Melusine The French Water-Fairy Whose Curse Built a Royal Dynasty
Every Saturday, a woman locks her door. Her husband swore he'd never open it. This week on Freaky Folklore, we dive into the legend of Melusine, the medieval French water-fairy cursed to become a serpent from the waist down every Saturday. Melusine built castles overnight, bore ten sons marked by her supernatural blood, and became the folkloric founding mother of the House of Lusignan. Her descendants ruled as kings of Cyprus and Armenia. Luxembourg, the Plantagenets, and other royal houses claimed her too. Then her husband broke his promise. In this episode: a story of the stonecutter who came to tear down Melusine's castle, followed by the real history behind the legend. That includes Jean d'Arras's 1393 romance, Geoffrey Great-Tooth, the Château de Lusignan, the Luxembourg Melusina, and the twin-tailed mermaid that still turns up in pop culture. Trows - The Shetland Creatures That Steal Fiddlers and Babies
Deep in the peat hills of Shetland, the old folk won't cross the green mounds after dark. Those hills belong to the trows: small, grey, limping hill-folk descended from the Norse trolls. They'll steal a fiddler for a night that lasts a hundred years, and they'll trade a healthy baby for a sickly changeling. In this episode of Freaky Folklore, we go under the hill. First comes an original story. A wind-farm technician picks up a fiddle tune in the vibrations of the ground beneath a haunted mound. It's the unfinished song his father was playing the night he vanished, thirty years ago at Yule. Then we dig into the real Shetland and Orkney legends behind the trows: Keep a knife by the door. Keep a light in the window. And if you hear music coming out of the ground, keep walking. #Trows #ScottishFolklore #FreakyFolklore #Shetland #Orkney #Folklore #Changeling #NorseMythology #ScaryStories #HorrorPodcast #Eeriecast EXPLORE MORE SPINE-CHILLING CONTENT: Freaky Folklore: https://www.eeriecast.com/podcasts/freaky-folklore Carman's Crypt (Original Horror): https://www.carman-carrion.com/ Deadly Intent (True Crime): https://www.carman-carrion.com/ Destination Terror: https://www.eeriecast.com/podcasts/destination-terror SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Me a Coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/carmancarrion CONNECT WITH CARMAN: Website: https://www.carman-carrion.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@CarmanCarrion YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@FreakyFolklore Twitter/X: https://x.com/CarmanCarrion Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/carmancarrion/ SUBSCRIBE & REVIEW: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0uiX155WEJnN7QVRfo3aQY iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/freaky-folklore/id1550361184 Your support helps bring you more terrifying tales. A Case from My Other Show: The Sodder Children
On Christmas Eve, 1945, the Sodder family's home in Fayetteville, West Virginia, burned to the ground. Five of the ten children were never found. No remains were recovered, and the case was closed almost as quickly as it was opened. For decades, their parents refused to believe their children had died that night. This is a preview from Deadly Intent, Carman's true crime psychology podcast. Every episode goes beyond what happened to ask why: what was going on in someone's mind that let them do the unthinkable, and what the evidence still leaves unanswered. New episodes of Deadly Intent drop every Wednesday. Search "Deadly Intent" wherever you listen, hit follow, and start with the full episode on the Sodder Children. Because intent doesn't lie. Mami Wata — The Water Spirit Worshipped and Feared Across Africa
She's been called a goddess. A demon. A healer. A thief of husbands, minds, and sometimes lives. Across an entire continent — and every shore the diaspora ever touched — Mami Wata has been worshipped in shrines and feared on riverbanks for centuries, and she is not finished collecting. This week on Freaky Folklore, we're wading into the legend of the Mother of Water: her murky, tangled origins stretching from indigenous river goddesses like Yemoja and Ogbuide, to a 19th-century German print that accidentally became her global face. We cover her powers, her price, the rules that keep her happy, and the ones that don't — plus a story about a woman who broke one rule on a riverbank at midnight, and the thing she saw beneath the surface that she's never told a soul about. Got a folklore legend you want covered? Drop it in the comments. #MamiWata #FreakyFolklore #AfricanFolklore #WaterSpirit #Folklore #Mythology #HorrorPodcast #TrueHorrorStories #Cryptid #Paranormal #Eeriecast #WestAfricanMythology #Yemoja #FolkHorror #ScaryStories #Podcast #MermaidLore #StorytellingPodcast EXPLORE MORE SPINE-CHILLING CONTENT: Freaky Folklore: https://www.eeriecast.com/podcasts/freaky-folklore Carman's Crypt (Original Horror): https://www.carman-carrion.com/ Deadly Intent (True Crime): https://www.carman-carrion.com/ Destination Terror: https://www.eeriecast.com/podcasts/destination-terror SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Me a Coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/carmancarrion CONNECT WITH CARMAN: Website: https://www.carman-carrion.