Sharpening Your Edge

CV3

Welcome to Sharpening Your Edge — the ultimate deep dive into the world of hockey, where we go beyond the ice.
Chuck Verdolino, founder and lead instructor at CV3 Hockey Development. I played Tier 1 hockey through 18 on Long Island, competed at the USA Hockey Select 15 National Camp, captained my high school team to a New York State Championship appearance, and later served as a GM in pro hockey. Now, I’m bringing that lifetime of experience to the mic.
Erik Melanson, a recently retired Marine Corps officer. I spent the majority of my distinguished military career serving in special operations, where I developed and applied extensive leadership skills in high-stakes, high-performance environments. A lifelong hockey player who grew up on the rinks of Boston, I now bring that same discipline, resilience, and team-first mentality to the sport as a coach for the Philadelphia Little Flyers and as a player for the USA Warriors. My unique blend of elite military experience and deep hockey roots offers a rare perspective on performance, leadership, and the culture of the game.
As co-hosts with a passion for the game, we sit down and bring you candid conversations with elite coaches, performance specialists, and hockey minds at every level to dig into what truly drives development — from mindset and leadership to training, nutrition, and recovery.

The Habits of a Stanley Cup Champion: Rob Scuderi

In this episode of Sharpening Your Edge, two-time Stanley Cup Champion and NCAA National Champion Rob Scuderi joins Chuck and Erik to share the remarkable journey that took him from public skating sessions and ponds on Long Island to the NHL. Scuderi reflects on the evolution of the game, what it takes to endure the physical and mental grind of a championship run, and the habits, resilience, and mindset that helped him succeed at the highest level. He shares insights from his playing career, including the importance of role players, blocking shots, doing the nitty-gritty work, handling pressure, and understanding that every player has a role in building a winning team. Scuderi also dives into what separates an NHL defenseman from everyone else, discussing defensive awareness, staying level-headed, patience in development, and the importance of being a multi-sport athlete. As a player-turned-coach and current Defense Development Coach with the Nashville Predators, he offers a valuable perspective on youth hockey development, sports burnout, team chemistry, and the transition from player to coach. Whether you're a player, parent, or coach, this episode is packed with lessons on hockey development, mental toughness, championship culture, and why developing better people is just as important as developing better hockey players. Bio Rob Scuderi is a two-time Stanley Cup Champion, former NHL defenseman, and one of the most respected defensive specialists of his era. Drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fifth round (134th overall) of the 1998 NHL Draft, Scuderi carved out a remarkable 12-year NHL career by earning every opportunity through consistency, toughness, and an unwavering commitment to team success. He appeared in 783 regular-season NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, and Chicago Blackhawks, capturing Stanley Cups with Pittsburgh in 2009 and Los Angeles in 2012. His memorable assist on Max Talbot's Game 7 Stanley Cup-winning goal in 2009 remains one of the defining moments of his playing career. Before reaching the NHL, Scuderi starred at Boston College, where he helped lead the Eagles to the 2001 NCAA National Championship. A Hockey East All-Rookie Team selection, three-time Hockey East Champion, and member of the NCAA All-Tournament Team, he finished his collegiate career as Boston College's all-time leader in games played with 169 while recording 70 career points. In recognition of his outstanding collegiate career, he was inducted into the Boston College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2024. Known throughout his playing career as a dependable stay-at-home defenseman, Scuderi built his reputation through elite positioning, shot-blocking, penalty killing, and the little things that help teams win championships. He consistently matched up against opponents' top players and became known as one of the NHL's premier defensive defensemen. Since retiring in 2017, Scuderi has dedicated himself to developing the next generation of players. He currently serves as the Defense Development Coach for the Nashville Predators, where he works with NHL players and prospects to strengthen their defensive habits and overall game. He also coaches youth hockey with the Nassau County Lions 15U AA program on Long Island, sharing the lessons he learned from legendary coaches throughout his career while emphasizing not only skill development, but also character, patience, and helping young athletes grow into successful adults. In this episode of Sharpening Your Edge, Rob discusses the habits that defined his championship career, the transition from player to coach, what it takes to become an elite defender, and why creating better people is just as important as developing better hockey players. From Backyard Dreams to Olympic Gold & The Walter Cup: Hayley Scamurra's Championship Journey

