Alyssa and I (Fort Boggy State Park)

Dedication from Alyssa To my family and friends: thank you for believing in my big dreams, always encouraging me, and supporting me along the way. To my former coworkers from Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site and Cape Disappointment State Park: I am so grateful for all the learning and laughing we shared. During those times, I was shown that my self-doubt could fade away and that my passions could lead me here. Episode Description Sometimes the smaller parks hold some of the biggest surprises. In this episode of the Trailblazing Texas Podcast, I sit down with Ranger Alyssa from Fort Boggy State Park to explore this peaceful East Texas destination and discover what makes it worth adding to your Texas State Parks list. We get to know Alyssa and the path that led her to Texas Parks and Wildlife before diving into everything Fort Boggy has to offer, from its history and the story behind the park's name to its lake, fishing, wildlife, hiking trails, primitive camping, and some of the hidden gems visitors might otherwise miss. Alyssa shares what surprises people most when they arrive, why the park is such a great place to escape the crowds, and how simply stepping onto a trail can lead you to a quiet side of Texas that's becoming harder to find. We also talk about conservation, the work happening behind the scenes to protect the park, memorable visitor experiences, and what first-time visitors should know before planning their trip. If you've ever driven past Fort Boggy State Park or simply haven't heard much about it, this episode might give you a reason to change that. Tim and I (pt 2 Backpacking with Buckley)

Episode Description In Part 2 of my conversation with Tim Buckley of Backpacking with Buckley, we head straight into the trails, places, people, and experiences that have shaped his life as a backpacker. We spend plenty of time talking Texas, Tim’s first impressions of backpacking here, the misconceptions people have about our landscape, and what makes places like Big Bend and the Guadalupe Mountains so different from anywhere else in the country. We also talk about the heat, long water carries, rugged terrain, wildlife, and why Texas has a way of earning your respect. From there, we go beyond Texas to some of Tim’s favorite and most underrated backpacking destinations, the places that exceeded his expectations, and a few adventures still sitting high on his bucket list. But some of my favorite moments in this episode aren't about destinations at all. Tim opens up about the backpacking community, the people he's met along the way, and the unexpected friendships that have grown through Backpacking with Buckley. We talk about documenting adventures as a way of preserving memories, the messages from viewers that have stuck with him, and the responsibility outdoor creators have when introducing more people to the places we love. And, of course, we couldn't have Tim on without some gear talk. We get into inexpensive gear that works, gear worth every penny, underrated items, and the things that always seem to find their way into his pack. Finally, we look ahead at what's next for Backpacking with Buckley and hear Tim's message to anyone who's been sitting on the sidelines thinking about taking that first backpacking trip. This one is about more than miles, mountains, and gear. It's about the places we discover, the memories we make, and the people we meet along the way. Tim and I (pt 1 Backpacking with Buckley)

A message from the Host One of the things I love most about hosting Trailblazing Texas Podcast is getting to sit down with people who share a genuine passion for the outdoors. My time with Tim Buckley was no exception. What I appreciate about Tim is that he doesn't just share backpacking adventures. He shares the lessons, the mistakes, the laughter, and the people who make those experiences meaningful. We talked about everything from his early days on the trail to building Backpacking with Buckley, the realities of creating outdoor content, and why the gear you carry should never define the kind of backpacker you are. And, of course, we couldn't have a conversation without talking about Texas and my love for it! This is one of those conversations that reminds me why I started this podcast in the first place: to connect with people, share their stories, and celebrate the outdoor community. Tim, thank you for taking the time to join me, sharing your experiences, and reminding us that there's room on the trail for everyone. Episode Description Backpacking with Buckley: The Man Behind the Miles | Part 1 What does it take to turn a love for backpacking into a community of outdoor enthusiasts? In Part 1 of our two-part series, I sit down with Tim Buckley, the man behind Backpacking with Buckley, to explore his journey from his first backpacking adventures to sharing his experiences with thousands of outdoor enthusiasts. We dive into the stories behind his YouTube channel, the challenges of creating authentic outdoor content, and the lessons he's learned along the trail. Tim shares his thoughts on backpacking gear, the influence of social media on the outdoor community, and why we should never judge another hiker by the gear they carry. We also head to Texas to talk about his adventures in Big Bend and what makes backpacking in the Lone Star State so memorable. Whether you're a seasoned backpacker or just getting started, this conversation is about more than miles and gear. It's about the people, experiences, and passion that keep us coming back to the trail. 🎙️ Subscribe to Trailblazing Texas Podcast and join us for Part 2 on October 1!

