Losing Your Father Before He Sees the Man You Become

What happens when your father dies just as he begins to see you as a man? Tommie lost his father in 2004, only 13 years into his 30-year Army career—and just as their relationship was beginning to change. Lance had his father through almost his entire military career but lost him before retirement. In this deeply personal conversation, Tommie and Lance examine father loss, grief, father-son relationships, the need for a father’s approval, and what grown men still need from their fathers after building careers and families of their own. They discuss how a father’s presence—or absence—can shape the way a man approaches leadership, marriage, fatherhood, success, and some of life’s hardest decisions. They also consider how men who lost their fathers early, never knew them, or never felt truly seen can build the guidance and affirmation they didn’t receive. This is not a conversation about comparing grief. It is about carrying the love, lessons, unanswered questions, and desire for our fathers to witness the men we became. If your father is still here, what conversation have you been waiting to have with him? If he’s gone, what part of the person you became do you wish he could have seen? Hosted by retired Army leaders Tommie Jones and Lance Taylor, Four Titles, One Truth brings honest conversations shaped by four perspectives: husbands, fathers, veterans, and Black men. Subscribe and join the conversation. losing your father, death of a father, father loss, grief after losing a parent, father son relationship, men’s grief, grieving dad, adult son grief, fatherhood, becoming a man, making your father proud, healing after loss, men and emotions, Black men and grief, military veterans, military leadership, life after loss, parent loss, Four Titles One Truth, Tommie Jones, Lance Taylor

Why Men Finally Decide to Get Married.

I loved Nikki when I proposed. But love wasn’t the only thing shaping that decision. What finally makes a man ready to ask someone to marry him? Why do men finally decide to get married? TJ and Lance look back at the marriages they grew up around, what they witnessed during their military careers, and how those experiences shaped their own expectations. They talk honestly about love, timing, responsibility, fear of loss, and the moment a relationship becomes a decision about marriage. Why Men Feel Alone - Even When They’re Surrounded by People Who Love Them

You can have a spouse, family, friends, and people willing to support you—and still feel completely alone. But what if part of that loneliness comes from never letting them see what you’re truly carrying? Why do some men feel alone even when they’re surrounded by people who genuinely love them? Tommie and Lance examine how fear of betrayal, judgment, and failure can cause men to hide financial pressure, relationship problems, family struggles, and personal setbacks—even from people who have earned their trust. They also confront a harder truth: sometimes the walls that once protected us become the same walls keeping others from truly knowing and supporting us. This is an honest conversation about loneliness, vulnerability, trust, masculinity, military service, and the personal cost of always appearing to have everything under control. male loneliness, loneliness in men, men’s mental health, emotional isolation, men and vulnerability, trust issues, fear of failure, self-isolation, men and relationships, marriage communication, emotional walls, military veterans, Black men, masculinity, Four Titles One Truth

Can You Fix a Broken Relationship With Your Adult Child?

What do you do when you want a stronger relationship with your adult child…but you don’t know what’s keeping them distant? What do you do when your adult child becomes distant, but you don’t completely understand why? Tommie and Lance have an honest conversation about repairing strained relationships with adult children, when to keep parenting, when to simply listen, whether giving them space creates even more distance, and what happens when you’ve apologized, changed, and tried everything you know to do. For parents dealing with distance, adult child estrangement, or simply a relationship that isn’t as close as they hoped, this episode asks a difficult question: Can you repair the relationship or can you only change your side of it and keep the door open? adult children, adult child relationships, parent adult child relationship, strained family relationships, adult child estrangement, reconnect with adult child, fatherhood, parenting adult children, father son relationship, family reconciliation, repairing relationships, distant adult child, family relationships, parenting, fathers, Black fathers, men and fatherhood, Four Titles One Truth

Why Men Stop Talking in Marriage

Most of the time when a married man says “never mind,” he didn’t forget what he wanted to say. He decided it wasn’t worth saying. But what happens when “never mind” stops being something you say once in a while and becomes how you communicate in your marriage? In this episode of Four Titles, One Truth, Tommie and Lance examine why men can feel corrected, dismissed, or unheard in marriage, and why silence can start to feel easier than another argument. But this isn’t about blaming wives. We also turn the mirror around and ask whether men always communicate what we’re actually feeling, whether we confuse being understood with being agreed with, and whether years of marriage can cause both people to assume they already know what the other is going to say. After decades of marriage, we’re still learning that keeping the peace and communicating well aren’t always the same thing. marriage, married men, marriage communication, husbands, men and marriage, relationship communication, feeling unheard, husband wife communication, long term marriage, marriage problems, men stop talking, communication in marriage, healthy marriage, relationship advice, Four Titles One Truth, mens podcast, marriage podcast