What does it take to turn a childhood dream into Olympic gold and professional hockey history? In this episode of Sharpening Your Edge, hosts Chuck and Erik sit down with Team USA Olympian and PWHL champion Hayley Scamurra to discuss the journey that has made her one of the most accomplished players in women's hockey. Growing up on a backyard rink in Buffalo, New York, Hayley dreamed of wearing the red, white, and blue. That dream became reality with a silver medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics before reaching the pinnacle of the sport with Olympic gold at the 2026 Winter Games in Milano Cortina. She also reflects on winning three IIHF Women's World Championship gold medals, capturing the Walter Cup with the Montreal Victoire, and becoming one of the first players to help launch the PWHL before signing with the league's newest franchise in Las Vegas. Chuck and Erik dive into the sacrifices required to compete at the highest level, the resilience needed to overcome injuries and adversity, and how the culture inside a championship locker room can elevate every player. Hayley also shares behind-the-scenes stories from the Dream Gap Tour, discusses the rapid growth of women's professional hockey, and explains why mentorship and giving back to the next generation have become some of the most meaningful parts of her career. Whether you're a hockey player, coach, parent, or sports fan, this conversation is packed with lessons on perseverance, leadership, teamwork, and believing in a dream long before anyone else can see it. Bio A Buffalo, New York native, Hayley has emerged as one of the most accomplished players in women’s hockey, building a career defined by perseverance, leadership, and championship success. Inspired by countless hours spent skating on a backyard rink with her father and brothers, Hayley set her sights on becoming an Olympian at just 10 years old—a dream she fulfilled when she represented Team USA at the 2022 Winter Olympics, earning a silver medal, before reaching the pinnacle of the sport with an Olympic gold medal at the 2026 Winter Games in Milano Cortina. Along the way, she has also captured three IIHF Women’s World Championship gold medals and established herself as a key contributor on the international stage. At the collegiate level, Hayley starred at Northeastern University, where she developed into one of the nation’s premier forwards. During her four-year career, she earned Hockey East All-Rookie Team honors, multiple Hockey East All-Academic Team selections, and recognition as Hockey East’s Best Defensive Forward. Her combination of skill, hockey IQ, and two-way play helped her become one of the program’s most impactful players. Following college, she was selected 10th overall by the Buffalo Beauts in the 2016 NWHL Draft and has continued to excel throughout her professional career. Most recently, Hayley completed a historic 2025-26 season, becoming the first women’s hockey player to win both an Olympic gold medal and a Walter Cup championship in the same year as a member of the Montreal Victoire. She was originally selected by the Ottawa Charge in the inaugural PWHL Draft before helping elevate the women’s professional game through her play and leadership. This summer, she signed a three-year contract with the PWHL’s Las Vegas franchise, becoming one of the cornerstone players for the league’s newest team. Beyond her accomplishments on the ice, Hayley is passionate about growing the game for the next generation. Through clinics, mentorship programs, and her work with youth hockey organizations, she is committed to expanding opportunities for girls in hockey and ensuring young athletes have the resources and support they need to pursue their dreams. From her beginnings on a backyard rink in Western New York to Olympic glory and professional championships, Hayley Scamurra’s journey is a testament to the power of hard work, family support, and believing in a dream from an early age. Takeaways: Hayley Scamurra's unprecedented achievements include being the third U.S. Olympian to win a gold medal and a league championship within the same season. The Montreal Victoire's team culture played a pivotal role in their success, fostering an environment where every player felt valued and integrated into the community. Scamurra emphasized the importance of resilience and adaptability, particularly during a challenging season filled with injuries that tested the team's depth and commitment. The Dream Gap Tour was instrumental in showcasing women's hockey, allowing players to engage with fans and demonstrate their skills in various markets across North America. The transition to professional hockey involves significant sacrifice and