PATREON PREVIEW: Home On The Range (2004)

This is a preview of a premium episode from our Patreon feed, Paid Costly For Me! Head over to Patreon.com/PodCastyForMe to hear more for just $5 a month. Hey check it out, it's the movie several people thought we were covering when we did OPEN RANGE! But instead of Costner and Duvall making a stand against cattle barons, it's Roseanne and Judi Dench and Jennifer Tilly as animated cows...taking a stand against a cattle baron! We look at yet another animated film for children (always goes well) and interrogate the idea that it "killed" hand-drawn animation at Disney. Plus, how can one even say which Disney movies are "the good ones," anyway? (Ian feels he can, easily.) Wacky ep, we hope you enjoy! As always, thank you to Jetski for our theme music and Jeremy Allison for our artwork. Produced by Ian Rhine & Jake Serwin. Additional production by Ryan Torgeson.

    Soderbergh Ep. 41: Full Circle/Command Z (2023)

They say Soderbergh's prolific, listener, but did you realize he released TWO television shows in the same WEEK in 2023? OK, sure, one of them is more like a series of webisodes that add up to about 90 minutes. But a couple of them have Liev Schreiber! He's a real guy! We did our due diligence and watched both FULL CIRCLE, Sodey and Ed Solomon's hyperlink TRAFFIC-meets-HIGH AND LOW miniseries, and COMMAND Z, his weird self-hosted miniseries about preventing the apocalypse through incremental change. It's all pretty standard stuff for us: Guyanese diaspora gangs, the correct left position on nuclear energy, arguing about whether a joke is funny. Check it out! The "chicos" sit down fresh from their travels in the Yucatán to talk Mel Gibson's Mayan language survival epic APOCALYPTO, widely held up as proof that he isn't just an insane racist weirdo. You're never going to believe this...we found some Historical Context. Apologies in advance if you're a big 'PTO fan, but we suspect you may not have rewatched it in a while. Plus, some chat about our experiences in Celestún, Mérida, cenotes - damn, is there any experience these guys won't "Mayan" for content?! Soderbergh Ep. 40: Magic Mike's Last Dance (2023) with Aaron & Carlee from Hit Factory

What if you made a movie that was really successful and then your friend directed a sequel people liked even better and THEN the star turned it into a live show with his name on it? You'd want to...let's see here...make a movie sort of imagining what if the character was actually the one who made the live show? Sure, why not! One thing's for sure, though - it better have Salma Hayek in it playing a rich woman named "Maxandra." We bid a fond "cheerio" to male entertainer Mike Lane in MAGIC MIKE'S LAST DANCE, Steven Soderbergh's conclusion to his unexpected trilogy, and we're joined by our very smart friends Aaron and Carlee from Hit Factory! As always with these two, our conversational cup runneth over with discussions of eroticism (and its absence), life after sex work, class, and ottoman humping. Terrific ep, we hope you enjoy! This is a preview of a premium episode from our Patreon feed, Paid Costly For Me! Head over to Patreon.com/PodCastyForMe to hear more for just $5 a month. Wait a minute...that's not ZARDOZ! Our friend and comrade Yui returns to discuss a different movie from the one we talked about last time they were on: Guy Ritchie's 2015 film adaptation of THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., which emerged from the wreckage of Steven Soderbergh and Scott Z. Burns's abruptly canceled version. Why does Yui want to talk about this film? What does it (and its source material) have to say about geopolitics/Hollywood & Soderbergh's view of same? How tall is everyone in the cast? We answer these and many other questions within - check it out! Get your spooky old-time mask on, everybody: it's the NO SUDDEN MOVE episode. We're talking Soderbergh's 2021 HBO Max crime thriller and all things 1954 Detroit, Black Bottom, carburetors, becoming aware of your position as a historical actor, Bill Duke, Bill & Ted (different Bill), anamorphic lenses, apologizing while hitting your boss in the face, money flowing uphill, and lots more. This is a preview of a premium episode from our Patreon feed, Paid Costly For Me! Head over to Patreon.com/PodCastyForMe to hear more for just $5 a month. How do you begin to talk about SUBURBICON, the 2017 film George Clooney made by hacking together an unmade Coen brothers crime script with one of his own about a true story of racial violence in the suburbs? By hacking together two incredible podcasts tangentially related to the subject, that's how! We got together with our good friends Jordan Fish and Ray Tintori from the To The White Sea podcast for some in-depth script analysis, live scene work, and a thorough postmortem of the Clooney film to figure out what even happened here. It's gotta be the most anyone has talked about this movie in 9 years, and it was a lot of fun - we hope you enjoy! UNLOCKED: Moneyball (2011)

