DTVC Podcast 282 "Lady Bloodfight"
In this episode I'm joined once again by Jeanette Ward from The Mundane Adventures of a Fangirl, this time to discuss the Amy Johnston film "Lady Bloodfight." Before that, we look at 2026 in film, which movies have done well and why, the ones that have flopped, and where we see things going for the rest of the year. Then with "Lady Bloodfight," we look at the story and the holes in it, but also the great fights, which is probably why we come to this film. DTVC Monologue, "Josie and the Pussycats"
We're trying something new on the DTVC Podcast feed, "DTVC Monologues" are 15-20 minute takes on a film I just watched. In this first one I look at 2001's "Josie and the Pussycats." It's one that people have been revisiting lately with a sense that maybe it was slept on when it was first released, but deserves another look. Did it? And was I able to make the case one way or the other inside of 20 minutes? DTVC Podcast 281 "Checkmate" and "Once Upon a Time in Brooklyn"
Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back for his monthly spot on the pod as we look at two more movies that feature rappers, "Checkmate" and "Once Upon a Time in Brooklyn." With "Checkmate," we're pushing felony weight again in the world of Alex Maisonette and Fat Joe, and if it's possible, it might be even crazier than before! At least we have Old Timer Dave. Then on the second one, "Once Upon a Time in Brooklyn", William DeMeo leads your classic NYC mob story, with small parts by Ice-T and Ja Rule. Finally, our spotlight on a fight looks at the end fight in "Walking Tall." DTVC Extra 59, Four Mainstream Erotic Thrillers
"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode I look at four mainstream Erotic Thrillers. In the first segment, I talk about "Body Heat" and "Body Double," why I liked them, and the ways they share DNA with 90s DTV Erotic Thrillers, and ways they differ. In the second segment I talk about "Fatal Attraction" and "Basic Instinct," and with those I look at how "Fatal Attraction" isn't a paradigm that's used often in 90s DTV Erotic Thrillers, and how "Basic Instinct" propelled an already burgeoning subgenre at that time. Finally, in the third segment I talk about my second novel, "A Girl and a Gun," giving some background on how I came up with the initial idea, how the story evolved, and how it showed me that I could write novels more easily. DTVC Podcast 280 "Night Eyes" and "Night Eyes II"
We're joined once again by Jon Cross from the PM Entertainment Podcast and the After Movie Diner, this time to discuss "Night Eyes" and "Night Eyes II." With the first one, we look at where it sits as one of the first of the DTV Erotic Thrillers, the appearance of Cole S. McKay, and the plot holes that we love it in spite of. Then with the sequel, we look at Tweed's introduction to the series, how Andrew Stevens is as a lead, and more plot holes that we love it in spite of. Finally, after the end theme, we have bonus content, where Jon and I riff about Maine humorist Tim Sample, where else in the world you can have a "local humorist," and what a British Stephen King would sound like. You can find the PM Entertainment Podcast and After Movie Diner on all major podcatchers, and on YouTube. DTVC Extra 58, The Mandalorian
"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode I look at "The Mandalorian" Disney+ series, and the recent film "The Mandalorian and Grogu." In the first segment, I talk about the first two seasons, the atmosphere which it came out in, and why those two seasons worked so well. In the second segment I talk about the third season and why that one wasn't as well-received as the first two, and how that may have hurt momentum going into the movie, "The Mandalorian and Grogu," which underperformed at the box office. Finally, in the third segment I talk about my new flash fiction collection "Boston Stories Vol. 1," giving some background on how I came up with the initial ideas, and its journey from Myspace blog posts to self-published book. DTVC Podcast 278, "Bloodfist II"
In this episode I'm joined once again by Chris "The Brain" Kacvinsky from Bulletproof Action, and this time we're doing some Don "The Dragon" one week before his birthday with "Bloodfist II." Before that though, we discuss the late James Lew, and his impact on the world of DTV action. Then with "Bloodfist II," we realize this movie wasn't as good as we thought, between the hero's poor judge of character, the Die Hard scenario padding, the lack of understanding of how tournament movies should work, and the sad sack that is Tim Baker. You can find Chris and Bulletproof Action at bulletproofaction.com, and the Bulletproof Action podcast on most major podcatchers. Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back for his monthly spot on the pod as we look at "Hounds of War" and "Affinity". With "Hounds of War," we fire up the Grillo again for one we'd been waiting for for a long time. Was it worth the wait? Then on the second one, "Affinity", Marko Zaror gets after it, and we're all better for it. Finally, our spotlight on a fight looks at the end fight in "The Perfect Weapon". DTVC Extra 57, The Mortal Kombat Movies
"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode I look at the Mortal Kombat movies. In the first segment, I talk about my history with the games, and how that played into the first two movies in the 1990s. I also get into why I thought the first one worked better than the second. In the second segment I talk about the two 2020s movies, giving my thoughts on them, and why I think they may have a ceiling of $125-150 million in earnings. Then I give my own ideas for how I might make the film series profitable. Finally, in the third segment I talk about my 2022 book "Holtman Arms," giving some background on how I came up with the story and characters, and how the loss of our cat led to the creation of one of the characters in honor of him. DTVC Podcast 276, "Silent Trigger"
In this episode I'm joined by Freddie Young from Full Moon Reviews as we look at another Dolph DTV film, "Silent Trigger". We start with the first 90 minutes or so looking at the year in movies so far, especially the success of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," but also "The Odyssey," "Obsession," etc., and why we think so many people are going to the theater again. I start by putting it in context, especially after 2023, the year that was all about "superhero fatigue." What was it about this year that has allowed for "Brand New Day" to have historic success? Then I get into whether I liked it or not and why. DTVC Podcast 274, "6 Bullets"
In this episode Sean Malloy of "I Must Break This Podcast" is back, and we're discussing another Van Damme DTV flick, 2012's "6 Bullets," the second of three films he did with Ernie Barbarash. This was similar to "Assassination Games" where it had aged well compared to the current state of DTV action, and Van Damme turns in a great performance, but it did lack Scott Adkins, which may have allowed "Assassination Games" to come out ahead. Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back for his monthly spot on the pod as we look at "A Line of Fire" and "Prey of Wrath". With "A Line of Fire," it wasn't horrible, but David AR White as an action lead was tough for us to take. DTVC Extra 55 "Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 pt 2" and "The Punisher: One Last Kill"
"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode I look at what I call "Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 pt 2," because I felt like season 2 was just part 2 of season 1. I also give my ideas for other one-offs, including a team up of Thomas Jane's Punisher and Wesley Snipes's Blade--tell me you wouldn't love that! Finally, in the last segment I talk about my 2024 book "Nadia and Aidan," giving some background on how I came up with the story and characters, and some of the rules I broke to write it.
