How God Works in Men's Hearts
Deep Dive into Christian Theology by Millard J. Erickson - How God Works in Men's Hearts Human nature is held captive by sin, acting willingly yet out of necessity under Satan's bondage. Divine providence governs human actions directly rather than operating merely through passive permission or simple foreknowledge. In any single historical event, God, Satan, and human agents can all be active simultaneously. In the calamity of Job, for instance, God aimed to test His servant's patience, Satan sought to drive Job to despair, and the Chaldeans acted out of illegal greed. Although Satan and wicked men act from depraved motives, God directs the ultimate outcome according to His righteous goals, employing even evil acts as instruments of His sovereign judgment. Scripture demonstrates that God hardens and blinds the impious by withdrawing His Holy Spirit, leaving them in spiritual darkness and handing them over to Satan. This hardening is an active divine judgment that inclines obstinate hearts to fulfill specific divine plans, as seen in the obstinacy of King Sihon and Pharaoh. Beyond spiritual matters, divine providence constantly overrules human wills in mundane, external affairs. God inclines human minds toward favor, instills dread, softens hostile intentions, and guides everyday choices toward His intended ends. Even royal wills, which hold supreme earthly authority, are turned by God's sovereign hand like streams of water. Human free choice must not be evaluated by outward success or the physical ability to execute decisions despite external obstacles. Rather, genuine free will requires an unconstrained judgment and inclination operating completely independent of divine control. Daily human experience proves that understanding, practical wisdom, and courage fail or succeed according to God's special grace rather than autonomous human power. Furthermore, even when men commit evil acts, Satan and sinners merely provide service while the power of execution remains with God. While human sin and wickedness originate entirely from man's own corrupt nature, God's supreme authority governs all human choices to accomplish His righteous decrees.
