Thanks For Stopping By: Lessons From A Special Sister w/ Suzanne

This week we are delighted to welcome a dear friend to the show. Suzanne O'Connor is one of Karen's seminary sisters. She lives in the Capital Region and recently published a memoir about her relationship with her sister Nancy titled, "'I Don't Want to Be Mean or Anything' said my Special Sister to the World". Available on Amazon HERE. Suzanne's sister Nancy lived with multiple mental health and developmental challenges, which Suzanne describes in her book and with us with honesty, dignity, grace, and humor. We dig into the complexities of growing up in a large family with a sibling with special needs, and explore how relationships with family evolve greatly over time. She shares heart-wrenching stories of how a system based on recovery was often insufficiently able to meet the needs of people with persistent mental illness like Nancy. Nancy was well-known for her natural gregariousness, her blunt statements of truth - sometimes silly/funny, often deeply profound, and her general selfless nature. Her insights were often spot-on, and her Nancy-isms are bound to bring a smile to your face! If you're interested in reading Suzanne's book, it's available for purchase HERE. Tool Box Talk w/Justine: Suicide Awareness In The Construction Industry

In recognition of September as suicide awareness and prevention month, our guest conversations this month are with people whose lives have been affected by suicide. This week, Pieces to Wellness is honored to share a really special conversation we had with Justine. Justine's brother Ryan died by suicide, and we admire her bravery in sharing her experience with such honest vulnerability. What Justine did next is truly extraordinary. She used her pain as motivation to raise suicide awareness in the construction industry where she works. We were fascinated to learn that the AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) has an initiative targeting suicide prevention in construction called Hard Hat Courage. Click the link to learn more! In fact, Construction Suicide Prevention Week occurs annually, to learn more, click HERE. It was especially touching when Justine talked with us about her brother Ryan. Her love for her big brother shone through in every word. Justine's team for this year's AFSP Walk (Capital Region Walk for RITA) is Ryan's Relic Band. In fact, this whole conversation is genuine, honest, and filled with compassion. Please share it with someone you love. Is there something you're struggling with? A Guided Meditation

This week's episode is short and sweet, and hopefully one you'll come back to over and over. One of the pieces that's been especially transformative for Karen's wellness is meditation, and this week she shares a guided meditation. One of the most common myths about meditation is that if you find yourself having to refocus on meditating over and over, then you're doing it wrong. In fact, refocusing on meditating over and over is what meditation is. Like most of the pieces we share, practice = progress, and meditation is no different. We don't strive for perfection here, there's no such thing. Karen shares a relatively simple 5 minute guided meditation, and we hope that you'll listen to this part as often as you need to incorporate meditation into your wellness/self-care practices. #988 Co Creator Kristen Christy: Helps One Person Everyday

Things do get better … This week, we are honored to welcome Kristen Christy to the podcast. Kristen is co-creator of 988, the suicide and crisis lifeline. In the 4 years since 988 became available, they have responded to 23.3 MILLION calls/texts/chats. Literally saving lives each and every day. Kristen describes herself as a hope dealer; she continuously spreads the message that hope is not cancelled. And what is hope? Hope can be the invitation to Help One Person Everyday or the message: Hold On, Pain Eases. Kristen leans on her role as a military spouse to reframe experiences, and reminds us that by asking for help, we give other people hope. We also get into some of the nitty gritty of building and providing suicide awareness and prevention. We encourage people to develop a safety plan consisting of 3 warning signs that you may need help, 3 reasons to stay alive, and 3 people to call. Sometimes prevention is intervention. Kristen also talks with us about post-vention, what to do after a crisis. This recovery period includes caring for the person who's had a crisis in a way that facilitates belonging and connection. It bears repeating, 988 is a literal lifeline. Share this episode with someone you care about! Is there something you're struggling with? Or something you'd like to hear us discuss? Suicide Awareness & Prevention

This week, we're re-releasing our episode on suicidal ideation in honor of Suicide Awareness month. We're talking about the difference between active and passive suicidal ideation. First of all, it's normal to think about suicide. It's much more common than most people think (a study from the NIH found that over 10% of the U.S. population experiences passive suicidal ideation in their lifetime). In this conversation we discuss the difference between passive thoughts and actively making plans to take your life. If you or anyone you know is having active suicidal ideation - meaning the person has made a plan to end their life, get help immediately. You can get help by calling 911, or by calling or texting 988 - the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. If you have passive thoughts of suicide that are becoming more frequent or intense, it's time to talk about it. There are many resources available for people who need help. By having these conversations, we hope to bring light to a dark subject. By bringing light to these subjects, we hope to help others find the courage to have conversations of their own. It all starts with normalizing conversations about mental health. Here are some helpful links: AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) - Find a mental health professional NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) - Crisis Intervention IASP (International Association for Suicide Prevention) - Suicidal Crisis Support Is there something you're struggling with? 3 Ways You Might be Self-Sabotaging: Listen All Y’all This Is Sabotage

