Rereading the Revolution

Kellie and Daphne

Whether it was a reaction to the politics of the time or the rapidly approaching end date of the Mayan calendar, the pop-cultural landscape of the early 2010s can be best remembered for one thing: dystopian literature. Join plucky young heroines and podcast hosts Daphne and Kellie as they dive into all of your favorite young adult novels and series from this era as we reread the revolution. We lived through it once and are back to recap, review, and discuss all the best and worst that the world-shifting genre of YA fiction has to offer–the sci-fi, the fantasy, and the supernatural–at least until our society crumbles and we have to survive a brave new world.

Divergent Revisited | "The D-Word"
“I feel like I could probably go on a zip line somewhere else.” You read that right. We read Divergent...again. In anticipation of the release of Veronica Roth's new reimagining of the Divergent series, The Sixth Faction, we're going back to where it all started both for her and for us. Daphne, Kellie, and special guest Amber (@seekingdystopia) give the book a more thorough recap, share some new analyses, and posit lots of theories for the new book. We made it to the end of the first half of The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, one of our most ambitious undertakings yet. Daphne and Kellie answer all of your burning questions in this City of Glass recap, ship our favorite couples, see a tiny bit of battle, and finally get to the bottom of who is related to whom. Gone Pt. 2 | "Whip Arm"
"It has kind of changed my life.." Because one episode was not enough to cover this behemoth of a children's novel, we're back to recap the second half of Michael Grant's Gone (2008). We hope the first half wasn't too weird for you, because we're just getting started with this sci-fi tale described by so many critics as Lord of the Flies meets Stephen King...but with superpowers. The critics didn't even mention the talking wolves or The Darkness. Can you imagine where the plot will go in the next five books of this series? We try to do just that in this episode. City of Glass Pt. 1 | "My Sister, My Blood" (SNEAK PEEK)
UNLOCK THE FULL EPISODE BY SUBSCRIBING TO OUR PATREON AT PATREON.COM/REREADINGTHEREVOLUTION "Clary, as usual, runs away crying." We’re continuing to tear through The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, and City of Glass (2009) is too monumental to contain to one episode. We take on the first half of the epic finale (sort of), visiting Idris for the first time, navigating a series of complicated relationships, being terrified by Valentine's increasing evil powers, and making predictions about the book's ending. Hilarity ensues. Follow us on social media @rereadingtherevolution for updates and bonus content! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Gone Pt. 1 | "What Is Going On?"
"This is like, the least predictable book I’ve ever read in my life." An instant classic is incoming, because we're tackling Michael Grant's Gone (2008), one of the silliest and strangest books we've ever read. It's too much for one episode, so we broke this one into two mind-boggling parts. Kellie and Daphne discuss Grant's checkered legacy, our listeners' memories of this series, and of course, everything that goes down in the FAYZ. It's one of the most fun times we've ever had while podcasting. Fallen | "Also, I'm Immortal"
"It’s textbook Rereading the Revolution." Our listeners have been clamoring for us to read Fallen (Lauren Kate, 2009) since our infamous Hush, Hush episode came out. Daphne and Kellie are joined by special guest Thya Leger to take on more fallen angels posing as high schoolers and bravely ask the question of what's worse--the impending Biblical apocalypse or getting meatloaf in smashed your hair as a vegetarian? Paper Towns | "I’m a Girl and I’m Not Okay"
“He really John Greened in this one." The time has come for another John Green episode, and this time our Patreon subscribers voted for Paper Towns (2008)! This is a book whose cultural significance is based more on the kind of story that it became a symbol of rather than the plot itself. Kellie and Daphne unpack the nuances and accuracy of the "manic pixie dream girl" label for Margo, along with road trips, discussions about metaphors, quirky character traits, and nerds getting kissed by cool girls. I mean, it's first-era John Green. You all know what to expect by now! CW: This episode contains multiple mentions of suicide. The Giver Movie | "It's Not Giving" (Sneak Peek)
UNLOCK THE FULL EPISODE BY SUBSCRIBING TO OUR PATREON AT PATREON.COM/REREADINGTHEREVOLUTION "If you're going to destroy my book, at least put Meryl Streep in it." It was another very close poll for our movie bonus episode this month, but the 2014 cinematic classic The Giver took the crown. It also took 97 minutes of our lives that we can never get back. Kellie and Daphne discuss the film's failure to launch, bizarre choices in adaptation, the confusing creative choices made to fit this into the 2010s YA dystopian film boom, the stock footage, and of course, the Taylor Swift of it all. Cinder | "Chekov’s Foot"
