164. How Old Do You Feel? | Disrupt the Answer!
How old are you? Easy question. But here’s a more interesting one: How old do you feel today? Researchers call the difference between those two numbers your subjective age—and a growing body of research suggests that the age you feel is connected to how you function, how you handle stress, and even long-term health outcomes. In Part Four of our Well-Intentioned Aging series, today we move from Dr. Becca Levy’s age beliefs and Ashton Applewhite’s challenge to ageism into something intensely personal: your day-to-day experience of your own age. And a 2025 national study of adults over 50 identified ordinary activities associated with feeling younger—including walking, exercising, socializing, volunteering, and reading. This isn’t an invitation to deny your chronological age or chase youth. It’s an invitation to stop letting the number dictate the day. We’ll look at what the research really shows, where it needs caution, and how movement, engagement, purpose, and a greater sense of control can help us live the age we are with more possibility, energy, and action.
