Idiot's Guide to Imagineering

The Idiots: Stephen, Kaity, Marissa, Jenny, and Amanda

Welcome to Idiot’s Guide to Imagineering, the podcast where big ideas, thoughtful conversations, and a little bit of chaos come together to explore the past, present, and future of Disney Parks.

Hosted by a team of former Cast Members, lifelong Disney fans, and self-proclaimed “Idiots” (a title we wear proudly), we reimagine Disney Parks by creating our own original concepts that blend creativity, storytelling, and real-world practicality. From rides and resorts to restaurants and entire lands, each episode features a fresh pitch designed not just to entertain, but to break down how Imagineering actually works and why certain choices resonate with guests in the first place.

But this is not just a podcast, it is an experience. With immersive audio production and narrative-driven segments, we bring our ideas to life in a way that makes you feel like you are right there in the parks with us.

Our projects are the starting point, but the real focus is what they reveal about design, innovation, guest experience, and the evolving landscape of themed entertainment. Whether we are unpacking the “why” behind a storytelling choice or digging into the challenges of park planning, we aim to keep it insightful, approachable, and always a little bit idiotic.

And in our Magic Makers series, we sit down with real creatives from across Disney Parks and Experiences to hear their stories, ideas, and the lessons behind the magic.

Whether you are a lifelong Disney fan, an aspiring Imagineer, or just someone who loves a good story well told, Idiot’s Guide to Imagineering is your ticket to park talk that is curious, clever, and always a good time. You might even start to see the parks in a way you never have before.

Step into the story with us and imagine what comes next.

State of the Kingdom: Q3 2026

One month after D23, Disney’s announced future is already starting to take clearer shape. In our Q3 State of the Kingdom, we check in on what’s opened, what’s going vertical, and what’s changed since Disney laid out its latest roadmap. From The Magic of Disney Animation and Tropical Americas to Monstropolis, Piston Peak, Space Mountain Earthrise and a newly updated Toy Story Land attraction, we’re looking at the details becoming real across the parks. Then, we turn to the technology and rumors we’re watching, including a possible helicopter tease, Disneyland’s transforming pirate, and a new patent that could change what Disney is able to put in the skies. Which, naturally, leads us to the possibility of Kathy Copter over Piston Peak and flying presidents like George Washington taking to the skies. D23 gave us the roadmap. Now we get to watch what actually happens to it. Send us Fan Mail Don't forget to check us out on Instagram!

Why Piston Peak Might Be Imagineering’s Most Interesting New Project

Piston Peak surprised us. After seeing the model at D23, what stood out wasn’t just the rides. It was the place itself: the mountains, water, trails, architecture, sightlines, and the way this unlikely Cars-meets-national-parks idea suddenly felt completely believable. In this offseason conversation, Stephen and Kaity dig into why Piston Peak may be one of Imagineering’s most interesting projects in development, from how it fits inside Frontierland to the design choices helping it feel like it belongs there. We also talk Parkitecture, Magic Kingdom’s changing skyline, the role of landscape and water, Miss Fritter’s unexpected addition, the new ride system, and what makes a theme park land somewhere you actually want to spend time. Not a news recap. A deeper look at why Piston Peak works, where it could stumble, and what Imagineering seems to be trying to accomplish. Send us Fan Mail Don't forget to check us out on Instagram!

The Bigger Conversation Behind Villains Land

D23 gave us more answers about Villains Land. Two weeks later, we’re less interested in recapping what Disney announced and more interested in what those choices actually tell us. In our first offseason episode, Stephen, Kaity, and Jenny dig into the bigger creative questions behind Magic Kingdom’s newest land: whether an IP-based project can still be truly original Imagineering, why “Villains Land” may be exactly the right name, how years of concept art and rumors shaped expectations, and why family-friendly storytelling doesn’t have to mean removing fear. We also look at the difference between a good attraction idea and the right attraction idea, how the two announced rides may solve a much bigger design problem, where the concept could still fall short, and why some of the most interesting parts of Villains Land are the pieces Disney hasn’t shown us yet. This isn’t another announcement recap. It’s the conversation underneath it. Send us Fan Mail Don't forget to check us out on Instagram!

