Law, Jesus, and Divorce: Our Nature Improved (Part 2)
In Acts 6:14, some complained that Christians were changing the customs established under Moses. The concern is understandable. Paul taught circumcision is no longer required. We need not participate in temple sacrifices. We have added baptism and communion. Those are changes, but Moses forbade adding or removing from the law and even Jesus said he wasn't abolishing the law. Meanwhile, Paul says we are not under the law, but rather, he is under the law of Christ. Yet, the law, being Genesis - Deuteronomy, can't be completely set aside since it contains the promise to Abraham through which the gospel came in the person and work of Jesus. Also, Paul specifically referenced principles in the law and applies them for use in the New Testament era. Additionally, the Jerusalem council forbade eating things offered to idols, strangled, and blood, Paul circumcised Timothy, and participated in other people's Nazarite vows in Acts 21. That all sounds like law stuff. In this episode, I address the central question that these observations raise: What caused the discontinuity in the law between the old covenant and the new covenant? I cover the prevalent interpretations that theologians use to account for this discontinuity, show the weaknesses of those systems, and propose a different one: the nature change view.
