#171 - Hot Cross - Risk Revival

This week on Riff Worship, we unpack the underground legacy of post-hardcore icons Hot Cross and the turbulent creation of their 2007 swan song, Risk Revival. In this episode, we discuss: The band’s roots in post-hardcore and screamo heavyweights Saetia, You and I, and Neil Perry. Their essential catalog, including defining splits with Light the Fuse and Run, Lickgoldensky, and The Holy Shroud. The decision to scrap the album and re-record it from scratch with former guitarist Josh Jakubowski for Equal Vision Records. How exhaustion, label pressures, and shifting personal lives led to the band's indefinite hiatus in 2007. Breaking down the razor-sharp twin-guitar textures, aggressive delivery, and unsparing intensity that set Hot Cross apart from their contemporaries! #170 - When Billy Joel Went Heavy Metal: The Story of Attila (1970)

Long before the ballads and sold-out stadiums, a twenty-year-old Billy Joel ditched classical piano, maxed out a Hammond B-3 organ through a wall of Marshall stacks, and set out to melt faces. In this episode of Riff Worship, we explore the strange, short-lived history of Attila: the legendary proto-metal duo Joel formed with drummer Jon Small. Join us as we trace their evolution from The Lost Souls and The Hassles straight into the meat-locker photoshoots, the catastrophic reception of their 1970 Epic Records debut, and how it ultimately paved the way for a prolific solo career! #168 - Rippikoulu - Musta Seremonia w/ Ukko's Hammer

Special guest Zach Reini (Ukko’s Hammer) returns to the Riff Worship Podcast to help us unpack the legacy of Finnish death-doom trailblazers Rippikoulu and their monumental 1993 demo, Musta seremonia! In this episode, we’ll discuss: Rippikoulu’s evolution from their chaotic hardcore punk origins in Valkeakoski to becoming architects of crushing, atmospheric death metal. Revisiting their 1992 debut, Mutaation aiheuttama sisäinen mätäneminen and tracing their early foray into gore-obsessed heaviness. How vocalist Anssi Kartela shifted the band's lyrical focus toward poetic reflections on life and sorrow, establishing Rippikoulu as the first death metal group to perform entirely in Finnish. A detailed look into the recording process and the impossibly heavy, downtuned legacy of Musta seremonia. The tragic passing of founding guitarist Marko Henriksson, the band's resulting hiatus, and their unexpected resurrection with the 2014 Ulvaja EP. Zach breaks down the blistering, riff-heavy metallic hardcore of Ukko’s Hammer’s Demo II, detailing how Finnish folklore, language, and underground music directly shape his artistic approach. #167 - Hear 'N Aid - Stars

In the mid-1980s, global charity supergroups like Band Aid and U.S.A. for Africa dominated international headlines, raising tens of millions of dollars to combat severe famine in Ethiopia. Yet, despite heavy metal’s massive commercial dominance, hard rock and metal musicians were noticeably excluded from pop-centric relief efforts. In this episode of Riff Worship, we break down how Dio guitarist Vivian Campbell, bassist Jimmy Bain, and legendary frontman Ronnie James Dio decided to take action, recruiting over 40 hard rock and metal icons to create their own charitable anthem: "Stars" under the collective name Hear 'n Aid. From the geopolitics and internal conflicts surrounding the 1983–1985 Ethiopian famine to the behind-the-scenes madness at Hollywood's A&M Studios, we explore the full story behind metal's most ambitious collaboration. In this episode, we'll discuss: The Ethiopian Famine: The political, economic, and military factors under Mengistu Haile Mariam's Derg regime that compounded the crisis. Pop Philanthropy vs. Metal Stigma: How media controversy, PMRC hearings, and "Satanic Panic" left metal out of Band Aid and Live Aid. The Origin of Hear 'n Aid: A chance radio interview at LA’s KLOS that sparked Vivian Campbell and Jimmy Bain to launch the project with Ronnie James Dio. The All-Star "Stars" Recording Sessions: Highlights from May 1985 featuring members of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Mötley Crüe, Queensrÿche, Dokken, Twisted Sister, W.A.S.P., Blue Öyster Cult, and an in-character appearance by Spinal Tap. #166 - The Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine

This week on Riff Worship, we dive into the chaotic evolution of mathcore pioneers The Dillinger Escape Plan and the transformative journey behind their sophomore album, Miss Machine. Formed in Morris Plains, New Jersey, in 1997 from the ashes of the short-lived hardcore band Arcane, Dillinger immediately set out to break the boundaries of heavy music. By fusing free jazz, progressive metal, and new-school hardcore, they built a legendary reputation on fractured song structures and notoriously unhinged live shows. After releasing their explosive EP Under the Running Board and their landmark 1999 debut Calculating Infinity, the group reached a major crossroads. Following the departure of original vocalist Dimitri Minakakis, the band brought on frontman Greg Puciato and bassist Liam Wilson to kickstart a new era. Refusing to simply record Calculating Infinity Part 2, they spent years meticulously balancing their signature technicality with newfound melody, electronic textures, and structured songwriting. From recording in blocks with long-time producer Steve Evetts to navigating depleted budgets, financial gambles, and grueling tour cycles (including near-arrests on Warped Tour and hostile crowds on Gigantour), this episode uncovers the full story behind the creation of Miss Machine! In this episode, we’ll cover: Arcane’s transition into The Dillinger Escape Plan and their formative work at Trax East with producer Steve Evetts. Overcoming devastating accidents, lineup changes, and trading away publishing rights to finish their debut album. How an open audition tape and a collaboration with Mike Patton on Irony Is a Dead Scene set a new standard, bringing Greg Puciato into the fold. The four-year writing process for Miss Machine, guerrilla studios, Pro Tools tracking, and deliberate stylistic risks on tracks like “Panasonic Youth,” “Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants,” and “Unretrofied.” Surviving brutal injuries on the road, charting on the Billboard 200, and cementing their status as extreme music innovators! #165 - Kylesa - Static Tensions

This week on Riff Worship, we dive deep into the making, history, and sonic evolution of Kylesa’s seminal 2009 masterpiece, Static Tensions! From their roots in Savannah’s pioneering crust-punk band Damad to their rise as titans of psychedelic sludge, Kylesa's story is defined by resilience, reinvention, and sheer heaviness. In this episode, we explore: The early days of co-founders Phillip Cope and Laura Pleasants, navigating the tragic loss of founding bassist Brian Duke, and how their DIY origins built their signature sound. How Carl McGinley and Eric Hernandez unlocked Kylesa’s legendary double-drum assault—plus the hard-panned recording magic crafted at Jam Room Studios. Rehearsing under The Jinx (and drawing noise complaints from Paula Deen’s restaurant), capturing a real Southern rainstorm for "Nature's Predators," and the surprising tonal influence of The Cult's Love. The story behind the iconic artwork hand-painted by Baroness’s John Dyer Baizley and session bass work from Javier Villegas (Born Against, Cattle Press). #164 - Rush - Hemispheres

This week on Riff Worship, we dive into Rush’s 1978 conceptual titan, Hemispheres! Following the grueling tour cycle for A Farewell to Kings, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart headed to Rockfield Studios in Wales with producer Terry Brown to test their limits and record one of the most complex and ambitious albums of their career. We break down Rush’s origins in Willowdale, Ontario, the transition from early hard rock to high-concept progressive rock, and the grueling, round-the-clock recording sessions that pushed the band to the edge. We’ll examine Side A’s 18-minute epic, “Cygnus X-1 (Book II: Hemispheres),” analyzing its psychological battle between Apollo and Dionysus, alongside Side B standouts “Circumstances,” “The Trees,” and the legendary 12-part instrumental “La Villa Strangiato (An Exercise in Self-Indulgence).” Join us as we discuss why Hemispheres marked both the peak and the end of Rush’s pure, side-long prog era! #163 - Mortal Decay - Forensic w/ Garry Brents (Sallow Moth) & Joe Gordon