dedication, as players often juggle jobs while pursuing their passion for the sport. Haley's mentorship program aims to empower young female athletes by providing guidance, support, and a community to navigate their journeys in sports. She also played a pivotal role in Northeastern's championship success, earning a spot on the Hockey East All-Tournament Team in 2025. One of the defining moments of Irving's collegiate career came during the 2025 Beanpot Championship, where she scored both Northeastern goals in a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory over Boston University. Her performance earned her Beanpot MVP honors, cementing her place among the most impactful players in the tournament's storied history. Selected 20th overall by Montreal in the 2025 PWHL Draft, Irving quickly transitioned to the professional game and helped the Victoire capture the Walter Cup during her rookie season. While adapting to the challenges of professional hockey, she has remained grounded in the mindset that fueled her journey from a young hockey enthusiast shooting pucks in her backyard to competing against the best players in the world. Known for her love of the game, humility, and commitment to continuous growth, Irving enters the next chapter of her career focused on establishing herself as an impact player, goal scorer, and leader in the PWHL while continuing to inspire the next generation of athletes. The transition from NCAA to professional hockey presents challenges, particularly regarding mental resilience and self-confidence amidst competition. Skyler's experiences in youth hockey highlight how supportive environments contribute to the development of aspiring athletes, reinforcing the necessity of genuine encouragement. Give More, Be More: Jeff Lovecchio’s Blueprint to "Be Where Your Feet Are"

We sat down with Jeff Lovecchio to discuss the mindset that has shaped both his hockey career and his life: “Give More, Be More.” From earning a spot in the Boston Bruins organization to building one of the most impactful player development programs in St. Louis, Jeff shares the lessons he’s learned through adversity, perseverance, and purpose. Jeff opens up about battling injuries and concussions during his professional playing career, the decision to continue playing overseas, and the transition into life after hockey. He explains how those experiences ultimately led him to create GMT (Give More Training) and GMA, where he has now helped more than 3,400 athletes maximize their potential both on and off the ice. A major focus of the conversation is Jeff’s powerful philosophy: “Be Where Your Feet Are.” He breaks down how staying fully present helped him navigate the highs and lows of professional hockey, grow successful businesses, and create meaningful relationships along the way. We also dive into: Why Jeff started his own training business The true meaning behind “Give More, Be More.” How presence impacts athletic development and leadership Lessons learned from professional hockey and entrepreneurship Building culture and community through player development Applying the “Be Where Your Feet Are” mindset to everyday life Whether you’re an athlete, coach, parent, or entrepreneur, this episode is packed with insight on growth, resilience, and maximizing your potential. Bio Jeff Lovecchio grew up playing hockey in St. Louis during a time when the city was not considered a serious competitor by top hockey markets. Through hard work, dedication, and self-discipline, he earned a Division I scholarship at Western Michigan University. Lovecchio notes that he achieved this despite not having the most innate ability, instead making up for a lack of natural skill with total commitment to maximizing his potential. After three years at Western Michigan, Lovecchio signed with the Boston Bruins. While he did not appear in a regular-season NHL game, he played seven pre-season games for the Bruins and was on their roster for the playoffs. He spent three years with the Bruins' AHL team before being traded to the Florida Panthers, where he played for their AHL affiliate for a season and a half. Due to sustaining multiple concussions, Lovecchio decided to move his career overseas for the sake of his longevity. Over the next six years, he played in top leagues across Italy, Norway, Austria, and Asia. This experience living in diverse cultures was instrumental to his personal development, teaching him patience, leadership, and communication skills while navigating cultural and ideological barriers. Three years into his professional playing career, Lovecchio founded an off-ice training company called RIPT Hockey, which has since transitioned into his full-time business, GMT (Give More Training). During the 2025/26 season, GMT expanded to operate training centers for five local youth organizations in St. Louis, serving over 3,400 players with a team of four coaches. As of 2026, over 34,000 people have used some form of his online training. Beyond training, Lovecchio frequently