    Nate and I (pt 3 of 3)

A quote from Nate The world is a mountain, what we do is shout, the echo comes back to us. - Rumi Episode Description PART 3 OF 3 — NATE | ONE MAN’S ODYSSEY We’ve talked about the peaks. We’ve talked about navigation, weather, risk, and what it takes to safely travel through the mountains of New Mexico. For the final chapter, we go beyond the summits. Nate takes us into some of Northern New Mexico’s hidden gems, the places that don’t always get the attention of neighboring Colorado, but absolutely deserve a spot on any hiker’s list. We talk underrated trails, places to find solitude, the best seasons to visit, small mountain towns, local stops, and where he’d send someone with three days and a backpack. Then we get into the stories. The unforgettable days. The mistakes. The close calls. The funny moments. The backcountry camps you never want to leave. And finally, we talk about the moment Nate realized his journey through New Mexico’s high peaks had become about something much bigger than simply checking mountains off a list. This is Part 3 of 3 with Nate — One Man’s Odyssey. Three episodes. A whole lot of mountains. And one incredible journey through New Mexico. Trailblazing Texas Podcast Get outside. Nate and I (pt 2 of 3)

A Quote from Nate: With the eye of my mind I gazed upon Paradise; the summit of every mountain is lower than its summit. - St. Ephrem the Syrian Episode Description: In Part 1, we talked about where Nate’s journey began and what eventually led him toward the challenge of climbing New Mexico’s 12,000-foot peaks. In Part 2, we head deeper into the mountains, and into the skills, decisions, and risks that come with being there. Have hikers become too dependent on GPS? What navigation skills should every mountain hiker know? How quickly can weather turn dangerous in the New Mexico mountains, and when do you make the call to turn around? We also get into the dangers hikers often underestimate, mistakes Nate sees people making on the trail, how risk management changes above 12,000 feet, and what happens when an adventure suddenly becomes serious. Nate shares what safety and emergency gear never leaves his pack, his approach to lightning and building storms, experiences getting off route, and the lessons the mountains have taught him along the way. Because reaching the summit is only part of the goal. Making good decisions and getting back down safely is what really matters. Nate's Dedication: To Lindsey, Austin, Elena, and Aurora. Thank you for sacrificing your time and time with me so I can pursue this passion. I love you! Episode Description — Nate | Part 1 of 3 What starts as a love for hiking can sometimes turn into something much bigger. In Part 1 of this three-part Trailblazing Texas Podcast series, I sit down with Nate to hear the story behind his passion for the outdoors, the mountains, and an ambitious goal: climbing New Mexico's 12,000-foot peaks. Then we head into the high country of New Mexico. Nate takes us inside the challenge of the 12ers: the peaks that surprised him, the ones that were tougher—or easier—than expected, the mountains that humbled him, and the summits that have given him the greatest sense of accomplishment. And, of course, we have to talk favorites. Best views? Best approach? Most remote? And if you could climb only ONE New Mexico 12er, which one should it be? Henry and I (Tarptent)