This week on Riff Worship, we’re joined by prolific multi-instrumentalist Garry Brents (Sallow Moth) and guitarist Joe Gordon (Mortal Decay) for a deep dive into Mortal Decay’s landmark 2002 sophomore album, Forensic! Together, we trace Mortal Decay’s evolution—from their early 1990s origins as Necropolis and Macabre to underground demo staples like Grisly Aftermath (1993) and Brutalizing Creations (1995). We break down the making of their classic debut, Sickening Erotic Fanaticism (1997), and analyze why their 2002 Unique Leader Records release, Forensic, remains a high-water mark for progressive brutal death metal. Plus, Garry Brents gives us an inside look at the upcoming Sallow Moth record, Hydrophilous Brood (out July 24th via Willowtip Records). We discuss collaborating with new drummer Allen Gingerich, unpack the gear behind the Sallow Moth tone, and explore how Mortal Decay’s brutal death metal legacy directly influenced his songwriting! #162 - Trap Them - Seizures In Barren Praise w/ Clint Gee (Smearing)

This week on Riff Worship, we dive headfirst into one of the 21st century's most visceral extreme music masterpieces: Trap Them’s 2008 sophomore album, Seizures in Barren Praise. Joining us to dissect the record's enduring legacy is Clint Gee, vocalist of Seattle grindcore outfit Smearing! We’ll take a look into the blueprint of the record, exploring how the band seamlessly fused hardcore punk velocity with the legendary Swedish Boss HM-2 buzzsaw guitar tone. From its non-linear track listing to the cryptic lore of the fictional town of Barren Praise, we establish exactly why this album remains a high-water mark in aggressive music. In this episode, we’ll discuss: An in-depth look at the album's creation at GodCity Studios with producer Kurt Ballou, highlighting the evolution from their debut full-length Sleepwell Deconstructor. Unpacking vocalist Ryan McKenney’s unique, paragraph-style lyrical concept—treating the written word as a separate art medium from the music—and how the stark cinematic style of director Dario Argento influenced his approach. Analyzing the specific gear behind the record's devastating riffs, including the Ampeg V4 amp head and the finely tuned HM-2 pedal setup. Discussing the dark, iconic cover art crafted by Deathwish Inc. co-founder and Converge frontman Jacob Bannon. #161 - Thergothon - Stream from the Heavens

This week on Riff Worship, we descend into the slowest, darkest, and heaviest corner of extreme music history to explore the birth of Funeral Doom through Thergothon’s 1994 cult classic, Stream from the Heavens! Before disbanding in 1993 and leaving the metal world behind, a group of Finnish teenagers completely rewrote the rulebook on heavy music. Fed up with the oversaturated early-'90s death metal scene, the Kaarina-based trio stripped away all speed and aggression to craft something entirely immersive, bleak, and atmospheric. Heavily influenced by the cosmic horror of H.P. Lovecraft and a mixture of non-metal sounds—ranging from Dead Can Dance and Joy Division to dark ambient and goth rock—Thergothon channeled their angst into a frozen, monolithic vacuum of pure negative emotion. Join us as we dissect the band's brief but legendary three-year history, trace the origins of Obscure Plasma Records and Avantgarde Music, and discover how a single, 40-minute album paved the way for bands like Skepticism, Evoken, and Mournful Congregation! The disastrous, underfunded 1995 tour that tore the band apart just three months before their debut album hit shelves. #159 - His Hero Is Gone - Monuments to Thieves

This week on Riff Worship, we explore the brief yet prolific history of His Hero Is Gone and their landmark 1997 album, Monuments to Thieves! Active only between 1995 and 1999, the legendary Memphis, Tennessee crust punk band left their mark on underground music forever. By blending punishing, heavy metal-inspired hardcore punk with a fiercely independent approach, they created a blueprint that still resonates today. We trace their journey from working at a local donut shop to joining the legendary roster of Prank Records and laying the foundations for modern aggressive music. This week we’ll discuss: How an isolated, conservative Southern city fostered a tight-knit DIY community and fueled the band’s dark, aggressive sound. A deep dive into the systemic and historical themes of Monuments to Thieves, including how the stark reality of Memphis' former Auction Avenue inspired the album’s title and artwork. A look at Polymorph Studio in Oakland, California, their collaborations with producer Dan Rathbun, and the unique gear behind their massive, crushing tone. How the band navigated grueling tours across North America, Europe, and Japan, their abrupt final hometown show, and their eventual relocation to Portland, Oregon to form the iconic hardcore band Tragedy. #158 - Autopsy - Severed Survival

