    Episode 40 - Laura's Story

    In today's episode I'm joined by Laura Boland. Some of you might remember Laura from Episode 14 of Finding Space. When we first recorded in late July last year, Laura shared her fertility journey with incredible honesty. She spoke about endometriosis, IVF, the early arrival of her son Charlie, an ectopic pregnancy, failed embryo transfers and the heartbreaking loss of another much-loved baby. Just a few weeks after we recorded our first conversation, Laura found out she was pregnant. Today, she's back to share what happened next. We talk about pregnancy after loss, the anxiety and uncertainty that can come with it, what life looks like now after everything she's been through, and how welcoming another baby doesn't take away the love or grief for babies lost. We also reflect on the power of sharing our stories, why hearing hopeful news from others who have walked a similar path can bring a different kind of joy, and how speaking openly about our experiences can help us process what we've carried for so long.     Episode 39 - Sandra's Story

    Today on Finding Space, I'm joined by Sandra who shares her own journey, which included multiple surgeries for endometriosis, IVF, and the devastating turn her life took following a traumatic pregnancy loss that changed her life forever. Recently, as part of her Psychology degree, Sandra completed a qualitative research study exploring the experiences of 11 involuntarily childless midlife women (aged 40–55) living in the pronatalist state of Ireland. We talk about grief that often goes unseen, identity, friendships, and what it means to live in a society where motherhood is often seen as the expected path. Sandra also shares the key findings from her study, including what needs to change, the concept of post-traumatic growth, and the possibility of finding meaning and new possibilities after loss. You'll hear us talk about infertility, IVF, pregnancy loss, hysterectomy, childlessness not by choice, grief, identity after loss, post-traumatic growth, and the lived experiences of involuntarily childless women in Ireland.     Episode 37 - Sabrina’s Story The TFMR Doula

    Today on Finding Space, I’m joined by Sabrina Fletcher, founder of The TFMR Doula, podcast host and advocate. In 2018, Sabrina and her husband were faced with the heartbreaking decision to end a very wanted pregnancy after receiving a devastating diagnosis during their daughter Clara’s pregnancy. Since then, she has dedicated her work to supporting other parents through diagnosis, decision-making, grief, and life after loss. In this episode, Sabrina shares her journey with us. We talk about TFMR, the stigma that can still exist, the language used around pregnancy loss, and why so many parents feel unseen in their grief. She also shares how her own experience led her to create support groups, resources and communities for other families navigating TFMR.     Episode 36 - Conversations that help people feel less alone

    This week's episode is a solo one. Recently, I shared some experiences sent to me by members of this community around infertility, pregnancy loss, grief and some of the everyday moments that can feel unexpectedly difficult when you’re carrying all of that. I originally shared them on Instagram Stories Afterwards, a lot of people reached out to say they could relate, shared their own experiences, offered advice, or simply let someone else know they weren’t alone. I also shared some of these messages in a follow-up post. As not everyone is on social media, I wanted to bring some of those Instagram conversations together into a podcast episode too.     Episode 35 - Jennie’s Story | Life Almost

    In today’s episode I’m joined by award-winning journalist and author Jennie Agg, whose writing around miscarriage, fertility and women’s health has helped so many people feel less alone. After experiencing recurrent miscarriage, Jennie began writing openly about what she was going through in an attempt to make sense of it all. That writing later became her award-winning blog, The Uterus Monologues, and eventually her beautiful and deeply moving book, Life, Almost. In this episode, Jennie shares her experience of pregnancy loss, recurrent miscarriage, trying again after loss, and the complicated mix of grief, fear and hope that can come with trying to conceive. We also talk about miscarriage being so common, yet still feeling so misunderstood and hidden, the language we use around pregnancy loss, gaps in care and support, and the silence so many people still experience while going through it. Jennie also speaks so honestly about the emotional reality of living in the “in-between”, wanting something so desperately, while being terrified of losing it again.     Episode 34 - Charlotte's Story

    Today on Finding Space I’m joined by Charlotte who shares the heartbreak of her premature ovarian insufficiency diagnosis and later discovering she had stage 4endometriosis after 26 years without answers. After years of trying to conceive, navigating multiple hurdles, and travelling abroad for treatment, Charlotte is now mum to a beautiful baby girl. This is a very honest conversation about delayed diagnosis, endometriosis, IVF, grief, and hope. It’s also an insight into years of living with extreme pain from the age of 11, while being repeatedly told it was just “normal period pain”. Charlotte shares what it was like trying to get on with everyday life while quietly dealing with debilitating symptoms for years, through school, work, holidays, and major life moments, all while feeling repeatedly dismissed and unheard by medical professionals. We also talk about the heartbreak of receiving her POI diagnosis, how poorly and insensitively that news was delivered, and the emotional impact of eventually having to move to IVF. Charlotte also opens up about coming to terms with the fact that her path to parenthood was not going to look the way she had always imagined. We also touch on the pain of watching others around you become pregnant and move through milestones that you are so desperately longing and fighting for yourself.     Episode 33 - Grief & Joy can co-exist