This is an unlocked episode from our Patreon feed, Paid Costly For Me! Head over to Patreon.com/PodCastyForMe to hear more for just $5 a month. Most movies weren't directed by Steven Soderbergh, but few were as notably not directed by Steven Soderbergh as this one: MONEYBALL, the true story of the 2002 Oakland Athletics' revolutionary sabermetrics-based hiring strategy, was 5 days from shooting when Sony pulled the plug on Soderbergh's version. After a rewrite by Aaron Sorkin and a few cast change-ups, a slicker, Fincher-lite version directed by Bennett Miller made it to theaters, and we're talking about the whole deal. This ep has it all, quite frankly: in-depth script revision analysis, baseball talk, sports politics, and a long conversation about how statistics and "disruption" inform the world. It turns out everything is Moneyball, maybe? Give this one a listen, folks. As always, thanks to Jetski for our theme music and to Jeremy Allison for our artwork. PATREON PREVIEW: Rambo: Last Blood (2019) with Roman Pessarov

This is a preview of a premium episode from our Patreon feed, Paid Costly For Me! Head over to Patreon.com/PodCastyForMe to hear more for just $5 a month. Like a bizarro Clint Eastwood, Sylvester Stallone parlayed two iconic roles into a decades-long career as a movie star and filmmaker, restauranteur, and conservative hero - only he's short and a lousy director. In 2019, Stallone put his crusading 'Nam vet character out to pasture with RAMBO: LAST BLOOD, a half-assed UNFORGIVEN riff that finds Rambo going up against some rightwing fever-dream "Mexican" human traffickers. Beyond featuring almost zero Mexicans, the film also features zero Mexico: it was largely shot in Bulgaria. Bulgaria's rise as a filmmaking hotspot is thanks in large part to the success of Stallone's Expendables franchise, which allowed production company Millennium Films to turn Sofia's Nu Boyana Film Studios into a one-stop offshoring shop for Hollywood. Joining us to discuss his experience working on this film (!) and the state of the Bulgarian film industry is filmmaker and co-host of the Cinema Strolls podcast Roman Pessarov! We also take a look at the Rambo series as a whole, being a cinephile outside of the US, and learn that even former Soviet dads are ultimately a lot like other dads. GREAT ep, check it out! Soderbergh Ep. 37: The 93rd Academy Awards (2021)

Remember when Soderbergh produced the first Oscars ceremony of the covid-19 pandemic? Because he's the CONTAGION guy so he knows about viruses? I mean that's literally why he did it. He's friends with the CDC. Plus I guess he had some other ideas about how to change up the Oscars just to see what happens. Have you ever read Naomi Klein's The Shock Doctrine? It's basically like that. Anyway, we sat through the entire 93rd Academy Awards ceremony again (do NOT do this) to figure out what an awards show looks like, Soderbergh-style. Let's just say it's too bad he already called another project HAYWIRE!!! Your two intrepid hosts and one of their intrepid partners hopped in the Subaru and drove to Las Vegas to see (Channing Tatum's) Magic Mike Live, shoot guns like Dirty Harry, tour the Liberace Mansion, and bear the full brunt of late-stage capitalism or whatever. Soderbergh Ep. 36: Let Them All Talk (2020) with Veronica Phillips

