Sylvain Berneron on how to allocate watches and turn down mountains of cash
Sylvain Berneron has gone from a side project to one of the hottest watch brands in the world. In this episode, he talks about allocating some of the most sought-after watches around and resisting outside investment while the brand grows. When we first spoke to Sylvain in 2023, Berneron was a side hustle, and he had not formally launched a watch. Recent sales results have put the brand firmly in the spotlight. 3D Printed Watches: How Apiar's Matt Oosthuizen is Reshaping Independent Watchmaking
Today's guest, Matt Oosthuizen, is one of the co-founders of Apiar, a UK-based watch brand that's the result of a passion not just for watches, but for experimenting with new technologies. Apiar, which debuted in 2023, is literally built different. Rather than following the traditional path, Apiar leans into additive manufacturing. With cases and dials printed using 3D technology, Apiar makes designs that couldn't be achieved through traditional methods, and as Oosthuizen notes, it's a constantly evolving process as Apiar grows and the technology itself develops. Beyond the innovation, Apier strives to use UK-based suppliers, resulting in watches quite unlike anything else out there.