"There ain’t no pumpkin carriage." Of all the books left on our list, Cinder by Marissa Meyer (2012) was by far the most requested by listeners. We dive into the fantastical, dystopian world of the Lunar Chronicles with its first installment, a Cinderella retelling with a sci-fi twist. This book has everything: cyborgs, androids, fairytale romance, a wicked stepmother, the plague, classic twists, heartbreaking turns of events, a colony of people on the moon, and lil diva foot come off. We hope it was worth the wait! Book trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXrMAFGWyuE Note: Cinder’s surname in the book is Linh with an H, which is sometimes a surname but much more common as a first name in Vietnam. We Did Not Survive Tyra Banks’ Modelland (Sneak Peek)
UNLOCK THE FULL EPISODE BY SUBSCRIBING TO OUR PATREON AT PATREON.COM/REREADINGTHEREVOLUTION Tyra Banks' 2011 epic Modelland is taking the internet by storm, so we're here to tell you everything you need to know. We may be recapping the recaps, but it's still a seriously long story. This Patreon-exclusive special episode has everything: a recap, reality TV discussion, the bumpy history of Modelland, and a phone call to Tyra gone wrong (it went SO much longer in real life, you have no idea). Shadow and Bone | "Chosen One of Sorts"
"The Darkling is written, like, really hotly." Rereading the Revolution has entered the Grishaverse. We finally read Leigh Bardugo's Shadow and Bone (2012)! Kellie and Daphne recap the tsarpunk fantasy novel that spawned some of the most beloved YA books of all time, a Netflix show, and a ship that's almost as diabolical as its name. The Crown | "Reverse Rose Ceremony" (Sneak Peek)
UNLOCK THE FULL EPISODE BY SUBSCRIBING TO OUR PATREON AT PATREON.COM/REREADINGTHEREVOLUTION "She did a little bit of writing." It's the end of an era, both for us and the people of Illéa. The patrons voted for us to read a Selection sequel for the final time (unless Kiera Cass decides to write more...). Book 5 in the series, The Crown, follows the second half of Princess Eadlyn's Selection. Will she bring democracy to her country? Will she find love with one of her suitors? Will this book perhaps be surprisingly appropriate for Pride Month? Follow us on social media @rereadingtherevolution for updates and bonus content! Hosted on Acast. They Both Die at the End | "YOLO Swag"
"The power of Malec." Happy Pride Month! This year, our Patrons chose to celebrate by reading They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera (2017). If you were on BookTok in 2020, you're probably familiar with this speculative fiction story of two boys who receive a call from Death-Cast notifying them that they have less than 24 hours to live. We follow Mateo and Rufus through September 5, 2017, which was a great day...for being sad. Along with a recap, we talk about Silvera's nontraditional journey to authorship, his very familiar inspirations, and the television adaptation. Give us Bad Bunny as Howie Maldonado, Netflix, PLEASE! I Am Number Four | "Evil Man Vibes"
"I believe that you are an alien and also I love you." We had our Patrons vote on a selection of our most-requested dystopian and sci-fi books, and I Am Number Four (2010) by Pittacus Lore (allegedly...) won by a landslide. It's your typical fish-out-of-water story about the new boy in town trying his best to fit in and survive the semester with the help of the prettiest girl in school, an oddball best friend, and an unusually smart dog. But this teenager has a big secret...he's an alien. As it turns out, John wasn't the only one with something to hide. Follow us on social media @rereadingtherevolution for updates and bonus content! UNLOCK THE FULL EPISODE BY SUBSCRIBING TO OUR PATREON AT PATREON.COM/REREADINGTHEREVOLUTION "Those two henchmen had more chemistry between them than any other characters." Many of very same people who anxiously awaited this movie in 2013 have anxiously awaited this episode thirteen years later. Hopefully that's the only thing they have in common. We're joined once again by Mara and Katie to discuss the City of Bones film adaptation. We'll cover the cast (in extreme details), the critical response, and the film's legacy among fans. New Moon Pt. 2 | "We Are All Team Mike"
"One thing about our Bella is that she loves to give up." Kellie, Daphne, and special guest Hannah Lisa Lohr are back with the second half (some would even say the exciting half) of Stephenie Meyer's New Moon (2009)! We pick up where we left off to follow Bella as she learns Jacob’s secret, engages in some more dangerous recreational activities, and makes some new friends on her big trip to Italy. Will Edward and Bella be reunited? Plus, we discuss the real Quileute Tribe's history and culture in more detail. New Moon Pt. 1 | "Bring Back My Cullens"
“Stephenie Meyer almost never hits for me. But when she does hit, it’s…like transcendental.” We’ve made you wait long enough for us to read New Moon (2009), hopefully we made it worthwhile by coming back with two episodes on the second book in the Twilight series.
