Ep 215 - How to Build an Emotionally Intelligent Workplace Culture That Creates Stronger Leaders

What if emotional intelligence goes beyond leadership competency, and extends well into cultural capability? We often tell leaders they need to develop emotional intelligence: self-awareness, empathy, emotional regulation, communication, and the ability to navigate difficult conversations. Which is all well and great, but there's a problem with treating emotional intelligence as an individual skill. You can teach someone how to regulate their emotions, listen more effectively, and have better conversations - but if the culture around them rewards reactivity, punishes vulnerability, avoids conflict, or doesn't model accountability, those skills can only take them so far. In this episode of Get Jasched, we explore why organisations need to intentionally cultivate workplace cultures where emotional intelligence is modelled, practised, reinforced, and rewarded. We'll unpack what an emotionally intelligent workplace actually looks like, why psychological safety isn't the same as avoiding difficult conversations, and how organisations can use culture to develop stronger, more self-aware and more effective leaders at every level. In this episode, we'll explore: Why emotional intelligence is more than an individual leadership skill How workplace culture influences the way leaders respond under pressure Why leadership development can't happen effectively in an emotionally unintelligent environment What emotionally intelligent workplace cultures actually look like How organisations can intentionally cultivate emotional intelligence The role of modelling, psychological safety, accountability, and feedback Why emotional intelligence can strengthen leadership capability across an entire organisation. If you're a leader, founder, HR professional or people leader thinking about how to build stronger leadership capability and a healthier, higher-performing workplace culture, this episode is for you. Ep 214 - Why Visible Leadership Is a Hallmark of High-Performing Organisations

What do the organisations recognised as the best places to work have in common? According to insights from the Australian Financial Review's 2025 Best Places to Work report, visible leadership was a common theme among the top-performing organisations. But what does “visible leadership” actually mean? It's not simply being seen around the office, sending regular CEO updates or appearing at the occasional town hall. True leadership visibility is about creating a sense of connection, accessibility, context and trust, so employees understand who is leading, what matters to them, why decisions are being made, and how their own voices are being heard. In this episode of Get Jasched, Jess explores why visible leadership matters for employee engagement, psychological safety, workplace wellbeing, organisational culture and performance, particularly as organisations grow and layers of hierarchy create greater distance between leaders and their people. We'll unpack: What visible leadership actually looks like in practice Why leadership communication isn't necessarily the same as leadership visibility Why visibility becomes more important as organisations grow How leaders can create genuine proximity without micromanaging Why explaining decisions can build trust — even when people disagree with them The connection between visible leadership, wellbeing and psychological safety Why employees don't just need to see their leaders — they need to know their leaders can see them Practical ways leaders can become more visible, accessible and responsive Your people need you to be a leader they can actually experience. And if culture is what people experience every day, leadership visibility might be one of the most important - and most overlooked - ways leaders shape organisational culture. Ep 213 - Mindfulness Doesn't Mean Staying Calm All the Time: How Mindful Leadership Helps You Respond Instead of React

What if mindfulness isn't actually about feeling calm? Mindfulness is often presented as a way to become more peaceful, relaxed and emotionally unbothered. But that's not what mindfulness really requires, and it's certainly not what effective mindful leadership looks like. In this episode of Get Jasched, Jess explores why you don't have to be calm to be mindful. You can be frustrated, anxious, angry, overwhelmed or under pressure and still practise mindfulness. The difference is what happens next. Rather than trying to eliminate uncomfortable emotions, mindfulness can help you notice what's happening in your thoughts, emotions and body before automatically reacting. That awareness creates a valuable choice point between what you experience and how you respond. Jess explores: What mindfulness actually means beyond "being calm" The difference between emotional regulation and emotional suppression Why leaders don't need to appear calm and unbothered all the time How mindfulness can help you respond rather than react under pressure The role of embodied awareness in mindful leadership Why difficult emotions can contain useful information How to recognise when you're becoming emotionally activated Why mindfulness sometimes makes you more aware before it makes things feel easier A simple Notice → Name → Choose practice you can use in moments of pressure. Mindful leadership isn't about becoming the calmest person in the room. It's about developing the awareness and capacity to choose how you show up, even when you're not calm. You don't have to control your emotional experience to lead intentionally. You have to become aware enough to work with it. Ep 212 - Your Workplace Culture Isn't What You Say It Is (It's What Your Team Experiences)