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@CarmanCarrion YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@FreakyFolklore Twitter/X: https://x.com/CarmanCarrion Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/carmancarrion/ SUBSCRIBE & REVIEW: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0uiX155WEJnN7QVRfo3aQY iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/freaky-folklore/id1550361184 Your support helps bring you more terrifying tales. TENGU – Japan's Prideful Mountain Demon That Punishes You for Whistling in the Dark
Deep in the cedar mountains north of Kyoto lives a creature that has spent over a thousand years being both worshipped and feared — sometimes in the same breath. The Tengu can be the greatest swordmaster you'll ever train under, or the reason you vanish off a mountain trail and turn up days later on a rooftop with no memory of how you got there. There's only one rule that decides which one you get: respect the mountain, or don't whistle in the dark. Tonight on Freaky Folklore, we trace the Tengu from its origins as a corrupted Chinese meteor-omen to one of Japan's most iconic yokai — the red-faced, long-nosed mountain demon blamed for centuries of real disappearances known as tengu-kakushi. Along the way, we follow a search-and-rescue volunteer whose eleven years of training and standard-issue whistle mean absolutely nothing to a mountain that's been enforcing its own rules a lot longer than he's been alive. We cover the Tengu's origins, its two forms, its supernatural powers, the traditional defenses against it, and exactly what you're supposed to do the moment you feel something pacing you in the treeline. If tonight's episode hit that "humans are the real monsters" nerve, check out my other show, Deadly Intent, where I dig into the psychology of real killers. And if you want brand-new horror built from scratch instead of pulled from history, Carman's Crypt has a new original story every week. The Chindi of the Diné - What the Dead Leave Behind
When a person dies, the Diné believe the good in them moves on — and everything else stays behind. It gathers in that last breath, steps out of the body, and waits. It's called the chindi, and the wise thing, the safe thing, is to leave the dead alone: their homes, their names, the things buried with them. Wade Corliss dug where he was warned not to. He carried something home from a death hogan out in the red-rock country — and it followed him. This week on Freaky Folklore, we walk carefully into a living Diné tradition to talk about ghost sickness, whirlwinds that turn the wrong way, and the price of taking what was never yours. Leave the dead alone. Some of them don't stay that way. 🎧 Part of the Eeriecast Network — eeriecast.com #FreakyFolklore #Chindi #NavajoFolklore #Diné #GhostSickness #Folklore #FolkloreHorror #ScaryStories #HorrorPodcast #Paranormal #Creepy #Eeriecast #Southwest #FourCorners #TrueHorror #HauntedHistory #PodcastCommunity EXPLORE MORE SPINE-CHILLING CONTENT: Freaky Folklore: https://www.eeriecast.com/podcasts/freaky-folklore Carman's Crypt (Original Horror): https://www.carman-carrion.com/ Deadly Intent (True Crime): https://www.carman-carrion.com/ Destination Terror: https://www.eeriecast.com/podcasts/destination-terror SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Me a Coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/carmancarrion CONNECT WITH CARMAN: Website: https://www.carman-carrion.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@CarmanCarrion YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@FreakyFolklore Twitter/X: https://x.com/CarmanCarrion Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/carmancarrion/ SUBSCRIBE& REVIEW: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0uiX155WEJnN7QVRfo3aQY iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/freaky-folklore/id1550361184 Yoursupport helps bring you more terrifying tales. LOCH NESS MONSTER – The Dark Folklore the Postcard Hides
