Walk Humbly with Your God - A Look at Micah 6:8

“No, O people, the LORD has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” – Micah 6:8 (NLT) What does God really want from us? Micah 6:8 is one of those verses that seems to capture the heart of what it means to follow God in just a few words: do what is right, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God. It’s a familiar verse, one that appears on artwork, in social media bios, and in countless sermons. But when we understand the context in which these words were spoken, they become an even more powerful invitation to examine how we’re living. In this episode of Doable Discipleship, Jason explores the powerful message of Micah 6:8 and what it reveals about the kind of life God desires for His people. Through the prophet Micah, God confronts Israel’s injustice, pride, and empty religious gestures, reminding them that genuine faith should transform the way they live and treat others. Longing for Joy with Alastair Sterne

We all want to experience joy, but sometimes it can feel just out of reach. The Burden & Gift of Living

What does it mean to live faithfully when life feels heavy? Life is a gift, but that doesn’t mean it always feels like one. Delighting in Jesus with Asheritah Ciuciu (Rewind)

There’s a question at the heart of the new book “Delighting in Jesus” that caught my attention: it says, “I know I should read by Bible and pray every day, but I’m just not consistent. For many Christians, ‘daily devotions’ and ‘spiritual disciplines’ strike guilt and shame in our hearts. But what if we got it all wrong? Choose to Move In (Rewind)

“Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” - John 15:12-13 We live in a time when it has become incredibly easy to disengage. It’s easier to stay home. Easier to keep scrolling. Easier to avoid someone else’s mess. Easier to say “I’m sorry you’re going through that” than to actually enter into what they’re going through. But easier doesn’t always mean better. In this episode of Doable Discipleship, Jason explores an idea he calls “moving in”: intentionally choosing engagement over isolation and moving toward people rather than away from them. Scripture repeatedly calls followers of Jesus to value others, carry one another’s burdens, love our neighbors, and enter into meaningful relationship with one another. In this episode, we explore: -Why our culture makes isolation and disengagement increasingly easy -What it means to intentionally “move in” toward other people -Why meaningful friendships require choosing engagement even when it’s inconvenient -What the Good Samaritan teaches us about compassion that actually costs something -How technology can contribute to isolation, but doesn’t have to determine our choices -Why carrying one another’s burdens is central to following Jesus -How Jesus Himself modeled a life of moving toward people In the story of the Good Samaritan, two people saw a hurting man and kept moving. The Samaritan saw the same man, felt compassion, stopped, and entered into his need. His decision cost him time, energy, resources, and money, but he chose the harder and better path. Moving in is a choice. We can choose what is comfortable and convenient, or we can choose relationship. We can stay on the sidelines, or we can enter into someone else’s life. We can see people as interruptions, or we can see them as invitations to love. And ultimately, we move toward others because Jesus first moved toward us. He didn’t remain distant from our brokenness. He came close, took on flesh, bore our burdens, and entered our mess. As followers of Jesus, we’re invited to reflect that same heart by loving deeply, serving generously, and building the kind of community that reflects His Kingdom. A Gentle Touch: Love Languages in Action

“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others.” - 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NLT) Sometimes the most loving thing you can do for someone is stop trying to fix their problem and simply be with them. When someone we love is hurting, frustrated, grieving, or just having a bad day, our instinct can be to offer advice, find a solution, or help them see things differently. But sometimes what they really need is much simpler: our presence. A listening ear. Or maybe just a hug. In this episode of Doable Discipleship, Jason explores what we can learn from Job’s friends, who actually got things right before they got them very, very wrong. When they first arrived, they entered into Job’s grief, sat beside him, and remained silent for seven days. It was when they started talking that things began to fall apart. In this episode, we explore: -Why our instinct to “fix” someone’s pain can sometimes get in the way of loving them well -What Job’s friends teach us about the ministry of presence -Why carrying someone’s burden doesn’t necessarily mean trying to remove it -How understanding the ways people give and receive love can help us care for them better -The power of a hug, a gentle touch, or simply sitting with someone who is hurting -How the comfort we receive from God equips us to comfort others Scripture calls us to carry one another’s burdens and to “mourn with those who mourn.” Sometimes discipleship looks less like having the right thing to say and more like being willing to sit beside someone in whatever they are carrying. Ultimately, we love others out of the overflow of the love and comfort we have first received from God. As we abide in Christ and experience His care for us, we can learn to enter into the lives of others with a different goal: not necessarily to fix the problem, but to love the person in the way they most need to be loved. Jesus Looked at Him and Loved Him

“Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. The Invitation to Confession with Jamin Goggin (Rewind)

“The act of confessing our sins to one another is a graced invitation to practice the way of faith, hope, and love. The soul tempted to despair will be particularly allergic to ecclesial confession, but it is here that they will find great remedy for their agonizing condition. For in confessing their sins to one another, they are heard with the faith of fellow saints, they are encouraged by the hope of fellow pilgrims, and they are loved with the charity of brothers and sisters.” - Pastoral Confessions Confession is not an easy topic - but it is a healthy topic. Oftentimes when the topic of confession is brought up, it’s met with one of two responses: 1. "My walls are now up and I’m tuning out what is being talked about." 2. "This is so true and important and a lot of other people have things to confess." But like I said, confession is healthy. And even more than that, confession is necessary. Now I may be biased, but one of the best books on confession releases one week from today - Pastoral Confessions written by my friend Jamin Goggin. Jamin has been on this podcast a few times in the past. He’s an associate professor at Talbot School of Theology, Director of the Healthy Pastor Initiative for Finishing the Task, and one of the most thoughtful theologians I know. In today’s conversation Jamin and I talk about what led him to write about confession, the real human struggles with sin and confession, some ways we can more normalize confession, and much more. The 𝐼𝑠-𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠 of God: What it Means to be 𝐵𝑒𝑖𝑛𝑔 Itself with JD Lyonhart

“And to this the voice bellowed: ‘I AM WHO I AM.’” . . . “At first, I thought maybe this was just God’s way of saying, ‘Hey, I exist. I AM real. Notice me!’ Or maybe it was God’s way of avoiding the question. I ask, ‘Who are you?’ and he says, ‘I AM WHAT I AM.’ In other words, it’s none of your business who I am, Moses. But the more I’ve thought about it, the more the whole ‘I AM’ thing has begun to strike a chord. You see, I keep asking which one of the gods ‘is’ real. But that question already assumes I know what the meaning of ‘is’ is. What is is-ness? What does it mean to exist - to be something that is rather than isn’t? . . . And to show that we can do so in a worshipful, honoring, reverent way. When I first met author and professor J.D. Lyonhart last year to talk about his book The Journey of God, I knew I met a fellow compatriot in this mission. His books are incredibly fun and funny, while wrestling with deep philosophical, Biblical issues. His latest book is called Zeus was an Atheist: An Odd Retelling of the Moses Story. Even the title elicits a chuckle. The book puts you in the mind of Moses, not from a “this is surely what he was thinking” standpoint, but, yes, an odd retelling standpoint. Navigating the Bible: The Message of the New Testament with Ben Witherington III

In August of 2024 I started a series called Navigating the Bible with the goal of talking about every book of the Bible. I didn’t know at the time how long it would take. I didn’t know who would say yes to coming on with me to talk about these books. But now, just about two years later, this is the final episode of the series. I may do some additional episodes down the line about to add things here or there, but today’s episode is a bit of a capstone for the Navigating the Bible series. The New Testament is, rightfully so, all about Jesus. The Gospels are the accounts of Jesus’ life and ministry on earth. The epistles are about the living out the reality of Jesus. As we’ve looked at each book of the New Testament we’ve answered questions like what are the major themes of this book, what does this book teach us about God, what does this book teach us about ourselves, and so on. Today we’re going to pose these questions about the whole of the New Testament so why not have somebody on who has written about every book of the New Testament. Navigating the Bible: Revelation

“Then I looked again, and I heard the voices of thousands and millions of angels around the throne and of the living beings and the elders. And they sang in a mighty chorus: ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slaughtered - to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing.’ And then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea. They sang: ‘Blessing and honor and glory and power belong to the one sitting on the throne and to the Lamb forever and ever.’” - Revelation 5:11-13 Revelation, the final book of the Bible, and perhaps the most, “what am I to do with this?”. Revelation is known for its complexity, but, at its heart, is a beautiful message of hope, worship, and love. I’m going to be up front with you: if you are looking for insight and answers to all of the many elements of Revelation, this is not the podcast for you. We won’t be talking about seals, beasts, dragons, the 144,00 - you know, what some people may call the greatest hits of Revelation. Navigating the Bible: 1, 2 & 3 John