What if your workplace culture isn't what you think it is? Many organisations proudly describe themselves as people-first, values-led or committed to employee wellbeing. But workplace culture is defined by what your people experience every day, not by what's written on your website, your values statement, or the posters on the office wall. In this episode of Get Jasched, Jess Jasch explores why workplace culture is built through behaviours rather than branding, how leadership actions shape organisational culture, and why the moments that matter most often happen when things don't go to plan. You'll discover: Why culture is created through everyday leadership behaviours. The difference between organisational values and lived employee experience. How promotions, feedback, conflict and recognition reinforce workplace culture. Why leaders should focus less on what they say and more on what they consistently do. Practical questions to help assess whether your culture is intentional—or simply happening by default. If you're a business owner, executive, HR leader or people manager looking to create a healthier, higher-performing workplace, this episode will challenge the way you think about culture and provide practical insights you can start applying immediately. Ep 211 - When a Workplace Wellbeing Workshop Is Enough, And When Your Organisation Needs More

Your organisation has rising stress, disengagement, burnout or communication challenges... so someone suggests booking a wellbeing workshop. But will a single workshop actually improve workplace culture? In this episode of Get Jasched, we one of the biggest misconceptions in workplace wellbeing: expecting a workshop to solve systemic organisational challenges. You'll learn: When wellbeing workshops deliver real value The difference between building awareness and creating lasting behaviour change How to recognise when your organisation needs a broader wellbeing strategy Why leadership, systems and culture matter more than one-off initiatives How to make your investment in employee wellbeing more effective. This isn't an argument against workshops - in fact, I loved facilitating them. It's about understanding what workshops are designed to do, where they create the greatest impact, and when deeper organisational change is needed. If you're a business owner, leader, HR professional or people and culture practitioner looking to improve employee wellbeing, engagement and organisational performance, this episode will help you invest your time and budget where they'll make the biggest difference. Ep 210 - High-Performance Leadership Requires Recovery (Here's Why)

Most leaders know how to push harder, because we're constantly told to. Far fewer have figured out how to recover well. In this episode, I'm exploring one of the most overlooked leadership skills: recovery. Not just taking time off, but intentionally creating the mental, emotional and physical space that allows you to think clearly, lead effectively and sustain high performance over time. We often celebrate busyness as a sign of commitment, yet elite athletes understand something many workplaces have forgotten: performance improves because of recovery. Recovery is a strength. I unpack the difference between rest and recovery, why they're not the same thing, and how deliberate recovery helps improve decision-making, resilience, creativity, emotional regulation and long-term leadership effectiveness. We also explore: Why burnout is easier to prevent than recover from. What elite athletes can teach us about leadership performance. The different types of recovery (physical, mental, emotional and purposeful). How to recognise your own early warning signs before burnout. Why leaders need to model recovery for their teams. Creating your own "mental third space" for sustainable performance. If you've ever told yourself, "I'll rest when this project is finished," this conversation is for you (because I've lived it - a LOT). Ep 209 - The Productivity Trap: Why Constant Self-Improvement Is Making Us Miserable

Have we become so obsessed with self-improvement that we've forgotten how to simply enjoy life? In this episode of Get Jasched, Jess reflects on finishing her Master's in Applied Positive Psychology, finalising her upcoming book, and the unexpected lesson that emerged from years of intense learning and development: growth isn't the only thing that matters. From productivity culture and hustle mentality to the pressure to optimise every spare minute, this conversation explores what happens when personal development becomes the goal instead of a tool. Jess challenges the idea that every book must teach a lesson, every walk must include a podcast, and every hobby must somehow contribute to career success. Drawing on themes of wellbeing, creativity, mindfulness, and human flourishing, this episode is a reminder that fiction, art, music, storytelling, and simple enjoyment aren't distractions from a meaningful life, they're often part of what makes life meaningful in the first place. If you've ever felt guilty for resting, reading a novel, watching a show, or doing something purely because you enjoy it, this episode is for you. In this episode: The hidden downside of constant self-improvement Why productivity culture can undermine wellbeing The value of fiction, art, and creativity in personal growth How enjoyment contributes to resilience and flourishing Why not everything needs to be monetised or optimised Creating balance between development and living. Ep 208 - Why Multitasking Is Draining Your Energy and Focus