Scotland's most famous cryptid has her face on a shortbread tin — but the folklore underneath is one of the deadliest water legends in all of Europe, and it doesn't begin in 1933 with a grainy photograph. It begins in the year 565, with a burial. In this episode of Freaky Folklore, we drag Nessie out of the gift shop and back into the black water where she came from: the deepest, coldest, most lightless loch in Britain. We get into the 1,400-year-old account of Saint Columba and the "water beast" that had already killed a man before he ever reached the shore. We uncover the each-uisge — the Highland water horse that lures you close, fuses to your skin, drags you under, and leaves only your liver floating back to shore by morning. We expose the beloved "Surgeon's Photograph" for the revenge hoax it always was. And then I tell you an original story about a boy, a brother, and a warm, calm, silent night on the loch in the winter of 1889 — and the one thing the postcards will never tell you about what's waiting down there. Turn the lights off. Just… not near the water. #LochNessMonster #Folklore #HorrorPodcast #Nessie #Cryptid #ScottishFolklore #FreakyFolklore #Kelpie #Mythology #FolkloreHorror #ScaryStories #Legends EXPLORE MORE SPINE-CHILLING CONTENT: Freaky Folklore: https://www.eeriecast.com/podcasts/freaky-folklore Carman's Crypt (Original Horror): https://www.carman-carrion.com/ Deadly Intent (True Crime): https://www.carman-carrion.com/ Destination Terror: https://www.eeriecast.com/podcasts/destination-terror ________________________________________ SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Me a Coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/carmancarrion ________________________________________ CONNECT WITH CARMAN: Website: https://www.carman-carrion.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@CarmanCarrion YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@FreakyFolklore Twitter/X: https://x.com/CarmanCarrion Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/carmancarrion/ ________________________________________ SUBSCRIBE& REVIEW: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0uiX155WEJnN7QVRfo3aQY iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/freaky-folklore/id1550361184 Your support helps bring you more terrifying tales. ________________________________________ DISCOVER MORE HORROR: http://eeriecast.com/ https://www.carman-carrion.com/ ________________________________________ MUSIC CREDITS: Music and sound effects provided by: ElevenLabs Learn more about your ad choices. Madam Koi Koi – The Ghost in the Red High Heels
There's a rule whispered from senior girls to juniors in Nigerian boarding schools, passed on in the dark after the matron locks the doors and carries the only key home: if you wake in the night and hear the slow click of heels down the corridor — koi, koi, koi — you do not move, you do not call out, and whatever you do, you never open your eyes to look. Because once there was a teacher who loved her red high heels more than any student in her care, and death only made her crueler. This week on Freaky Folklore, we walk into the dormitory where she still paces the halls, and we find out exactly what happens to the girls who dare to look. Beyond the ghost story, we dig into where Madam Koi Koi really comes from — a thoroughly modern haunting born inside Nigeria's federal unity schools of the 1960s, where hundreds of children were locked away overnight under adults who answered to no one after dark. We trace her tangled origins across every version of the legend: the vain and vicious teacher, the eardrum she burst, the car that struck her down, the students who took justice into their own hands, and the Ghanaian "Madam Moke" sealed in a closet. Monster or victim, wearing the very same red shoes — because maybe the truest thing about any ghost story is that it depends entirely on who survives to tell it. So tuck in your mosquito net, keep your feet under the sheet, and remember: don't run, don't scream, and don't look. #FreakyFolklore #MadamKoiKoi #NigerianFolklore #Horror #HorrorPodcast #GhostStories #Folklore #TrueHorror #ScaryStories #BoardingSchoolHorror #AfricanFolklore #Creepy #Paranormal #Urbanlegend #KoiKoi #EeriecastNetwork #HauntedSchool #Nigeria #GhostStory #HorrorCommunity EXPLORE MORE SPINE-CHILLING CONTENT: Freaky Folklore: https://www.eeriecast.com/podcasts/freaky-folklore Carman's Crypt (Original Horror): https://www.carman-carrion.com/ Deadly Intent (True Crime): https://www.carman-carrion.com/ Destination Terror: https://www.eeriecast.com/podcasts/destination-terror ________________________________________ SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Me a Coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/carmancarrion ________________________________________ CONNECT WITH CARMAN: Website: https://www.carman-carrion.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@CarmanCarrion YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@FreakyFolklore Twitter/X: https://x.com/CarmanCarrion Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/carmancarrion/ ________________________________________ SUBSCRIBE & REVIEW: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0uiX155WEJnN7QVRfo3aQY iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/freaky-folklore/id1550361184 Your support helps bring you more terrifying tales. ________________________________________ DISCOVER MORE HORROR: http://eeriecast.com/ https://www.carman-carrion.com/ ________________________________________ MUSIC CREDITS: Music and sound effects provided by: ElevenLabs Learn more about your ad choices. SOUCOUYANT – The Caribbean Skin-Shedding Fireball That Drinks Your Blood