“Dear friends, I am not writing a new commandment for you; rather it is an old one you have had from the very beginning. This old commandment - to love one another - is the same message you heard before. Yet it is also new. Jesus lived the truth of this commandment , and you also are living it. For the darkness is disappearing, and the true light is already shining.” 1 John 2:7-8 John’s epistles, 1, 2, and 3 John, are a beautiful extension from John’s Gospel. John continues his central themes of abiding and living out the call to love one another while spending considerable time on a new theme: confidence in salvation. John talks a lot about sin, about false teachers, about issues of the heart - but he does all of this under the cloak of what it means to be a child of God, to be in fellowship with Jesus, and to love one another. Navigating the Bible: 2 Peter/Jude

“In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:5-8 I’m going to start with something obvious. 2 Peter and Jude aren’t next to each other in the biblical order. So, why are these books so often linked? Wouldn’t it make more sense to do 1 Peter and 2 Peter together? Our guest today does well to explain why these letters are linked but I’ll spoil a little of it here because these letters hit hard on a similar theme: pursuing virtue. These are letters of encouragement - reminders to readers to be aware of false teachers and the trappings of the world and to focus steadfastly on the virtuous way of Christ. These letters are beautiful reminders of God’s love for you as you continue to, quoting Peter, “make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight.” To help us navigate 2 Peter and Jude is Peter Davids, retired Professor of Christianity at Houston Baptist University while also have taught at Regent College, Trinity School, and Canadian Theological Seminary and is author of a commentary on 2 Peter and Jude. Navigating the Bible: 1 Peter

“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance - an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.” - 1 Peter 1:3-4 After reading so many letters from Paul, a brief stop in Hebrews, and then a letter from James, we now get to hear from Peter. 1 Peter is a letter of hope - a letter of what it means to be called the family of God and to live that out. It’s a letter of what it means to be a Christian, particularly being a Christian in a time of suffering and persecution. It’s a letter about how to treat one another. It’s a letter about identity, being both living stones and humble sheep. This letter is only five chapters long but it paints a beautiful picture of the Christian life. To help us navigate 1 Peter is Dr. Jeanine Brown, Professor of New Testament at Bethel Seminary and she is currently working on a commentary on 1 Peter. Navigating the Bible: James

“What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, ‘Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well’ - but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.” James 2:14-17 I think many people probably fall into one of two camps about James: it’s either one of their favorites or they bristle against it a little bit. This is because James does not pull any punches about what it means to live in a way that focuses and cares for other people. He says, “faith is dead without good works.” He says, “His actions made his faith complete.” He says, “I will show you my faith by my good deeds.” All of this is in the context of what James has to say about helping the poor, the widows and the orphans, and what he has to say about how we handle persecution and trials and what he has to say about how we speak. James is an in your face book in the best of ways. Navigating the Bible: Hebrews

“There were many priests under the old system, for death prevented them from remaining in office. But because Jesus lives forever, his priesthood lasts forever. Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.” - Hebrews 7:23-25 The book of Hebrews is an interesting first step out of Paul’s letters. In many ways, Hebrews may be even better read earlier in a New Testament reading because it has a heavy focus on Old Testament stories. Hebrews reads like a connector or bridge between Old and New Testaments while, at its heart, being a book of comfort - a book reminding of God’s faithfulness; a book continuously pointing to Christ. Navigating the Bible: Philemon

“I appeal to you to show kindness to my child, Onesimus . . . I wanted you to help because you were willing, not because you were forced . . . He is no longer like a slave to you. He is more than a slave, for he is a beloved brother, especially to me. Now he will mean much more to you, both as a man and as a brother in the Lord.” Philemon vs. 10, 14, and 16. The book of Philemon is unlike any of Paul’s other letters. Or, perhaps I should say it this way, it is unlike any of Paul’s other full letters. We’ve seen Paul admonish or encourage specific people amidst some of his other letters, but here we have a standalone letter from Paul to Philemon asking him a favor regarding Philemon’s slave, Onesimus. This letter is important for many reasons as it teaches us from multiple different angles. What can we learn from what Paul is saying to Philemon? What can we learn from what Paul is saying about Onesimus? And what can we learn from how Paul says these things? It’s a little letter but there’s a lot to unpack, so to help us navigate the book of Philemon is Dr. Dennis Edwards, Vice President for Church Relations and Dean of the Seminary at North Park University in Chicago and author of the “Philemon” section of the The New Testament in Color multiethnic Bible commentary.
