THE BOYZ Kevin Calls Out K-Pop’s Industry | ENHYPEN, Taemin, ATEEZ, KiiiKiii + More
THE BOYZ's Kevin has been speaking candidly about the K-pop industry, cultural appropriation, capitalism and why he believes K-pop fans deserve better. There were quite a few points I found myself agreeing with, so that's the centre of today's discussion as I get into what he said, where I think his criticism is justified and the uncomfortable relationship K-pop has always had with borrowing from other cultures while operating as an aggressively commercial industry. There's also a LOT happening elsewhere. ENHYPEN are already working on their next album and Ni-ki somehow received backlash just for mentioning it, ATEEZ are coming back in November, KiiiKiii ended promotions without a music-show win, XngHan & Xoul have introduced four new Japanese members, and Kim Soo-hyun's appearance at the AAAs is facing protests. I also get into the SKIBIDI backlash, why calling every criticism of it “it's just brainrot!” misses the point, and Taemin's latest album, which sent me into a completely different conversation about idols leaving the companies that built their musical identities. Creative freedom is great, but I'm increasingly convinced that some idols are exceptional products and performers without necessarily being particularly good at curating themselves as recording artists. And for this week's Micah's Picks, we're back with TUIDE! Sunkiss and ABD have officially made the cut after I was literally arguing with their fans about their debut last week.

TUIDE Backlash Proves K-Pop Fans Can’t Handle Fair Criticism | Mark, BLACKPINK + More
TUIDE have officially debuted, and while I found the song a little underwhelming, the bigger story for me became the reaction to my review. Some people took a pretty fair critique VERY personally, which opened up a wider conversation about how defensive K-pop fans can get when you don’t immediately praise a group they like. I also push back on the idea that I have some huge SM bias, especially considering I was just as critical of HEARTS2HEARTS when they debuted last year. Apparently consistency only counts when people agree with you lol. Elsewhere, I discuss Mark apologising again and previewing new music, BLACKPINK’s solo careers, and I’m officially introducing Micah’s Picks, starting with ENHYPEN’s Bad For You. It's essentially another form of Anatomy of a Song, but it’ll now occasionally appear at the end of my weekly episodes whenever there’s a song I really want to dissect instead of always needing its own separate episode.

Red Velvet Hold Back Their Harmonies on 'Velvet Summer' | Anatomy of a Song
Red Velvet are BACK, so of course I had to put 'Velvet Summer' through the Anatomy treatment! This time though... surprisingly not THAT much to uncover? The harmonies and layering are noticeably more laid back and simple than what we usually get from Red Velvet, which is a bit of a shame considering how ridiculous their vocal arrangements can be. I also would've LOVED more R&B on an album called Velvet Summer 😭 but thankfully "Orchestra" came through and gave me some of what I was craving. Still VERY happy to have them back and hear these voices together again. A simpler Anatomy episode this time, but an interesting one nonetheless!

aespa's Japanese Mini Has Me Wanting an R&B Album | 'Kiss N Tell', 'In halo', 'Orbit Pop' + More!
aespa's Japanese mini album turned out to be a really enjoyable listen, but what stood out most to me was just how sultry and natural their harmonies are. They feel completely tailor-made for the group's voices, and after hearing this project, I'd absolutely love to hear SM lean into a full R&B release in the future. There weren't loads of surprising vocal moments this time around, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Instead, this mini reminded me just how well aespa's voices blend together, especially on songs like "Kiss N Tell." I also hope SM keeps this brighter, upbeat direction for their next mini because the reception to this era has been so positive. As always, I break down the vocals using my Civilian, Athlete, Olympian and World Class ranking system, while looking at the harmonies, layering and arrangements that make these songs work.

EVAN's Documentary Changed How I See K-Pop, NewJeans Return as Four + More
Today's episode is a bit of a deep dive into EVAN's documentary, which turned out to be far more revealing than I expected. From the title track selection process and the songs that almost made the album, to just how much creative freedom artists really have, it gave me a lot to think about. I also couldn't help but notice who seemed to be making a lot of the decisions in the room... I also discuss NewJeans returning together for their anniversary video, The world cup, Jungwon personally apologising to fans in Kazakhstan, CORTIS' concert, EVAN announcing his September mini album, Tuide's debut, BTS' World Cup performance, RM reflecting on Arirang, and Ningning calling out sasaengs. SUPERM vs GOT the beat. Did Their Sequels Live Up to the Originals? | Anatomy of a Song
In this episode of Anatomy of a Song, I compare SUPERM's "Tiger Inside" with GOT the beat's "Stamp On It" to see whether either supergroup managed to recapture the magic of their explosive debuts. Vocally, there's still plenty to admire. The performances are polished, the harmonies are solid and the execution is exactly what you'd expect from two SM supergroups packed with elite talent. What surprised me, however, was how much both follow-up title tracks lacked the excitement and urgency of "Jopping" and "Step Back." While Tiger Inside and Stamp On It are enjoyable songs in their own right, neither reached the same level of energy, impact or replay value for me. Using my civilian, athlete, Olympian and world class ranking system, I break down both songs to see which supergroup came out on top and why their second title tracks ultimately fell short of their iconic debuts.

ATEEZ's Vocal Evolution Leads to One Unexpected Conclusion | Anatomy of a Song
In this episode of Anatomy of a Song, I revisit ATEEZ through "Treasure," "Inception," "Be With You," "Guerrilla," "Toxin," "Lemon Drop," and "Bad." One thing became clear almost immediately: ATEEZ's catalogue is packed with far more vocal layering than I expected. Whether it's subtle harmonies, stacked backing vocals or hidden textures beneath the mix, almost every song revealed details I'd never fully appreciated before. The biggest surprise, however, was "Bad." Despite becoming one of the group's most successful singles, it was the one track that felt vocally the simplest to me. Compared to the rich arrangements found across the rest of their catalogue, I couldn't help but feel it lacked some of the intricate layering that makes so many ATEEZ songs rewarding to revisit. MAMAMOO Are 4 Great Soloists... But Not 4 Great Harmonisers? | Anatomy of a Song
In this episode of Anatomy of a Song, I revisit MAMAMOO through "Decalcomanie," "Destiny," "I Miss You," "Paint Me" and "Where Are We Now." There's no denying the quality of the individual singers. While the lead lines consistently impressed me, I often found myself wanting richer, more adventurous vocal blending that matched the calibre of the individual voices. It left me asking an interesting question: is MAMAMOO at their best as four outstanding soloists rather than four natural harmonisers?

What impressed me most was how naturally the members communicate emotion through their voices. Their individuality is clear, but they also know when to blend together, creating performances that feel effortless rather than overproduced.

NewJeans' Individuality Shines, But Their Harmonies Leave Me Wanting More | Anatomy of a Song
In this episode of Anatomy of a Song, I revisit NewJeans by stripping back the vocals of "Hurt," "Cool With You," "Supernatural," "Get Up" and "Super Shy." One thing became immediately obvious: some member have such distinct vocal colour. Whether it's tone, phrasing or delivery, it can beremarkably easy to guess who's singing, giving the group a strong sense of individuality that has become one of their defining qualities. What surprised me, however, was how restrained the harmonies are. While the simplicity suits NewJeans' minimalist sound, I couldn't help but wonder how much more impactful some of these songs could have been with richer vocal layering and more adventurous arrangements.