In the late 1980s, the San Francisco Bay Area was the undisputed global epicenter of thrash metal. But deep within the underground, a new generation of metalheads were brewing something far more extreme. In this episode of Riff Worship, we are diving headfirst into the blood, guts, and history behind one of death metal’s foundational releases: Autopsy’s 1989 debut album, Severed Survival! Join us this week as we break down: How a teenage Chris Reifert crossed paths with Chuck Schuldiner to help create Death's massively influential debut, Scream Bloody Gore, before forming Autopsy. How half the budget for Severed Survival “went up in smoke,” leaving the band just a few days to record with producer John Marshall (Blind Illusion, Metal Church) at Starlight Sound. How Sadus bassist Steve Di Giorgio stepped in at the last minute to deliver the album's devastating, pummeling bass lines. The direct horror influences behind the tracks, including Stephen King's short story Survivor Type, Tim Ritter's Truth or Dare?, and George A. Romero’s Creepshow. The story behind Kent Mathieu’s original Hellraiser-inspired cover art and Kev Walker’s “censored” alternate zombie surgical scene. How Jeff Walker of Carcass helped secure Autopsy a home on Peaceville Records, inadvertently paving the way for legendary labelmates like Paradise Lost, Darkthrone, and At the Gates. From the unrelenting brutality of “Charred Remains” to the sludgy, doom-inspired riffs of “Embalmed,” join us as we celebrate the raw, unfiltered madness that helped kickstart the genre! #157 - Dragged Into Sunlight - Hatred for Mankind

What does it take to create one of the most abrasive, unsettling metal records of the 21st century? In this episode of Riff Worship, we dive into the shadows to dissect the terrifying sonic legacy of the UK’s most elusive extreme music collective: Dragged Into Sunlight. Formed in 2006 by a group of anonymous DIY veterans, Dragged Into Sunlight have spent the last two decades weaponizing a volatile and uncompromising blend of sludge, death metal, black metal, and noise. Creating exclusively for themselves, the band permanently scarred the extreme music landscape with their 2009 landmark debut, Hatred for Mankind. This week we’ll discuss: Dragged Into Sunlight’s mysterious origins and their experimental, 19-minute long collaborative assault with Liverpool noise artist Kas Mana, Terminal Aggressor. The grueling, sleepless recording sessions of their debut album and the monolithic production made possible by legendary engineers Tom Dring (Corrupt Moral Altar) and Billy Anderson (Eyehategod, Melvins, Neurosis). Honoring the visceral, iconic, hand-drawn cover artwork by the late, brilliant Justin Bartlett. The band’s infatuation with true crime, the cold reality behind their notorious serial killer samples, and the first-hand professional insight of working inside a Texas Death Row facility. From the pummeling riffs of ‘Boiled Angel’ and ‘To Hieron’ to the horrific ambience of ‘Totem of Skulls’—leave the hallway light on and join us as we celebrate a modern masterpiece of misery. #154 - Gorguts - Obscura

This week on Riff Worship, we dive deep into the technical and spiritual labyrinth of Gorguts’ 1998 masterpiece, Obscura! Often hailed as one of the most innovative death metal albums of all time, Obscura was a radical departure that redefined the genre's boundaries. We trace the band’s journey from their 1989 formation in Sherbrooke, Quebec, through their early days with Roadrunner Records and legendary producer Scott Burns. We’ll explore how being dropped by their label and a four-year hiatus led to a period of intense experimentation and fine-tuning. In this episode, we’ll also discuss: How gutiarist/vocalist Luc Lemay’s conservatory education in violin and composition influenced the architecture of Gorguts’ songwriting. The critical role of late guitarist Steeve Hurdle in pushing the band’s sonic textures and thematic depth. Reconnecting with engineer Pierre Rémillard (Cryptopsy, Kataklysm, Voivod) at Studio Victor to capture the album’s raw, natural sound!