S4 E25: Season 4 Finale | Competing for a Place in Villains Land

Season 4 comes to an end with our darkest challenge yet. Before Disney reveals more about Villains Land at D23, we wanted one final opportunity to imagine it ourselves. In this special season finale, three Idiots go head-to-head by designing different experiences for Disney's newest announced land. One will create a brand-new attraction, another a themed dining experience, and another a live entertainment spectacular. But only one project will earn a place in our version of Villains Land. Using our internal Imagineering evaluation system, Stephen and Amanda judge each concept on whether it is Fun, Understandable, Creative, and Thoughtful and ultimately greenlight just one winning project. Along the way, we also look back on the biggest season in Idiot's Guide to Imagineering history, celebrate three incredible years of the podcast, reflect on our favorite projects from Season 4, and share what you can expect from us after D23 and beyond. Join us for one final Imagineering challenge before the future of Villains Land is officially revealed. Send us Fan Mail Don't forget to check us out on Instagram!

S4 E24: Carousel of Preservation | Bridging the Past and Future of Progress

Disney recently announced the biggest overhaul to Carousel of Progress in decades… but how do you modernize one of Walt Disney’s most personal attractions without losing the heart that made it special? For our 100th original Imagineering project, we’re taking on that challenge with a concept built around one simple idea: progress doesn’t require replacing the past. It should build upon it. In this milestone episode, we imagine the Carousel of Preservation, a new pre-show experience that celebrates the attraction’s history while preparing guests for its future. We explore how Disney could preserve beloved elements of the original show, improve guest flow, honor Walt’s optimistic vision, and create a new chapter for one of Magic Kingdom’s most iconic attractions. Plus, we look back at the evolution of Idiot’s Guide to Imagineering across four seasons, celebrate 100 original projects with the ImaginIdiot community, and discuss how even the song “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” could evolve for a new generation. It’s a celebration of where we’ve been, where we’re going, and the future we’re excited to imagine together. Send us Fan Mail Don't forget to check us out on Instagram!

S4 E23: Luigi's Pit Crew Dash | Plussing Disney's Most Complete Themed Land

Cars Land is already one of the most beloved and immersive themed lands Disney has ever built. So what happens when you try to improve something that's already great? This week, the Idiots head back to Disney California Adventure to tackle one of the most difficult Imagineering challenges we've faced all season: plussing a near-perfect land. After examining the history of Luigi's attraction and the role it plays within Radiator Springs, we propose a bold replacement: Luigi's Pit Crew Dash, a new family launch coaster that expands the story of Cars Land in a way no current attraction does. Guests become the test drivers for Luigi and Guido's newest pit crew recruits, racing through a high-speed training course complete with synchronized pit stop sequences, live evaluations, and a final public demonstration right in the heart of Radiator Springs. Along the way, we explore a bigger question about the future of themed entertainment: should attractions simply tell contained stories, or should they function as living parts of the worlds they inhabit? S4 E22: Final Frontier with WALL•E & EVE | Launching Tomorrowland Into the Future

Tomorrowland is supposed to represent the future… so what happens when one of its oldest attractions starts feeling stuck in the past? This week, Kaity takes on one of Magic Kingdom’s most debated pieces of real estate: Tomorrowland Speedway. We explore replacing the opening-day attraction with Final Frontier with WALL•E & EVE, a new E-ticket space adventure that brings guests to the year 3505 for humanity’s next great expedition beyond Earth. At the McCrea Center for Space Research, guests join WALL•E and EVE aboard a KUKA-powered rocket pod as they travel through the cosmos, explore the moon, and help discover what the future of responsible space exploration could look like. Along the way, we discuss the challenge of adding another space-themed attraction to Disney parks, how WALL•E can expand beyond its original story, and why keeping Tomorrowland moving forward may require leaving parts of its past behind. S4 E21: Alice's Unbirthday Party | Blurring the Lines of Attraction Design