    Another little mini episode from me this week. I originally shared some of these thoughts on Instagram stories earlier this week, and the response reminded me just how many people quietly carry these feelings too, so I’ve put them into this episode. These are very personal thoughts and feelings to share and they came after such a lovely and happy moment. I'm sharing because I think we need to talk more honestly about triggers and grief. You can be genuinely happy for someone else and heartbroken for yourself at the same time, and I don’t think that’s something we should feel shame or guilt around anymore.     Episode 30 - Suzie’s Story Strength Beyond Loss

    In today’s episode I’m joined by Suzie, mum to Joey, who shares her deeply difficult journey through pregnancy loss, termination for medical reasons and secondary infertility. After deciding to try for a second baby, Suzie experienced a miscarriage at 10 weeks. Shortly after, she became pregnant again but following her 12-week scan, she and her partner Johnny were given devastating news about their baby’s health. They were then faced with an incredibly difficult decision, and ultimately had to travel abroad for care, something no one should have to go through at such a heartbreaking time. In this conversation Suzie speaks so openly about her experience of termination for medical reasons, the difficult realities she faced, the failings in care and what she feels may help others going through similar experiences.     Episode 29 - Becky’s Story Defining Mum

    Today I’m joined by Becky, whose diagnosis of Premature Ovarian Insufficiency led to a long and difficult fertility journey, one that included multiple IVF cycles and miscarriage, before she and her husband made the decision to grow their family through egg donation. They are now parents to three beautiful girls; Mila, Eska and Lena. From her experience, Becky went on to create DefiningMum, a platform helping others feel less alone, as well as Paths to Parent Hub, a space supporting donor conception families, along with its accompanying podcast. She is also co-founder of Fertility Matters at Work, where she works alongside Natalie & Claire to raise awareness of fertility struggles in the workplace and support employers to create more compassionate and supportive environments. In this episode, we talk about her experience of donor conception and the conversations that come with it. In this episode, Jemma shares her own fertility story from trying to conceive, moving into IVF and the emotional and physical rollercoaster that came with it.     Episode 27 - Brenda Casey Clinical Midwife Specialist Bereavement NMH

    In today's episode I’m joined by Brenda Casey, a registered nurse and midwife with over 27 years’ experience, who since 2015 has been working as the Clinical Midwife Specialist in Bereavement & Loss at the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin. Brenda’s work focuses on supporting families through pregnancy loss, perinatal bereavement, and the often-hidden grief that follows. She is also deeply passionate about education and improving how we care for families after loss. Through her research into student midwife education, Brenda developed a hands-on bereavement care workshop, which has now been integrated into midwifery programmes in UCD. In this conversation, we talk about disenfranchised grief, the many ways people experience and express grief, ways families can remember their babies, and how we can better support people after pregnancy loss.     In today’s episode, I’m joined by Nicola McGlinchey, who many of you may know from her page Finding Glimmers in Grief. Nicola is a mum to three beautiful children. Brógan herfirst love, Lorcán her forever baby in the stars, and Éabha, her little glimmer of light in the dark. Nicola is here today to share Lorcán with us and she does so with such honesty and openness. She talks about the amazing care she received in hospital, the language around grief, parenting after loss, and what finding glimmers really means, not as a way to move on, but as a way to keep going. Nicola also shares the work she does supporting other bereaved families through grief journals and bereavement packs, and the people and small acts of kindness that sit behind them.     Episode 23 - Vicki's Story

    In Episode 23, I’m joined by Vicki Spillane, COO of Crohn’s & Colitis Ireland, an IBD and stoma warrior, and someone who has faced more than her share of heartbreak and resilience. Vicki was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at just 13, and later underwent stoma surgery at 25, when she was told her fertility might be affected. Over the years, she experienced multiple miscarriages, and then the painful reality of being told that pregnancy would be too high-risk for her health. She shares what it’s been like to live with this illness from such a young age, the losses she’s carried, and how she’s now turned so much of what she’s lived through into support for others. This episode is about grief, strength, acceptance, and the different ways care and motherhood can show up in a life.
