The Dave HollandInterview In this episode of JazzConversation with Rickard Malmsten, I have the pleasure of speaking withthe legendary bassist, composer and bandleader Dave Holland. Dave Holland has been animportant figure in modern jazz for more than five decades. His career began inLondon, where he worked with leading British jazz musicians and visitingAmerican artists before being invited by Miles Davis to joinhis groundbreaking band in 1968. Holland played on severalof Davis’s landmark recordings, including In a Silent Way and BitchesBrew, and became an important part of the development of electric andfusion jazz. During and after his time with Davis, he also worked withmusicians such as Joe Henderson, Chick Corea, Stan Getz, TheloniousMonk, Sam Rivers and many others. In 1970, Holland co-foundedCircle with Chick Corea, Anthony Braxton and Barry Altschul,opening another chapter in his exploration of free and creative music. He laterformed the Gateway Trio with John Abercrombie and JackDeJohnette and went on to lead a series of highly regarded ensembles, includinghis quintet and big band. In this conversation, DaveHolland reflects on his journey as a musician, his experiences working withsome of the most influential figures in jazz, his approach to the bass,composition and improvisation, and the different musical environments that haveshaped his career.