Another raw, vulnerable conversation this week from the Instigator and the Yogi. This healing stuff is NOT for the faint of heart! In fact, the healing process is not linear, meaning that as we grow and heal, we uncover deeper layers of (fill in the blank) experience, emotion, awareness, learning, etc. This uncovering tends to be uncomfortable, and most of us dislike, or even avoid the uncomfortable. Therefore, self-sabotage is bound to creep up and companion most of us along the way. We explore 3 ways that we can self-sabotage our own growth. To be clear, we are speaking from our own lived experiences here, and this is by no means an exhaustive list; we've actually barely scratched the surface. One way we self-sabotage is by shrinking ourselves to "keep the peace". For many of us, making ourselves small or quiet, masked or hidden likely helped us survive. Continually approaching all situations as potentially life-threatening keeps our nervous systems in a constant state of sympathetic arousal, and has numerous negative long-term effects, physiologically, psychologically, relationally. The second way we self-sabotage is by saying yes when we want to say no. This behavior is very closely linked to the first method. Together, these two behaviors illustrate fawning, a trauma response that many of us adopt in unsafe environments or relationships. Over time, fawning behaviors become habitual, and appear to be deeply interwoven into the fabric of our personalities. You'll have to listen to the episode to get the deets on the third means of self-sabotage. Spoiler alert: stopping self-sabotage starts with noticing when you're doing it, and moving the needle of growth a little bit at a time. Slow and steady friends, slow and steady. Confessions From A Distorted Mind: Following Your Inner Compass

This week the Instigator and the Yogi get real and raw. How do you know if your brain is telling you the truth? When you realize that your perspective may be distorted, what do you do? Tim shares a trifecta of experience that is not for the faint of heart - feeling dismissed, misunderstood, and/or unheard. We talk through differentiating self-care from avoidance, loneliness from aloneness, fact from fiction. Ultimately, the answers emerge from the conversation itself. There's something to be said for sharing our thoughts and feelings, whether with a trusted friend or a page in a journal that helps new insights and connections emerge. Eventually, we recognize a common root, a connecting thread that links the feelings and experiences, and that's where the real healing begins. We're reminded that one of the reasons we put these episodes out each week is to help ourselves process life. It's not all sunshine and rainbows and inspiration. This is where the rubber meets the road. Especially for folks living with mental health challenges, the act of processing our experiences and reactions helps to remove the distortions so that the direction of our inner compass can once again help us find our way. Amperella: Reconnecting w/ Allison- Somatics Energy Alignment

This week, your favorite dynamic duo welcome Allison Karoly to the show! Allison is an energy and somatic practitioner, and founder of Amperella. Through Amperella, Allison provides a variety of complementary therapies including and often blending somatic experiencing, reiki, and emotion code to facilitate nervous system regulation and calm. Allison shares her story of why this work chose her, and how it helped her in her own life, eventually leading her to share these healing practices with others professionally. She emphasizes that her work is bringing people back to themselves and helping them shift. This shift can be from stuck to self-assured, from indecisive to intuitive, even from reactive to resilient. These healing practices meet people where they're at, and often help folks find a path forward that they wouldn't have otherwise found. As always, the Instigator and the Yogi share their own experiences with using these kinds of tools to help light the way for others. The Eightfold Path: An Overview

Every once in a while on Pieces to Wellness, the Instigator and the Yogi get a little spiritual about mental health and healing. This is one of those times. This week we're discussing the Eightfold Path. Many spiritual and wisdom traditions offer lists of things to do, things not to do, values and principles to live by. The Eightfold Path has its origins in Buddhism. In Buddhism, the Eightfold Path is the 4th of the Four Noble Truths, and is meant to function as a practical guide to ethical living, mental discipline, and ultimately wisdom. No wonder we like it! The big picture, high level purpose of these guiding principles are to help decrease suffering and reach enlightenment. We explore what practicing these things, walking this path looks like in today's modern world, what the pitfalls and obstacles can be and have been for us. We also dig into the similarities between these Buddhist teachings and practices, and the 8 limbs of yoga. Do you agree or disagree with our comparisons and connections? What part of the Eightfold Path comes easily to you? What's more challenging? We'd love to hear how this resonates for you! Susan has identified 5 environmental factors that impact regulation, and walks us through how our environment can increase or decrease our sensory load. We invite you to notice what parts of your environment enhance your wellness, and which parts restrict your wellness. What's within your reach that you can change to increase your sense of peace? Getting Curious w/Bridget From Curious Hearts Press