Ever finish a workday feeling exhausted, despite not making meaningful progress on the things that matter most? The problem might not be your workload. In this episode of Get Jasched, Jess explores the concept of attention residue - a phenomenon identified by researcher Sophie Leroy that explains why constantly switching between emails, meetings, messages, and projects can leave us feeling mentally drained and less effective. Drawing on both research and personal experience, Jess unpacks: What attention residue is and why it matters Why multitasking often feels productive but isn't How task switching impacts energy, focus, decision-making, and wellbeing The connection between attention management and leadership effectiveness Why deep thinking requires uninterrupted space Practical strategies to reduce mental fatigue and improve focus. Whether you're a leader, business owner, professional, or simply someone feeling overwhelmed by competing demands, this episode offers a powerful reminder that managing your attention may be more important than managing your time. Ep 207 - Delayed Gratification, Motivation, and the Art of Keeping Going

We live in a world that rewards immediacy. Instant messages. Instant updates. Instant feedback. So what happens when the things that matter most take months - or even years - to come to life? In this episode, Jess reflects on completing her Master's degree, finalising her upcoming book, and navigating the reality of long-term projects that require faith, patience, and persistence long before the rewards arrive. This conversation explores: • Why delayed gratification is becoming a lost skill in modern life • How to stay motivated when progress feels invisible • The importance of creating meaningful milestones along the way • Why trusting the process is so difficult when you're in the middle of it • Practical ways to recognise progress before the finish line Whether you're building a business, studying, changing careers, writing a book, improving your wellbeing, or simply trying to stay consistent with something important to you, this episode is a reminder that progress isn't always obvious while it's happening. Ep 206 - Removing Barriers to Movement: Disability, Exercise & The Power of Listening with Sam Godbold

What if movement wasn’t about perfection, aesthetics, or “gym culture”, but about improving someone’s quality of life? In this episode, Jess sits down with Sam Godbold, senior exercise physiologist and clinic manager at Hiya Health, to talk about disability, chronic illness, exercise, communication, and the importance of removing barriers to movement. Together, they unpack: Why exercise looks different for everybody The emotional and psychological barriers people experience around movement How disability, injury, and chronic illness can impact identity and confidence Why listening matters more than assuming The role of communication in healthcare and wellbeing How small, consistent progress creates meaningful change Why movement should feel accessible, not intimidating This conversation explores exercise - and even human connection that we can all take note of - far beyond fitness culture. It’s about helping people reconnect with their bodies, their confidence, and their lives, in ways that feel supportive, realistic, and human. Whether you work in healthcare, leadership, wellbeing, or simply struggle with your own relationship to movement, this episode offers an incredibly grounded and compassionate perspective. Ep 205 - You Don’t Have the Same 24 Hours: Energy Management, Burnout & The Truth About “Busy”

If you’ve ever felt like you’re constantly trying to catch up, squeeze more in, or somehow “optimise” every second of your day… this episode is for you. In this conversation, Jess unpacks the pressure business owners and leaders place on themselves around productivity, time management, and hustle culture - and why the idea that “we all have the same 24 hours” is simply not true. After navigating an intensely full season of life, Jess shares a more honest conversation around energy management, burnout, neurodivergence, boundaries, and understanding how you actually function. This episode explores: Why time management isn’t the real issue The difference between being busy and being effective How your energy impacts leadership and workplace culture Why “free days” can sometimes feel harder than structured ones The role of routine, flexibility, and self-awareness Practical ways to audit your energy and work more sustainably If you’re exhausted from trying to do everything well, this episode offers a more compassionate and realistic way forward - without sacrificing ambition. Ep 204 - Why your brain fixates on the negative (and how to use this in work and life)

Your brain is doing exactly what it’s designed to do, even when it sometimes feels a little broken. In this episode, I’m unpacking something that affects all of us: negative bias - why one awkward moment, one piece of feedback, or one “off” interaction can feel louder than everything that went right. We’ll talk about: Why your brain naturally focuses on the negative How this shows up at work, in leadership, and in everyday life The hidden impact on confidence, decision-making, and team culture Simple, practical ways to rebalance your thinking (without toxic positivity) This isn’t about forcing yourself to “think positive” or ignoring what’s not working - we don't do that around here. It’s about understanding how your mind works so you can create a more accurate, and supportive, perspective. If you’ve ever overthought a conversation from years ago, fixated on one mistake, or felt like the negative just sticks more… this one’s for you. Ep 201 - Why Great Leaders Encourage Questions: Building a Culture of Clarity, Trust & Performance