Henry’s Motto: "De omnibus dubitandum" Doubt everything. Episode Description Long before ultralight backpacking became mainstream, Henry Shires was simply trying to solve a problem. In 1999, while preparing to hike the Pacific Crest Trail, Henry designed a lightweight shelter for himself. That idea would eventually become Tarptent, one of the original cottage gear companies and a brand that has helped influence backpacking shelter design for more than 20 years. In this episode of the Trailblazing Texas Podcast, I sit down with Tarptent founder Henry Shires to go all the way back to where it started. We talk about Henry’s introduction to hiking and backpacking, the shelter he built for his PCT journey, and the moment he realized other backpackers wanted what he had created. Henry shares what those early years of Tarptent looked like, the challenges of growing a small cottage company, and why Tarptent has intentionally remained relatively small even as the outdoor industry around it has changed. We also get deep into the world of shelter design, where ideas come from, balancing weight and durability, testing prototypes in real-world conditions, learning from designs that didn’t quite work, and figuring out when a shelter is finally ready to leave the drawing board and head into the backcountry. Having spent more than two decades in the industry, Henry also gives us his perspective on how backpacking has changed. We talk about the rise of ultralight gear, social media’s impact on the outdoor community, the growth of the cottage gear industry, and what he hopes never changes about backpacking. But perhaps my favorite part of the conversation is looking beyond the gear. For more than 20 years, Tarptent shelters have been carried on first backpacking trips, weekend adventures, long trails and thru-hikes around the world. Behind every one of those shelters is a story, and a memory made underneath it. So what does it mean to Henry knowing something he first designed for himself has become part of so many other people's adventures? And after more than 20 years of designing, building and questioning how things can be done better...what does he hope the legacy of Tarptent will ultimately be? This one is about innovation, taking chances, staying small, and the incredible things that can happen when a backpacker decides there has to be a better way.

Lydia and I (Franklin Mountains State Park pt 2)

Episode Artwork Photo by Chase A. Fountain. Shared courtesy of Lydia Pagel. A quote from Lydia Standing above us, above the build of our town, Mount Franklin is the landmark and the trademark of where we live. "A mountain," Carl Sandburg said, "is something that's fastened down, something you can count on.'' By that token, a mountain is a talisman in our hearts. In looking at Mount Franklin, up there, we lift our eyes toward the sky. - by Tom Lea. Episode Description Franklin Mountains State Park with Ranger Lydia — Part 2 | Trails, Desert Adventure & Protecting a Wild Landscape Part 2 takes us deeper into Franklin Mountains State Park as Ranger Lydia joins me again to talk about what it’s really like to explore one of the most unique landscapes in the Texas State Park system. We hit the trails, talking about some of the park’s most popular routes, where first-time visitors should start, and where experienced hikers can find a little more challenge and solitude. Lydia also shares what visitors need to know before hiking in the Chihuahuan Desert, especially when those West Texas temperatures start climbing. But hiking is only part of the story. We get into rock climbing and bouldering, mountain biking, wildlife and birding, camping beneath the West Texas sky, ranger-led programs, and some of the best times of year to experience the Franklin Mountains. Then we turn to something just as important as exploring the park: protecting it. Lydia talks about the challenges of managing recreation in such a fragile desert ecosystem, Leave No Trace issues like cutting switchbacks, conservation and restoration efforts, volunteer opportunities, and the balance between giving people access to these incredible mountains while preserving them for the future. We also look ahead at what could be next for Franklin Mountains State Park, and I give Lydia one final challenge: If someone has never visited Franklin Mountains State Park, what’s your pitch to get them there? If Part 1 introduced you to Lydia and the heart behind Franklin Mountains State Park, Part 2 is about getting out there and experiencing it. 🥾 Trails 🧗 Rock climbing & bouldering 🚵 Mountain biking 🦅 Wildlife & birding ⛺ Camping & stargazing 🌵 Desert hiking and Leave No Trace 🏔️ Conservation and the future of the park This is Franklin Mountains State Park. Luke and I (Trail Goods Co. pt2)