What happens when an attraction isn't just a show, a walkthrough, or an interactive space... but all three at once? This week, Marissa presents her very first solo Imagineering project, transforming EPCOT's UK Pavilion into Alice's Unbirthday Party, a story-driven Wonderland adventure where guests become active participants in a secret celebration hidden from the Queen of Hearts. Blending an interactive hedge maze, immersive environments, live storytelling, and playful exploration, this concept reimagines one of World Showcase's quietest corners as a fully connected guest experience where every choice helps bring the Unbirthday Party to life. More than an Alice in Wonderland attraction, this episode explores a growing trend in modern Imagineering: the blending of traditional attraction formats into a single, seamless experience. S4 E20: Kuzco's Imperial Expedition | Delivering the E-Ticket Disneyland Paris Deserves

BOOM BABY! Disneyland Park at Disneyland Paris has not received a brand new headline attraction in more than 20 years. For a park widely considered one of Disney's most beautiful, that raises an interesting question: when is it finally time to make a major change? This week, Stephen heads overseas to tackle one of the biggest Imagineering challenges of the season. After weighing several controversial possibilities, he makes one bold decision and pitches an all new Adventureland experience inspired by The Emperor's New Groove, reimagining one corner of the park through a completely new lens. Along the way, the team explores what makes a Disney IP truly belong in a land, why some attractions are worth sacrificing to move a park forward, and what Disneyland Paris should prioritize as it enters its next era. S4 E19: Golden Mickey Awards District | Unifying a Fragmented Area of Hollywood Studios

What happens when a corner of a theme park stops working as one idea and becomes a group of separate experiences that never fully connect? This week, Stephen breaks down one of the most overlooked areas of Disney’s Hollywood Studios: Commissary Lane. While each part of the street still functions on its own, the overall space has slowly drifted into fragmentation, with two dining outlets and entertainment existing side by side without a shared purpose. Instead of replacing it with a single attraction or layering on another IP overlay, we explore a different approach, rebuilding the entire street as one unified experience. Introducing The Golden Mickey Awards District, a connected transformation where arrival, participation, and celebration all become part of a single Hollywood event. This is about restoring cohesion, intent, and narrative clarity to a space that lost its shared story, and making Hollywood Studios feel a little more like Hollywood again. S4 E18: Wilderness Explorers Challenge Course | Bringing Adventure to the Heart of Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom broke Stephen this week. After scrapping multiple fully developed concepts (including a Tarzan attraction, a suspended canopy ride, and an Emperor’s New Groove idea that refused to fit the park’s philosophy), the team tackles one of the most challenging design questions in Disney Parks: what is missing on Discovery Island? Inspired by Shanghai Disneyland’s Challenge Trails and grounded in the values that define Animal Kingdom, Stephen proposes the Wilderness Explorers Challenge Course: a multi-level treetop adventure through Discovery Island that transforms guests from observers into participants as they climb, cross, and explore their way toward Paradise Falls. Plus, listener Nate Heasley (the reviewer formerly known as "Hedgehog") joins the show with an Imagineering pitch of his own, finally proving once and for all that he is, in fact, a real person, not a woodland creature. Can a challenge course become Animal Kingdom’s next great adventure? And what makes designing for this park so different from every other Disney destination? S4 E17: Spaceship Earth Reconnected | Redefining Communication in the Age of AI

A timeless EPCOT icon becomes the center of a modern debate about how communication continues to evolve in the age of AI. This week, Stephen reimagines the final act of Spaceship Earth, restoring its physical storytelling roots while introducing a new interactive layer that reflects how technology is reshaping human connection in real time. The result is a grounded, thoughtful update that stays true to the attraction’s core thesis: bringing people closer together across distance, language, and time. From classic communication scenes to a carefully constrained AI-driven personalization system, the pitch explores what it means for Disney storytelling to remain human in an increasingly automated world. Plus, Brett of Ride Creator joins the Idiots live to pitch Mission to Mars…Needs Moms!, a chaotic crossover that combines the infamous Disney film with the classic Tomorrowland attraction in a way that somehow makes perfect sense. S4 E16: Port Royal Provisions | Repurposing a Forgotten Pirates Restaurant