What kind of culture are you creating when someone asks a question? In this episode of Get Jasched, Jess Jasch explores a critical (and often overlooked) leadership skill: creating a workplace culture where questions are welcomed, not judged, dismissed, or punished. Because when people don’t feel safe to ask questions, they stay silent… and they also second-guess, make avoidable mistakes, lose confidence, and ultimately underperform. Jess breaks down why encouraging clarifying questions leads to stronger comprehension, better decision-making, and more empowered teams, and how leaders can unintentionally shut this down, especially under stress. Inside this episode, you’ll learn: Why psychological safety starts with how leaders respond to questions The hidden cost of a “no questions” culture (time, errors, morale) The difference between lack of initiative vs. genuine clarification How stress and nervous system dysregulation impact leadership communication Practical ways to create a culture of curiosity, clarity, and trust This episode is a must-listen for leaders, founders, and team managers who want to build resilient, high-performing teams—without burnout or miscommunication. 200 episodes. Nearly 6 years. And a whole lot of lessons in between. In this milestone episode of Get Jasched, Jess reflects on what it really takes to build something meaningful over time, without burning out, overthinking, or chasing the “perfect” strategy. Ep 199 - Proactive Mindfulness for Leaders: How to Build Resilience Before Stress Hits

Most leaders only turn to mindfulness when stress is already overwhelming. But what if the real power of mindfulness isn’t reactive, but more in a preventative approach? In this episode of Get Jasched, Jess explores the science and lived experience behind proactive mindfulness, and why practicing before stress hits can fundamentally change how you lead, decide, and respond under pressure. Drawing on research from high-stress environments (including Defence settings), Jess breaks down: Why mindfulness is more effective when practiced proactively, not just in crisis How consistent practices like breathwork and awareness training improve emotional regulation The difference between experiencing stress and being overwhelmed by it A personal story of anxiety and how proactive tools changed the response entirely Simple ways to integrate mindfulness into your daily life without needing hours of meditation This episode is a grounded, practical conversation for leaders, business owners, and high-performers who want to build resilience, not just recover from burnout. Plus, Jess shares two ways you can go deeper: Get Jasched Meditation+ (weekly guided practices designed for busy minds). Ep 197 - How to Reduce Mental Load and Overwhelm: Simple Systems That Actually Work

We talk a lot about stress, overwhelm, and “having too much on”… but rarely do we talk about the small, practical systems that actually reduce the mental load behind it all. In this episode, I’m breaking down one simple shift that can create more ease in your day—without needing more time, more money, or more productivity hacks. From creating repeatable routines (yes, even something as basic as laundry) to using reminders and simple structures that support your brain instead of overloading it, this is about working with your mind—not against it. We explore: Why mental load—not just “busyness”—drives overwhelm How small systems reduce decision fatigue and stress Practical ways to stop keeping everything in your head Why structure can actually create more freedom (not less) How to build routines that support you, even if they don’t come naturally Whether you’re a business owner, a leader, or just someone who feels like your brain is constantly “on,” this episode will help you simplify, organise, and create more ease in your day-to-day life. Plus, I share a few very real, lived examples (not perfection—just what actually works). Ep 196 - Why Leaders Struggle to Implement Wellbeing (And the First Step to Start)

Most leaders know workplace wellbeing matters. They talk about it. They believe in it. They want better resilience, healthier teams, and less stress at work. But when it comes to actually implementing wellbeing practices, many leaders feel stuck. The goal feels clear, but the path there can feel overwhelming. In this episode of Get Jasched, Jess Jasch explores why wellbeing initiatives in leadership often stall before they begin, and what leaders can do to break that cycle. Drawing on principles of mindfulness, self-awareness, and emotional intelligence, Jess unpacks why effective leadership wellbeing always starts with one thing: how leaders manage themselves. In this episode, you’ll learn: Why workplace wellbeing can feel like a “mountain” leaders struggle to climb The difference between knowing wellbeing matters and actually implementing it Why self-awareness and self-management are foundational leadership skills How mindfulness and breathwork practices help leaders recognise stress earlier Why willingness matters more than readiness when it comes to change The power of taking one small, intentional step instead of trying to overhaul everything Because better leadership doesn’t come from pushing through stress harder. It comes from developing the awareness and practices that allow leaders to regulate themselves — and create healthier environments for the people around them. If you’ve ever felt like you know wellbeing matters but struggle to start making meaningful changes, this episode will help you rethink the first step.
