    A Case That Resists Easy Answers | Christa Pike

    Christa Pike was 18 years old when she told a friend at the Knoxville Job Corps Center that she planned to kill another student. When asked why, she simply said she felt mean that day. Less than two days later, 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer was found dead near an abandoned steam plant. Christa had lured her away under the pretense of making peace, but she arrived carrying a box cutter and a miniature meat cleaver. Before leaving, Christa removed a fragment of Colleen’s skull and carried it back to the Job Corps Center. She showed it to other students, spoke openly about the killing, and later appeared at the crime scene while investigators were still working. Christa was convicted of premeditated first-degree murder and became the youngest woman sentenced to death in the United States during the modern death penalty era. After 30 years on Tennessee’s death row, she is scheduled to be executed on September 30, 2026. But Christa entered the world with fetal alcohol-related brain damage. She endured severe abuse beginning in early childhood and lived with untreated bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. None of that makes her innocent. It also does not erase what happened to Colleen.     She Had Already Won and Killed Anyway | Frances Zaayer

    Frances Zaayer spent a year and a half terrorizing the family across the street, but the Scotts were not strangers. They were the same family who had taken her in as a teenager and welcomed her into their home again decades later. What began as a property dispute became a campaign of surveillance, false accusations, repeated 911 calls, racist abuse, and staged injuries. Her accusations eventually worked. Shawna Scott was arrested, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree assault, and received probation. Frances had already won. On May 26, 2018, she crossed the street with a gun anyway. She shot Shawna in the face and killed David Scott while he was installing security cameras to protect his family.     The Fake Attorney Who Stole From the Living and the Dead | Carrie Phenix

    Carrie Phenix presented herself as an attorney who handled wills, trusts, and estates. In reality, her name was Caroline Herrling, she had no law license, and the legal authority she displayed existed almost entirely on forged paper. Using fake identities, counterfeit wills, impostors, and practiced signatures, Carrie stole nearly $3.9 million from vulnerable people, including the elderly, the isolated, and the dead. Then she and her accomplice allegedly found Charles Wilding dead inside his home. Instead of contacting authorities, they kept him alive on paper, took control of his estate, and disposed of his remains in San Francisco Bay. Carrie received 20 years in federal prison for fraud,, but she was never charged with murder.     Eleonor Alejandra Marín Mendoza: The Stolen Newborn

    Eleonor Alejandra Marín Mendoza spent months convincing her husband and family that she was pregnant. She gained weight, altered medical documents, produced fake ultrasound images and celebrated at a baby shower for a child she knew she was not carrying. But a fabricated pregnancy came with a very real deadline. On June 17, 2009, Ale entered the maternity ward of Hospital General de México carrying an empty department-store bag.     On the evening of January 24, 2023, Patrick Clancy left his Duxbury, Massachusetts, home to pick up medicine and dinner. He was gone for less than 30 minutes. When he returned, he found his wife, Lindsay, catastrophically injured outside their home. Inside the basement, he found their three young children. There is no mystery about who caused their deaths. The question now before a Plymouth County jury is whether Lindsay Clancy was criminally responsible when it happened.     The Susan Lorincz Case: Fear, Bias, and the Door That Changed Everything

    On June 2, 2023, in Ocala, Florida, a long-running neighborhood dispute ended in tragedy when Susan Lorincz fired a single shot through her locked front door, killing her neighbor, Ajike “AJ” Owens, while AJ’s young son stood beside her. In this episode of GBRLIFE of Crimes, we examine the Susan Lorincz case beyond the headline. This is not just a story about one fatal shot.     On July 31, 2022, 17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla drove a Toyota Camry into a brick wall in Strongsville, Ohio at 100 miles per hour. Inside the car were her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and their friend, Davion Flanagan. Both were killed. Mackenzie survived. At first, it looked like a tragic accident.