Message From the Host: One of my favorite parts of doing this podcast is getting to introduce you to the people behind the brands many of us trust on the trail. It's easy to see a product on a shelf or in a backpack and never think about the person who took the risk to create it. Luke's story is a reminder that every cottage brand starts with someone willing to chase an idea, solve a problem, and put their heart into building something for our community. I hope conversations like this inspire you to look beyond the logo and appreciate the people making a difference in the outdoors. As always, thank you for listening and for supporting the Trailblazing Texas Podcast. Every download, share, and recommendation helps me continue shining a light on the parks, trails, and small businesses that make our outdoor community so special. Episode Description: In Part 2 of my conversation with Luke from Trail Goods Co., we go beyond the products and dive into the journey of building a cottage brand from the ground up. Luke shares what it was like taking an idea and turning it into a growing company, the challenges that came with it, and the lessons he's learned along the way. We talk about how new products are developed, why customer feedback is so valuable, and what it's really like running a small business in the outdoor industry. We also spend plenty of time talking about one of my favorite backpacking topics, trail food. Luke shares what makes a great backcountry meal, common food planning mistakes hikers make, how his own approach to trail nutrition has evolved, and a few of his personal favorites... along with one meal he'll never carry again. One of the reasons I love featuring cottage brands on the Trailblazing Texas Podcast is because so much of the innovation in our outdoor community comes from passionate people willing to take a chance on an idea. These are the companies that listen to hikers, adapt, and continue pushing the industry forward. Luke is a perfect example of that spirit. We finish the episode by looking ahead to what's next for Trail Goods Co., discussing the future of the outdoor industry, and hearing what Luke hopes people will remember about the company years from now. Whether you're a backpacker looking for better trail meals, someone who loves supporting small businesses, or you've ever dreamed of building something of your own, I think you'll really enjoy this conversation.

Luke and I (Trail Goods Co. pt1)

Message From the Host: One of my favorite parts of hosting the Trailblazing Texas Podcast is getting the opportunity to introduce you to the people behind the gear and products that make our adventures possible. Cottage brands aren't backed by massive corporations, they're built by passionate people who saw a need, took a chance, and poured countless hours into creating something they truly believe in. All of the innovation in our hiking and backpacking community starts with cottage brands. They're often the first to experiment with new materials, rethink old designs, and create gear based on real-world experience on the trail. Their willingness to listen to customers and continually improve their products has helped shape the gear many of us use today. Every purchase, every share, and every recommendation makes a real difference to these small businesses. When you support a cottage brand, you're supporting families, innovation, and fellow outdoor enthusiasts who are investing their time, talent, and resources into making our community even better. I hope conversations like this not only help you discover great products, but also inspire you to support the people behind them. They are a huge part of what makes the backpacking community so special, and I'm honored to help share their stories.

    Wanda and I (pt 2)

Message From Wanda: If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that sometimes what we’re searching for is peace. I found mine in the quiet miles, under the open skies, surrounded by God’s creation, and putting one foot in front of the other. And if my story encourages someone to get outside, believe in themselves, and find their own peace along the way, then every mile has been worth it. Episode Description: In Part 2 of my conversation with Wanda, we move beyond the miles and into the mindset that has kept her exploring, growing, and embracing adventure through every season of life. We talk about overcoming fear, working through self-doubt, knowing when to push forward and when turning back is the smartest decision. Wanda shares how she prepares for each trip, the hikes that have left the biggest mark on her life, and why some of the quietest miles often become the most meaningful. This episode is also packed with encouragement for anyone who's ever thought, "Maybe I'm too old," or "Maybe I can't do this." Wanda offers honest advice for women considering backpacking, talks about the importance of community, and shares the habits that have helped her stay active for years. Most of all, we explore what the trail has taught her about aging, resilience, and living with purpose. Her story is a reminder that adventure doesn't have an expiration date, it simply evolves with us. If you've ever needed a little inspiration to take that first step, chase a new goal, or believe you're capable of more than you think, this conversation is for you. Nace and I (Texas Lillie and her Texas State Park Quest pt 2)

A message from Nace: This episode is dedicated to all of the amazing volunteers and staff at Dallas Animal Services. Lillie's rescue story was only made possible by a volunteer that shared photos and videos that another volunteer and a foster used to make the decision to foster her. None of that would have been possible had a animal control officer not rescued her from the street. Once in the shelter, she was given a full and complete medical check up and provided care through a upper respiratory infection and heartworm treatment. There was also all of the kennel techs that made sure her bowls were never empty and her bedding was clean and comfortable. Literally dozens of people had a hand in Lillie's rescue journey and they provide the same lifesaving efforts for each and every pet in their care. Episode Description: What starts as a hike can sometimes become something much bigger. In Part 2 of my conversation with Nace, we dive deeper into the incredible bond between a hiker and his dog, Lillie. From learning the realities of hiking with a canine companion to navigating rescue, recovery, trust, and growth, this episode explores the lessons that can only be learned when every mile is shared. Nace shares Lillie's story, how she came into his life, the challenges they faced together, and how that relationship evolved into a mission to experience every Texas State Park. Along the way, we discuss pacing, awareness, responsibility, resilience, and the unique perspective that dogs bring to the trail. Nace and I (Texas Lillie and her Texas State Park Quest pt 1)