Why Becoming A Civilian Was Harder Than Serving

After more than 30 years of active-duty Army service, Tommie thought he was prepared for military retirement. What he wasn’t prepared for was the identity shift that came with transitioning from military service to civilian life. In this episode of Four Titles, One Truth, Tommie and Lance have an honest conversation about military transition, veteran identity, purpose after the military, and the challenges of becoming a civilian again. For decades, the uniform provided structure, responsibility, status, belonging, and a clear mission. But what happens when the uniform comes off and no one is assigning the next mission? Tommie opens up about leaving the Army with unfinished career goals, struggling with the loss of structure, questioning what meaningful work should look like after retirement, adjusting to having more time at home with his wife, learning to rest without feeling unproductive, and trying to build a new sense of purpose without recreating his military career. Tommie and Lance also discuss why two veterans can experience military retirement very differently and what service members should begin thinking about before their final day in uniform. This conversation goes beyond finding a civilian job. It asks the harder questions: Who are you when the title, rank, responsibility, and daily mission are gone? How do you find purpose after military service without trying to become the person you used to be? And what should veterans know about transitioning to civilian life that a transition-assistance class may never fully prepare them for? Whether you are approaching military retirement, recently separated from active duty, have been a veteran for years, or are leaving any long-term career that became part of your identity, this episode is about learning how to build the next chapter when the old one helped define who you were. military transition, veteran transition, civilian life, life after the military, military retirement, Army retirement, veterans, veteran identity, purpose after military service, finding purpose, transition to civilian life, military to civilian transition, life after service, retired military, veteran mental health, identity after retirement, Army veteran, SFL-TAP, Transition Assistance Program, Four Titles One Truth

What Happens When A Blackman Admits He Is Not Ok?

For many men, keeping things close to the vest can feel like protection. Health concerns. Mental health. Financial struggles. Marriage problems. Fear. Failure. Problems with our children. Even parts of our past we would rather people not know. But there’s a difference between privacy and secrecy, and sometimes a difference between protecting ourselves and protecting the image we want other people to see. In this episode of Four Titles, One Truth, Tommie and Lance examine this question through their own experiences as Black men, husbands, fathers, and veterans. Where did we learn what a man should handle on his own? Why can admitting something is wrong feel dangerous? Who gets to see the man behind the image? What happens when information shared in confidence becomes ammunition? And what has keeping everything inside cost us? We also confront a harder question: Have we ever exaggerated, omitted, or reshaped parts of our own stories because we wanted to appear stronger, more successful, more relevant, or more capable than we actually felt? This is not a conversation telling Black men to open up, share everything, or trust everybody. Some things deserve to remain private, and everybody has not earned access to our vulnerability. Instead, we’re asking ourselves: Am I keeping this to myself because it deserves to be private—or because I’m afraid of what you’ll think of me if you know the truth? And ultimately: Has allowing someone to know the man behind the armor been worth the risk? Four Titles, One Truth is a conversation about life through the experiences of husbands, fathers, veterans, and Black men. We don’t have all the answers. We share what we’ve lived, what we’ve learned, what we’ve gotten wrong, and what we’re still trying to understand. If this conversation resonates with you, share it with someone who might see himself in it, and let’s keep the conversation going. #BlackMen #MensMentalHealth #BlackMensMentalHealth #Vulnerability #FourTitlesOneTruth

What Happens When Being A Provider Isn’t Good Enough for Your Family?