speaks to hockey families, which led to his career in public speaking for the general public, including his first keynote engagement for a nationwide company in 2025. Additionally, in 2025, he founded GMA (Give More Advising), a program for hockey players aged 14 and older; the initial spots sold out in 24 hours. Lovecchio operates under the philosophy of "Give More Be, you will Be More," and he is dedicated to helping others realize their potential. “We’re all standing at crossroads.” The question is—what path will you choose? In this episode, Kaleb Dahlgren reflects on loss, recovery, and the mindset that helped him rebuild his life. His message is simple and powerful: you can’t always control what happens—but you can control how you respond. Bio #1 Bestselling Author, Crossroads | Inspiring Community Leader | Health & Mental Wellness Advocate Dr. Kaleb Dahlgren is a widely recognized expert on resilience, leadership, and health. A former elite hockey player and survivor of the Humboldt Broncos tragedy with severe injuries, he has transformed adversity into purpose, inspiring individuals and organizations worldwide. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age four, Kaleb refused to let it define him, fueling a successful hockey career and a lifelong commitment to advocacy. As the founder of Dahlgren’s Diabeauties, he empowers young athletes with type 1 diabetes while serving as a National Ambassador for two diabetes non-profits. His impact extends beyond the diabetes community—his insights on resilience, mindset, and health have reached millions through global media, including CNN, BBC, CBC, New York Times, TSN, Maclean’s, and The Players’ Tribune. Kaleb’s memoir, Crossroads, became a #1 National Bestseller, earning praise from hockey legend Wayne Gretzky as a book that “will change your life for the better.” As an International Keynote Speaker, he has worked with industry leaders such as Google, Rogers, TD, Nestle, the NHL, and the Government of Canada, using his powerful story to inspire transformation. Earning his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in June of 2025, Kaleb is completing his residency specializing in sports with a focus on nutrition, neurology, and concussion management to help elevate and optimize high-performing individuals. His journey is a testament to grit, passion, and purpose, which most recently earned him the prestigious King Charles III’s Coronation Medal (2025). Whether mentoring, speaking, in the community, or providing care, he continues to drive positive change in the lives of others. Takeaways: Dr. Caleb Dahlgren's experience as a survivor of the Humboldt Broncos tragedy emphasizes the importance of resilience and community support in overcoming adversity. The concept of 'Crossroads' not only reflects the literal event of the crash but also symbolizes the numerous pivotal moments in life that shape our paths and choices. Dahlgren advocates for the intrinsic value of kindness and compassion in our interactions, highlighting that the impact we leave on others is what truly defines our legacy. The podcast illustrates that personal struggles, such as dealing with type 1 diabetes or recovering from trauma, can be transformed into opportunities for growth and advocacy for others facing similar challenges. A key takeaway is the idea of continuous self-improvement, encapsulated in the principle of becoming 1% better each day, which reinforces the notion that small, consistent efforts lead to significant progress over time. Dahlgren's philosophy suggests that mental fortitude and a positive mindset are essential for success, particularly in the face of life's inevitable challenges and setbacks. Confidence Comes From the Work You Put In: Insight from Elite S&C Coach Anthony Morando

The primary focus of this podcast episode is our enlightening conversation with Anthony Morando, a distinguished strength and conditioning coach renowned for his expertise in training elite athletes, particularly within the realms of hockey and collegiate sports. Throughout our dialogue, we delve into the intricacies of athletic preparation, emphasizing the significance of tailored strength and conditioning programs that cater specifically to the unique demands of hockey players. Morando elucidates the pivotal role of consistent training and the importance of developing a holistic understanding of fitness, which transcends mere physical strength to encompass overall health and well-being. We also explore common misconceptions surrounding youth training, providing valuable insights for parents and coaches alike. Ultimately, this episode serves as a profound exploration of the methodologies that underpin successful athletic development, underscoring the necessity for dedication and a strategic approach to training. If you’ve ever felt frustrated by slow progress or wondered if your effort is going unnoticed, this conversation will remind you why consistency still wins. The work matters — even when it’s quiet Bio Anthony Morando