag” Sleeping dramatically later on weekends and then returning to an early Monday schedule can feel like changing time zones without ever getting on a plane. 🧠 Circadian rhythm vs. sleep pressure We explain the two major systems influencing when teenagers feel sleepy and why daytime activity, light exposure, and consistent routines matter. 😴 When teen sleep problems may not actually be insomnia A delayed body clock can sometimes look like insomnia even when the teenager sleeps relatively well once allowed to follow a later schedule. 🤝 How parents can help without creating bedtime battles Instead of trying to control sleep directly, families can work together on routines that make healthy sleep more likely. The goal is not to force sleep. It is to create the conditions that allow sleep to happen naturally. And if your teenager seems wide awake at midnight but impossible to wake at 6:30 AM, it may be worth thinking about their body clock before assuming they simply aren’t trying hard enough. 👇 Parents: what is the biggest sleep struggle in your house right now: getting your teen to bed, getting them off their phone, waking them for school, or weekend sleep-ins?