All aboard the LET THEM ALL TALK episode! Hot off of all the fun they had making THE LAUNDROMAT, Soderbergh and Meryl Streep teamed up again for a largely improvised movie about three old friends taking a boat ride with one of their nephews. And it's...great?! Joining us on the main feed is our good pal, writer and High Femme editor Veronica Phillips! We chat about letting women over 70 talk about their experiences, the inherent narcissism of creativity, going Wiest Mode, and a whole lot about BOOK CLUB (2018). We've been making jokes about covering this movie but that's because we didn't realize it's actually kind of a banger. We're stupid! This is a preview of a premium episode from our Patreon feed, Paid Costly For Me! Head over to Patreon.com/PodCastyForMe to hear more for just $5 a month. A comedy script about the early days of pro football followed Steven Soderbergh like a shadow for over a decade until George Clooney finally directed it himself, hot off the critical success of GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK. It was also an important early major film role for TV star and CIA asset John Krasinski. But was it worth the wait? And what's the deal with football and screwball comedies, like, politically or whatever? We take these questions and more straight into the dang end zone! Soderbergh Ep. 35: The Laundromat (2019) with Luke Savage

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: our episode on Soderbergh's 2019 Panama Papers infotainment film THE LAUNDROMAT. Joining us to parse this deeply odd "comedic" "look" into the mysterious world of offshore finance is co-host of the Michael & Us podcast and author of The Dead Center: Reflections on Liberalism and Democracy After the End of History, Luke Savage! Together we get to the bottom of Soderbergh and Scott Z. Burns' decision to give the BIG SHORT treatment to Jake Bernstein's entirely unfunny nonfiction book Secrecy World, and find in the film a very familiar liberal disinterest in the transformative potential of moments like the Panama Papers leak. Great conversation, check it out (whether or not you've seen the pretty lousy movie)! Note: We had a small technical problem in the last 20 minutes or so, and our guest's audio quality is notably lower but still perfectly listenable for the end of the episode. We blame transnational gangs of malefactors. Roundball...talk?!?!?! That's right, it's the HIGH FLYING BIRD episode where we cover Soderbergh's second shot-on-iPhone feature, a 2019 direct-to-Netflix basketball lockout drama starring his old THE KNICK pal André Holland (and a totally different guy named Dr. Edwards). Join us for a great in-person (!) discussion of the intersections of sports, labor, race, and technology, and what exactly Soderbergh is trying to suggest he's really doing with this experimental distribution business. PATREON PREVIEW: Mr. Majestyk (1974)

This is a preview of a premium episode from our Patreon feed, Paid Costly For Me! Head over to Patreon.com/PodCastyForMe to hear more for just $5 a month. Originally written for Clint Eastwood by friend of the show Elmore Leonard, Richard Fleischer's 1974 Charles Bronson vehicle MR. MAJESTYK is that classic action film setup: a melon farmer accidentally ends up in the middle of a mob hitman's prison transport escape and teams up with a beautiful migrant labor organizer to save his crop. It's a hell of a lot of fun, and probably should have been Patreon episode 3, but here we are. We talk Bronson, small grower economics, and a whole lot about the United Farm Workers, Dolores Huerta, Larry Itliong, and Cesar Chavez. Good ep! Soderbergh Ep. 33: Unsane (2018) with Esmé Holden

It'll be a lot easier for everyone if you just listen to our episode on UNSANE, Soderbergh's 2018 shot-on-iPhone experiment that's otherwise a pretty solid thriller! Writer Esmé Holden returns to the show after far too long to talk smartphone aesthetics, involuntary holds, whether all doctors are cops or just most of them, the intersections of mental illness and misogyny and transphobia, and a very special man by the name of Gavin de Becker. Wonderful guest, wonderful conversation, check it out! Heads up: there's a very brief bit of rough audio right when our guest starts speaking, but it clears up quickly.