There's an old woman at the edge of the village. She keeps to herself, lives in the shadow of the silk cotton tree, and has no husband, no children, no people anyone can name. And in the mornings, the babies three houses down wake up pale, exhausted, and marked with bruises in the soft places — where the blood runs nearest the skin. Tonight we travel to the eastern coast of Trinidad to meet the Soucouyant: the skin-shedding fireball witch of the French Creole Caribbean, who peels off her own skin like a wet dress, folds it into a mortar, and flies through the dark as a ball of hungry fire. We'll follow a young nurse home to Mayaro in 1953 as she comes face to face with something her training can't explain — and with a village deciding, by torchlight, who to blame. But the real story is stranger, older, and sadder than any campfire version. We trace the Soucouyant back across the Middle Passage to her West African roots in the obayifo and asiman, through her collision with the French loup-garou and the European seed-counting vampire, to her Lowcountry sister the Boo Hag — and into the three-in-the-morning terror that every culture on earth has a name for. Because underneath the fire is a question that never stops burning: is the monster the thing in the sky, or is it what a frightened community will do to the loneliest woman among them, and call it protection? Scatter your rice. Salt your doorway. And keep your skin on. Freaky Folklore is part of the Eeriecast Network — find every one of our shows at eeriecast.com. BAUK – The Serbian Cave Monster That Eats Misbehaving Children
Deep in the karst mountains of eastern Serbia lives a monster no one has ever described, because no one who saw it came back. The Bauk waits in caves, holes, and abandoned houses, lurching through the dark on a clumsy gait, and it can only be driven off by two things: light and noise. For centuries, Serbian parents used it to make children behave. Tonight, two American YouTubers turn its cave into content... and learn why the old rules exist. In this episode: the real folklore preserved in the era of Vuk Karadžić, the meaning of "bauljanje," why scholars believe the Bauk is the ghost of a vanished predator, and an original story with an ending you will not shake off. #Bauk #SerbianFolklore #SlavicMythology #FreakyFolklore #Boogeyman: #CaveHorror #BalkanFolklore #Cryptids #ScaryStories #FolkHorror #EeriecastNetwork EXPLORE MORE SPINE-CHILLING CONTENT: Freaky Folklore: https://www.eeriecast.com/podcasts/freaky-folklore Carman's Crypt (Original Horror): https://www.carman-carrion.com/ Deadly Intent (True Crime): https://www.carman-carrion.com/ Destination Terror: https://www.eeriecast.com/podcasts/destination-terror ________________________________________ SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Me a Coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/carmancarrion ________________________________________ CONNECT WITH CARMAN: Website: https://www.carman-carrion.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@CarmanCarrion Twitter/X: https://x.com/CarmanCarrion Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/carmancarrion/ ________________________________________ SUBSCRIBE & REVIEW: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0uiX155WEJnN7QVRfo3aQY iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/freaky-folklore/id1550361184 Your support helps bring you more terrifying tales. ________________________________________ DISCOVER MORE HORROR: http://eeriecast.com/ https://www.carman-carrion.com/ ________________________________________ MUSIC CREDITS: Music and sound effects provided by: ElevenLabs Learn more about your ad choices. A-Mi-Kuk - The Alaskan Monster That Swims Through Land
Every coastal people on earth knows the same rule: if something takes you in the water, you swim for shore. The shore is safety. The A-mi-kuk does not care about the shore. Four long arms. No legs. A body of slick, naked hide, like an animal that was skinned and never got the message. It rises up under kayaks off the Alaskan coast and drags men down into the silt. And when you claw your way onto the mud, certain you have survived it, it keeps coming. It swims through solid ground the way it swims through the sea. Under the tundra. Under the ice. Under the floor of your house. This week, Carman goes into the folklore of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, separates the real ethnographic record from a century of cryptid encyclopedias copying each other, and tells the story of two brothers, a fishing net, and a thing that peels its victims out of their own skin. Because the A-mi-kuk was never a story about the sea. It was a story about the fact that the ground is a promise nobody ever actually made you. Why Did Parents Invent Jenny Greenteeth?