is a strength and conditioning coach and performance professional with deep experience developing high-level athletes across hockey and collegiate sports. Before moving to Grand Forks as an EXOS Performance Manager, he served as the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach at Boston University, supporting the men’s hockey and women’s golf programs from 2011–2015. Earlier in his career, he spent more than six years at Mike Boyle Strength & Conditioning, where he trained and managed NHL and other professional hockey players—while also running an annual summer pro-camp. Morando has also contributed at the professional level, spending time with the San Jose Sharks during their 2014 development camp. Anthony began his coaching career at Boston College (2006–2008) as a graduate assistant strength coach with BC Football, where he implemented training programs, supported nutrition and performance initiatives, and assisted with special teams on game days. He holds multiple industry certifications, including CSCS and CSCCa, along with RPR (Reflexive Performance Reset), FMS Level 1, TRX Level 1, EXOS Performance Specialist (XPS), and CPR/AED/First Aid. Anthony and his wife, Monique, live in Grand Forks, North Dakota, with their four children—Mickey, Sonny, Ralphe and Edi—and he lives by the principle: “Chance favors the prepared.” Behind every visible success are thousands of invisible reps. This episode pulls back the curtain on the unglamorous work that creates meaningful results — the practice sessions, the repetition, and the patience required to improve when no one is applauding. Takeaways: The significance of maintaining a consistent training regimen cannot be overstated for athletes striving for excellence. Recognizing the unique physiological differences among athletes is essential for tailoring effective training programs. An athlete's success is heavily influenced by their work ethic, accountability, and consistent effort in training. Developing a strong foundation in youth sports is critical for future athletic success and lifelong fitness habits. Practice How You Play: From pond hockey to Olympic gold with Monique Lamoureux-Morando

Behind every iconic Olympic moment are thousands of quiet, unglamorous reps. From frozen ponds in North Dakota to the Olympic podium, Monique shares a masterclass in athlete development. This episode dives into youth sports culture, multi-sport benefits, confidence under pressure, and why “betting on yourself” only works if you’ve done the work first. A must-listen for parents, coaches, and athletes who care about long-term growth—not shortcuts. Bio Monique Lamoureux-Morando is a retired American ice hockey standout best known for her clutch play on the international stage with Team USA. Raised in Grand Forks, North Dakota, in a family steeped in hockey, she developed alongside her twin sister, Jocelyne, and went on to become one of the most productive and versatile players of her era—capable of impacting games as both a forward and a defender. Her rise accelerated at Shattuck–St. Mary’s in Minnesota, where she helped lead powerhouse teams to multiple national titles while posting eye-popping point totals, and then continued at the NCAA level with the University of Minnesota before transferring to the University of North Dakota to play closer to home. Early in her college career, she piled up scoring accolades and quickly established a reputation for creativity, competitiveness, and a knack for delivering in big moments. On the world stage, Lamoureux became a fixture in the USA Hockey program, earning Olympic silver medals in 2010 and 2014 before reaching the pinnacle at the 2018 Winter Olympics—where she scored the dramatic game-tying goal in the gold-medal game, setting the stage for Team USA’s eventual victory in a shootout. She also contributed to U.S. success at top international events across multiple seasons, and she played professionally as well, including time with the Boston Blades in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League. After later competing with the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association—an organization advocating for a more equitable professional landscape—she retired from playing in 2021. Off the ice, she and her sister have continued to shape the sport and their community through their memoir Dare to Make History and the Lamoureux Foundation, which supports educational and extracurricular opportunities for kids in need, particularly in North Dakota. In addition to being a wife, and mother to three wonderful kids, she is also a realtor with The Elm Group in East Grand Forks. The conversation underscores the importance of parental education in sports, advocating for a shift from a win-at-all-costs mentality to a focus on holistic player development and enjoyment. The podcast discusses the significance of establishing a supportive community in youth sports, where the emphasis is placed on personal growth rather than just competition and accolades.