What does it really mean to provide for your family? And what happens when the money, sacrifice, and hard work still aren’t enough? For generations, many men were taught that being a good husband and father meant one thing above everything else: provide. Work hard. Pay the bills. Keep food on the table. Make sure your family never goes without. Tommie learned that definition by watching his father work for 35 years at Armco Steel in Middletown, Ohio. Later, the Army reinforced another version of the same lesson: long hours, responsibility, sacrifice, and mission first. Then fatherhood forced him to confront a painful truth. For 18 years, Tommie consistently paid child support for his son, believing that financial provision was at least one way his son would know that his father cared. Then his son told him: “I didn’t know you paid child support.” That moment changed the way Tommie understood fatherhood. In this episode of Four Titles, One Truth, Tommie and Lance have an honest conversation about the difference between providing for your family and being present with your family. They discuss the definitions of manhood they inherited, how work and success can unintentionally cost our families access to us, what children actually remember about their fathers, and whether relationships can still be rebuilt when a man realizes he was present in provision but absent in presence. This isn’t a conversation telling men to stop working hard or providing for their families. It’s about expanding the definition of what it means to provide. Because sometimes the most important thing our families need from us isn’t something we can put in a bank account. It’s us. Four Titles, One Truth explores life through four lenses: Husbands. Fathers. Veterans. Black Men. In this episode of Four Titles, One Truth, Tommie and Lance have an honest conversation about a question many husbands never stop to ask: Are you happy in your marriage…or have you simply become comfortable? Leading at Work While Leading at Home | Leadership Doesn't Change, The Audience Does

Are you leading your family the same way you lead at work? In this episode of Four Titles, One Truth, Dr. Jermain Williamson (CW5 (R)) joins Tommie Jones and Lance Taylor for an honest conversation about one of leadership’s biggest challenges: learning to lead at home while building a career leading others. The military intentionally develops leaders through schools, mentors, promotions, and decades of experience. At the same time, many leaders are also becoming husbands and fathers, but without the same roadmap. Together, three retired senior Army leaders reflect on what they had to unlearn, what remained constant, and why leadership principles may never change, but the people we lead often require a different approach. In this episode we discuss: Leading Soldiers versus leading your spouse and children Why influence matters more than authority at home Leadership habits that helped at work but hurt at home Earning trust inside your family Leadership after military retirement Building a legacy that extends beyond rank What every husband, father, veteran, and leader can learn about influence Whether you’re serving in the military, leading a business, raising a family, or simply trying to become a better leader, this conversation will challenge you to think differently about what leadership really looks like. Why Good Fathers Still Have Regrets

Can you be a good father and still fail your child in ways you deeply regret? In this episode of Four Titles, One Truth, Tommie and Lance have an honest conversation about fatherhood mistakes, missed opportunities, and the difficult gap between loving your children and making sure they actually feel loved. Tommie reflects on his own relationship with his adult son and the painful realization that good intentions, financial support, and love do not always replace consistent presence. Together, Tommie and Lance discuss the regrets fathers carry, the difference between providing and being present, how conflict between parents can affect children, and why patience can sometimes become avoidance. They also confront a difficult question many fathers eventually face: Can you consider yourself a good father while acknowledging the ways you failed your child? This conversation isn’t about blaming mothers, fathers, divorce, military service, careers, or circumstances. It’s about accountability, growth, forgiveness, and recognizing that regret doesn’t have to be the end of the story. If you’re a father struggling with past mistakes, trying to rebuild a relationship with an adult child, or simply wondering how to become a more present and intentional parent before more time passes, this conversation is for you. In this episode, we discuss: • Why good fathers still carry regrets • Fatherhood mistakes and missed opportunities • The difference between providing and being present • Loving your child versus making sure they feel loved • How conflict between parents can affect children • Taking accountability for mistakes as a father • Rebuilding relationships with adult children • What fathers can do before regret becomes permanent Four Titles, One Truth is a real-talk podcast for Black men navigating life as fathers, husbands, veterans, and men building community through truth, growth, and shared experience. Why Didn't Anybody Teach Us About Juneteenth?

Two retired Army veterans, fathers, and Black men ask a simple question: How did we grow up in America and barely know anything about Juneteenth? In this episode, Tommie and Lance talk about growing up Black in America in the Midwest...and neither of us remembers being taught much about Juneteenth. Not in school. Not in church. Not in everyday conversations. Years later, after discovering Juneteenth for ourselves, we started asking questions about what we knew, what we didn’t know, and why some parts of Black history seemed to receive far less attention than others. In this episode of Four Titles, One Truth, we discuss our personal experiences learning about Juneteenth, what the holiday means to us today, how becoming a federal holiday changed public awareness, and why conversations about history still matter.