Jenny Greenteeth — Beneath the still, duckweed-choked surface of Britain's ponds and canals lurks Jenny Green Teeth, an ancient water hag from English folklore with elongated grasping arms, needle-sharp teeth, and a centuries-old hunger for children who wander too close to the water's edge. When a drainage project disturbs the old binding that has held her captive for generations, two young siblings discover that some legends were never just stories meant to frighten. The Grootslang - South Africa's Diamond-Cursed Serpent | The Monster That Was Never an Elephant
Deep in the Richtersveld, where the Orange River cuts through some of the oldest, driest land on Earth, there is a cave the locals call the Bottomless Pit. They say it runs sixty feet straight down before it opens into the dark — and that it is the source of every diamond South Africa has ever surrendered. They also say something guards it. Something forty feet long, with diamonds set in its eye sockets, that leaves a trail three feet wide in the river mud and never, ever leaves the print of a foot. This is the Grootslang — the "great snake" — and tonight we're separating the legend from the legend. Because the elephant-serpent monster you've seen online, the one the gods supposedly split apart at the dawn of creation, isn't the real story. The truth is older, quieter, and far more frightening: a creature that prospectors tried to dynamite out of the rock, that the Khoekhoe and the settlers both feared, and that may have swallowed a real man whole in 1917 — at least, that's who the desert decided to blame. Pour something strong. Mind the water's edge. #FreakyFolklore #Grootslang #SouthAfricanFolklore #Cryptid #Cryptozoology #Folklore #Mythology #Richtersveld #Monster #ScaryStories #Horror #Legends #Paranormal #OrangeRiver #DiamondCurse #Africa #FolkloreHorror #CreatureFeature #UrbanLegend #Eeriecast Tonight, on Freaky Folklore: The Grootslang — South Africa's diamond-hoarding serpent of the Richtersveld. We trace the creature from the prospecting camps of the early 1900s to the cartoon that rewrote its mythology, and we follow the 1917 disappearance of Peter Grayson into the place where folklore is actually made. GULON – The Ravenous Wolverine Monster of Norse Legend
In the frozen forests of the far north, a greedy fur trapper learns that something has been feeding on his catch — a beast that gorges until its body swells tight as a drum, squeezes itself empty between two trees, and then returns to feed again, and again, and again, until nothing is left. #Gulon #FreakyFolklore #NorseLegend #ScandinavianFolklore #Wolverine #OlausMagnus CONTENT WARNING This episode of Freaky Folklore contains disturbing content including graphic violence, gore, body horror, animal death, descriptions of evisceration and consumption, and the death of a human character. El-Naddaha - The Woman Who Calls You to the Water of the Nile
Along the canals and riverbanks of rural Egypt, the old fishermen follow one rule: if a voice calls your name from the water after sunset, you do not answer. They call her El-Naddaha — The Caller. A beautiful woman in white, standing among the reeds, who whispers the name only your mother used, the name nobody else should know. And once she learns it, she never stops calling. This week on Freaky Folklore, we travel into the Nile Delta to explore one of Egypt's most unsettling legends — a spirit who doesn't chase, doesn't stalk, and doesn't break down doors. She simply waits, and lets you walk willingly toward your own destruction. Then we descend into a story set in 1968, where a fisherman named Hassan pulls a drowned girl from the river and discovers that some things should stay buried beneath the water — and that grief itself can be a doorway. What makes El-Naddaha so terrifying isn't the fear of drowning. It's the fear of being called by something that knows exactly who you are, knows your grief, and knows precisely which wound to press. Some things chase you. Some things hunt you. But the truly dangerous ones? They simply call your name… and wait for you to come to them. 🎧 New episodes every week.