A quiet corner of Adventureland sits directly across from Pirates of the Caribbean but rarely feels like part of the larger story unfolding around it. This week Stephen reimagines that space by repurposing Tortuga Tavern and its adjacent unused stage into Port Royal Provisions, a quick service port eatery paired with a live civic stage that turns everyday guest flow into part of a living breathing harbor town. The result is a layered environment where the civilian side of the Caribbean world responds to constant pirate activity just offshore. From British Caribbean inspired quick service food to civic announcements and reactive storytelling moments, the entire area is designed to feel orderly on the surface with tension always just beyond the waterline. The goal is simple make this forgotten pocket of Adventureland feel intentional connected and alive. Plus for the second week in a row we are featuring a listener submitted Imagineering pitch this time from Marshal Knight who brings a bold idea that relocates an existing Magic Kingdom attraction to EPCOT in a way that just makes sense. S4 E15: Canada Reimagined | Restoring the Energy to EPCOT’s Most Skipped Pavilion

EPCOT’s Canada Pavilion often feels like a space guests walk through rather than stay in. This week, Stephen reimagines it as a living cultural district inspired by Toronto’s Kensington Market, where layered storytelling, music, and guest interaction turn the upper level of the pavilion into a constantly evolving environment. At the center of it all is a touring 4★Town concert experience that weaves through the pavilion and encourages exploration, culminating in a reworked theater and character moment that feels like part of the world rather than a separate show. The goal is simple: make Canada feel alive, repeatable, and worth returning to throughout the day. Plus, for the first time ever, we’re featuring a listener-submitted Imagineering pitch from our new friend Cam Sullivan as he shares his concept for a new Mandalorian addition to Galaxy’s Edge. And honestly… he’s coming for our jobs. Send us Fan Mail Don't forget to check us out on Instagram!

S4 E14: New York Backlot | Rethinking Expansion at Hollywood Studios

What does it actually take to expand a theme park that is facing an identity crisis with little to no room to grow? This week, Stephen leads a deeper, more strategic conversation on the current state of Disney’s Hollywood Studios and why the park feels like it is constantly in motion without ever fully expanding. Using the Imagineering concept of displacement, we break down how Disney quietly reshapes space behind the scenes to make growth possible in an active park environment. From the return of animation as a process-driven experience to the rise of regional storytelling frameworks like Tropical Americas, this episode explores a broader shift in how Disney is approaching theme park design. Then, we put that thinking into practice. Introducing New York Backlot, a production-driven expansion that reimagines New York City not as a destination, but as a working film set inside Hollywood Studios. Featuring a reimagined MuppetVision 3D, the Jim Henson Creature Shop, and a park-wide shift toward storytelling as an active process, this concept reframes how IP, space, and story can coexist. This is not just a land idea. It is a case study in how Disney parks evolve in real time. Send us Fan Mail Don't forget to check us out on Instagram!

S4 E13: One Night with the Muses | Turning Myth into a Showstopper

What happens when a Fantasyland theater stops feeling like a must-see and starts feeling like filler? This week, Stephen is joined by Jenny and Marissa as we take on one of the most iconic show spaces in the park and ask a bold question: what if Mickey’s PhilharMagic evolves into something entirely new? We explore a reimagined experience built around the Muses from Hercules, reframing them not as supporting characters but as the storytellers of mythology itself. In this version, guests step into an immersive, live performance where the Muses summon and reshape the myth of heroes in real time, turning Hercules into a case study in how legends are created, remembered, and rewritten. Along the way, we break down the operational tradeoffs of replacing a high-capacity, push-button attraction with a live performer-driven spectacle, how the theater itself becomes part of the show, and why it is designed to feel like a one-night-only event happening every day. We also dig into modular storytelling through music, with each Muse interpreting “The Gospel Truth” in their own voice, the return of Hades as a disruptive force in the narrative, and how songs like “Zero to Hero” and “A Star Is Born” are recontextualized as myth-making moments rather than character arcs. Finally, we explore how this concept opens the door to a larger idea of myth-based storytelling across Disney’s hero library, and what it means when Fantasyland stops being something you watch and becomes something you are part of.
