The Orlando Magic Hall of Fame Pyramid: Who Made the List?
Who are the greatest Orlando Magic players of all time? Instead of making another traditional Top 10 list, we're ranking 37 Orlando Magic careers—one for every season in franchise history—using a Hall of Fame Pyramid inspired by Bill Simmons' Book of Basketball. In Part 3 of my conversation with Ryan Kaminsky of Magic on SI, we go through more than three decades of Orlando Magic history and debate where everyone belongs—from role players and fan favorites to the biggest superstars ever to wear a Magic uniform. At the top is the Orlando Magic Pantheon: Dwight Howard, Shaquille O'Neal, Tracy McGrady and Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway. But after those four, things get much more difficult. Where should Darrell Armstrong rank after his remarkable rise from the end of the bench to Sixth Man of the Year, Most Improved Player and even receiving MVP votes? How high should Nikola Vucevic rank after becoming one of the franchise's statistical leaders? Have Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner already done enough to establish themselves among Orlando's all-time greats? We also revisit the importance of Nick Anderson, Jameer Nelson, Hedo Turkoglu, Horace Grant, Dennis Scott, Rashard Lewis, Scott Skiles, Aaron Gordon, J.J. Redick, Jalen Suggs, Terrence Ross, Victor Oladipo, Evan Fournier, Grant Hill, Steve Francis and many more. Ryan challenges several of my rankings along the way, makes the case for players who should move higher and brings up some notable omissions—including Vince Carter, Ben Wallace, Marcin Gortat, Courtney Lee and Matt Barnes. We also get into one of the biggest questions behind any all-time ranking: What exactly makes someone an Orlando Magic great? Is it peak talent? Longevity? Individual statistics? All-Star appearances? Playoff success? Memorable moments? Or what that player meant to the franchise and its fans? 🏀 In this episode: - Ranking 37 Orlando Magic careers - The Orlando Magic Hall of Fame Pyramid - Dwight Howard vs. Shaq for the No. 1 spot - T-Mac vs. Penny Hardaway - Why Darrell Armstrong ranks so highly - Nikola Vucevic's place in Magic history - Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner climbing the rankings - Nick Anderson's importance to the franchise - Remembering the 1995 and 2009 NBA Finals teams - Hedo Turkoglu, Jameer Nelson, Horace Grant, Dennis Scott & Rashard Lewis - The best players who didn't make the Top 37 - Peak performance vs. longevity - Fan favorites, forgotten Magic players and some serious Orlando Magic nostalgia This is only the preliminary Orlando Magic HOF Pyramid.