One of the things we enjoy most here on Pieces to Wellness is looking at familiar things in new ways. This week we are delighted to be joined by Bridget Kleinert, social worker, therapist, mom, author, and overall delightful human being. Bridget is the founder of Curious Hearts Press/Picture Books for Grownups, a therapy-informed way to use stories for connection, reflection, and self-understanding. Bridget describes for us that humans are wired to learn through story, and we discuss how picture books can communicate to us in ways that are less likely to trigger our defenses. Bridget also shares some really interesting drama on some of your favorite children's authors. Did you know about Dr. Seuss's Midnight Paintings? How about Maurice Sendak? Shel Silverstein? We dig deep into the vast imaginative expanse that is available to us on the other side of curiosity, and the unique ways that Bridget helps others explore this landscape using children's books. Our Desired Impact: It’s What We Do Here

Every so often, it's useful to remind ourselves as well as our listeners (especially any new ones!) what we're all about here at Pieces to Wellness. Our desired impact is three-pronged: Educate. Inspire. Support. Those three things are what we do here every week. The Instigator and the Yogi believe in the power of shared storytelling, the value of lived experience, and the vitality of connections built on respect and authentic support. Not only do we have conversations with guests who are subject matter experts in things like Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Post-Traumatic Growth, we also bring our own personal experiences onto the show to explore what challenges us and what motivates us. And most importantly, talking to each other, to our guests, and sharing these conversations with the world helps us stay the course, and find support and solace on the journey. Tune in here for a refreshing reminder of what we do here, and then share this episode with someone you care about. Are you struggling with something? Exploring Letting Go: Unleashed

This week, we're exploring the topic of letting go from a high level perspective. And what's the first thing you have to do to explore? You have to let go of the idea that you already have all the knowledge, experience, control, etc. Only then can you be truly unleashed (Karen's love of that word is another story for another day). This week we're posing as many questions as we're answering. What do you typically cling to? What's easy for you to let go of? What's the first feeling you experience in the face of uncertainty? Most often we cling to things that make us feel secure or safe, because letting go means facing the unknown. Sure there are circumstances under which letting go is a non-negotiable, it must happen. But rarely is it that clear. Generally, we have to ask ourselves, "Is this [thing/person/relationship] that I'm holding onto limiting me, or helping me grow?" and decide from there. Letting go is how we make room for new things, new experiences, new people in our lives. Literally and figuratively. You can't add more when your fists are closed or full. Even if it feels safer. Take the risk, loosen the grip, and see what happens next. Are you struggling with something? Or is there something you'd like to hear us discuss? Riding The Waves Of Change: Balancing Accountability & Grace

One of the persistent themes here on Pieces to Wellness is that healing and health are journeys of change and growth. This means that we are also constantly adjusting, re-evaluating, and adapting to what's going on within and around us. This requires the ability to balance accountability and grace, easier said than done. So of course, we had to dig into the nitty gritty of how this shows up for us. Over-emphasizing accountability looks like rigid adherence to routines, structures, ideas, while overdoing it on grace can begin to resemble apathy, rendering us stagnant. Too much accountability is no fun, too much grace holds us back. Karen waxes poetic on the distinctions between contentment and complacence, effort and surrender. Ultimately, we strive to strike a balance in which our thinking and actions are not either/or, black/white. When we're in that sweet spot of accountability and grace, we hold space for joy and progress. And from there, the possibilities are limitless. Are you struggling with something? Elevate With Anjali

This week we are delighted to welcome Anjali Mehta onto Pieces to Wellness. Like us, Anjali lives in NY's Capital Region, though she works with clients all over the world. Anjali is a Conscious Life & Parenting Coach, Somatic Breathwork Practitioner, and Immersive Meditation Facilitator. We were drawn to her vulnerability, and openness that what she offers is based in her lived experience; it's not borrowed wisdom. Anjali describes what it means to work as a somatic breathwork facilitator, and how helping people breathe consciously helps people cultivate both attunement and alignment. We talk a lot here about living in alignment with our values and goals. Anjali describes attunement as the practice of bringing the self into the present moment. Right here, right now. Notice, where are your feet? Intentionally cultivating both attunement and alignment is an ongoing moment to moment practice. You know what else is an ongoing, moment to moment practice? Breathing. Most of us breathe unconsciously, and thank goodness we can trust our breath to be there for us. Cultivating the ability to breathe consciously, mindfully, that can be a game-changer. We also share some tips about pausing when triggered, getting past the mask of toxic positivity, and the big question, how can you make an aligned choice when you're not aware of/in alignment with your true self already? Which comes first? To get in touch with Anjali, follow her on IG @elevate_with_anjali. Are you struggling with something? Or is there something you'd like to hear us discuss? How To Handle Your Demons