Message from the Host: Sometimes the outdoors isn't just where we go for adventure, it's where we learn who we are. I hope this conversation reminds you to get outside, try something new, and embrace the journey, even when things don't go according to plan. Happy trails! Episode Description: In this first part of my conversation with Nace, we dive into the experiences that helped shape his love for hiking, backpacking, and the outdoors. We talk about how he got started on the trail, the lessons learned from mistakes along the way, and why spending time outside has become such an important part of his life. From memorable adventures to hard-earned trail wisdom, Nace shares the moments that helped build his passion for exploring Texas and beyond. We also discuss the value of getting outside, what hiking and backpacking have taught us, and why the outdoors continue to call us back, one trail at a time. This episode is a fun and honest conversation between two hikers who know that sometimes the best stories come from the mistakes, unexpected challenges, and lessons learned along the way. And this is just the beginning. In Part 2, we'll dive into the incredible story of Lillie, Nace's rescue dog and hiking partner, and his mission to visit every Texas State Park with her by his side. So lace up your boots, hit the trail, and join us for Part 1 of this great conversation with Nace.

Cameron and I (Lone Star Hiking Trail Thru-Hike pt.2)

Message From the Host: This episode means a lot to me because the Lone Star Hiking Trail challenged me mentally and physically more than I expected. Somewhere between the pine corridors, the long miles, and the exhaustion, this trail became less about hiking and more about simply refusing to quit. I’m grateful to Cameron for taking on this adventure with me and for being willing to share both the highs and lows honestly. The LSHT may not get the attention of bigger trails, but it absolutely earns your respect. If you’ve ever thought about hiking the Lone Star Hiking Trail, I hope this episode motivates you to experience it for yourself. Episode Description: Four days. Roughly 100 miles. Endless pine corridors. Questionable decisions. Trail math that stopped making sense somewhere around mile 94. In this part 2 of our thru-hike of the Lone Star Hiking Trail, Cameron and I sit down and unpack the full reality of our Lone Star Hiking Trail thru-hike, from the planning phase sitting at home with maps and cache spreadsheets… to the moments on trail where everything started to hurt and the mental battle truly began. We dive deep into the strategy behind the hike, including how we approached water caches, campsite selection, daily mileage goals, and balancing efficiency versus leaving ourselves room for things to go sideways. We break down the original plan compared to the actual miles we ended up hiking each day, what worked better than expected, and what we would immediately change if we attempted it again. This episode also gets brutally honest about the realities of long-distance hiking in East Texas. We talk about the monotony of the pine corridors, the physical toll of pushing bigger miles, the mental lows that hit deep into the trip, and the moments where quitting quietly starts creeping into your mind. For me, one of those moments came around mile 94 when I realized my brain had convinced me we were farther along than we actually were. Along the way, we discuss the gear that saved us, the gear that disappointed us, food strategies, foot care mistakes, camp life, and how we kept each other moving when exhaustion started taking over. We also reflect on the moments that now stand out most from the couch, the highs, the lows, the laughter, the suffering, and the strange way a trail changes once you’ve completed it. Most importantly, this episode is about what the Lone Star Hiking Trail really is: not just a trail through the Texas piney woods, but a mental challenge that tests patience, resilience, adaptability, and your ability to keep moving forward when everything in your body says stop. If you’ve ever considered hiking the LSHT, attempted it yourself, or just wondered what a four-day push across the longest hiking trail in Texas actually feels like… this episode is for you. Welcome to the suffering. Welcome to the laughs. Welcome to the Lone Star Hiking Trail.
