What is somatic movement? with Raj Barker
Raj Barker is the founder of BURN by Body Medicine, a unique somatic movement method that combines yoga, mat Pilates, cardio and breath awareness. We’re so excited to have Raj teach her BURN classes at KICStudio this August and October and wanted to introduce her to you beforehand. In this episode, Raj speaks with Laura about how she first came to somatic movement during her time teaching at The Class in New York City, what defines a somatic movement practice, and why the language we use around nervous system regulation matters. She explores the idea that moments of nervous system dysregulation are a normal part of being human and how practices such as somatic movement can help us develop the internal resources to meet those moments with greater awareness and choice. Rib recontouring…we have thoughts!
We got a DM from you asking us for our thoughts on the rise of rib recontouring surgery so this week we’re talking about it. In case it’s not come across your algorithm - rib recontouring is a surgery that fractures the lower ribs to reduce the size of the waist. We discuss what the surgery involves, what experts are saying about it, and the marketing of the procedure that makes it look more like a holiday than a surgery. An explainer on different contraception - with Dr Jacqueline Coombe
Dr Jacqueline Coombe is a Senior Research Fellow in the Sexual Health Unit at the University of Melbourne. Jacqui has been working within the sexual and reproductive health space for nearly a decade and she completed her PhD in long-acting reversible contraception. In this episode, Jacqui sits down with Steph to talk through all of the different contraceptive options in Australia - the Pill, IUD, Implanon, vaginal ring, hormonal injection and condoms, as well as vasectomies, the ‘morning after’ pill and the pull out method. Jacqui explains the efficacy and potential side-effects of each method, why some people choose certain methods over others, the process of getting an IUD inserted, and the questions you should ask your GP or healthcare provider beforehand. QUESTION #1: My partner is the best but his parents don’t seem to like me. They live overseas and they have no interest in visiting us. I try really hard to involve them in our lives, but they never reciprocate. I can’t help but think I am not who they wanted for their son or their family. I’d be very happy to let the friendship naturally shift, however she is incredibly dependent on me.