This week we're getting down and dirty with our demons. Often, we hear people talk about fighting their demons. As usual, the Instigator and the Yogi start there and branch out to discuss other less-familiar perspectives. What would it look like to engage our demons in other ways? What are our demons anyway? In his book, Tim describes mental-emotional demons as "brain gremlins". In other circles they may be considered to be negative narratives, self-talk, or inner messaging that can be hard to ignore. We wonder, what if our gremlin-demons represent unmet needs or expectations? What if they contain valuable information or insights about our needs and priorities? And in that case, what if we listened to what our demons have to say? Karen shares that many of her inner demons once served to protect her from fear, including fear of failure. These demons created the illusions of safety and control. When we face our demons, and maybe even befriend them, how can that set us up for a fuller, better future? Some people choose to suppress them and we feel that can often encourage the demons. So we urge you to feed your demons with love and understanding, bring them into the light and out from the shadows. Maybe you can even unmask them or even, befriend them. Learn more from our lived experience. Are you struggling with something? Or is there something you'd like to hear us discuss? Does Love Rule?

This week's episode has been brought to you in the form of a question from the delightfully curious mind of the Instigator: Is love really all we need? Does love rule? In our usual roundabout way, your favorite dynamic duo dissect the enormous topic of love. We find it to be a huge variable in life and living a healthy lifestyle. It can be a catalyst in many ways. Love can motivate or inspire us just as much as it challenges us and sometimes feels elusive entirely. We talk a lot about how offering love and perceiving love don't necessarily resonate the same, and how this difference can impede our interpersonal relationships. In short, intention does NOT equal impact. Full stop. If love is more than good intentions, how can we love our neighbors as we love ourselves? What if we don't really love ourselves? That can be an especially difficult pill to swallow, and friends, it's the most important one. Because SELF-love, loving yourself first and most, is what it's all about. Start there, and you'll be setting yourself up for success. Are you struggling with something? Or is there something you'd like to hear us discuss? IFS: A Conversation w/ Chani Getter

This week, we are honored to welcome Chani Getter to the show. Chani is a renowned psychotherapist, interfaith minister, and author of the book Mapito: Embrace Yourself. One of the therapeutic modalities Chani uses with clients is IFS, Internal Family Systems, an approach developed by Dick Schwartz. IFS takes an integrative approach to therapy, emphasizing a strong body-mind connection, and the notion that our inner experience consists of various "parts". Sometimes these parts work together in our best interest, sometimes they are at odds with each other, often they are trying to protect us from real or imagined threats. Chani weaves together stories and metaphor (2 of our favorite things!) to illustrate what IFS is and how it looks in a therapeutic setting. It takes great trust and rapport between therapist and client to create a container both safe and brave enough for the transformative impact of IFS to take place. Chani reminds us that "the way we speak informs our thinking, and the way we feel informs our speech." Everything is connected, so tools that help us name our feelings like the Gottman Feeling wheel, and apps like How We Feel can be a great place to start getting up close and personal with your inner parts. Methods Of Knowing: Let Yourself Be The Guide

This week we're excited to talk about a topic suggested by a listener, "when you have a decision to make or you're trying to understand a situation or experience, how do you know? How and when do intuition, insight, and logic factor in?" Shameless plug: reach out to us through the methods below with ideas related to mental health and lived experience, and we'll talk about it on the show! We explore some of the similarities and differences between intuition - gut feeling, insight as a deeper understanding following thought/contemplation, and logic - deliberate, reason-based decision-making. Ultimately, we determine that there is room for all 3 (though one of us advocates really strongly for logic, you'll never guess which one!). When the stakes are high, in matters of family, illness, the heart, it can be extra important not to rely on just one of these means of knowing as the sole basis for a major decision. As we've talked about before, life is complicated. We believe that our self-awareness, and understanding of our own thoughts, feelings and behaviors are essential to our ability to navigate complex situations. This kind of self-exploration, mind and body, is best done with the support of logic, trial and error, practice-based progress that informs our insight. It's not all intellectual, assessing what we're feeling and what the signals are that we're getting from our guts and our nervous systems is a delicate, dynamic process, and interpreting this information along with our perceptions of the actions of others is like a dance. Sometimes you lead, sometimes you follow. As long as you're true to your values, you'll never go wrong. Enjoy! Are you struggling with something? Or is there something you'd like to hear us discuss?
