Conscious Unbottling - healing beneath the alcohol

Megan Webb

What if quitting drinking wasn’t the end of your story—but the beginning of coming home to yourself?

Welcome to Conscious Unbottling, a podcast for women who are ready to stop using alcohol to numb, cope, escape or get through the day—and start creating a life they genuinely want to live.

Hosted by Megan Webb, an alcohol recovery and trauma-informed coach, Conscious Unbottling explores what’s really underneath drinking and why simply quitting alcohol doesn’t always solve the deeper issues.

Because sometimes alcohol isn’t the problem. It’s the solution we found for something underneath.

Each episode dives into the deeper layers of alcohol recovery, sobriety and emotional healing—including core wounds, trauma, nervous system regulation, limiting beliefs, people-pleasing, perfectionism, self-worth, shame, anxiety, toxic relationships, narcissistic abuse and the patterns that keep us stuck.

Megan speaks honestly about what it takes to become alcohol-free, rebuild self-trust and rediscover who you are beyond drinking—especially in midlife, when you may find yourself asking, “Is this really it?”

You’ll hear real conversations, personal stories, expert insights and practical tools around quitting alcohol, sober curiosity, alcohol freedom, trauma recovery, healing from toxic relationships, building confidence and creating a more purposeful and authentic life.

Whether you're sober curious, questioning your relationship with alcohol, trying to quit drinking, newly alcohol-free, or years into sobriety but still feel stuck, Conscious Unbottling is here to help you go deeper.

Because getting sober is only the beginning.

The real transformation happens when you start to understand why you drank, what you were trying to numb, and who you can become when you no longer need alcohol to cope.

This is your invitation to stop escaping your life—and start consciously unbottling the woman you've always been underneath it all.

No shame. No blame. Just curiosity, compassion and the courage to change.

Mum's who drink alcohol to cope.

Send us Fan Mail At some point, “wine time” stops being a treat and starts being the moment our kids lose us. We can be the mum who shows up to school events, keeps everyone fed, and holds the family together, while also disappearing emotionally every night behind a glass. That contradiction is painful to admit, especially when we love our children more than anything, yet it’s also where real change begins. We share a raw look at how children notice the small shifts: the change in our voice after one drink, the difference in our patience, the way they start to scan the house for cues about what kind of night it will be. We talk about the shame of hiding alcohol, the frightening feeling of being physically present but emotionally unavailable, and the spiral that keeps so many mums stuck: drink to cope, wake up with guilt, push through the day, then repeat. Then we shift to what actually helps: sobriety paired with deeper work. Not just removing alcohol, but learning to live without escaping, understanding the wounds underneath, supporting the nervous system, and practising how to pause before we react. We explore what “safe” really means for kids, how trust is built conversation by conversation, and why the better question is often not “Am I a good mother?” but “What are my children experiencing when I drink?” If you’re a mum questioning your relationship with alcohol, press play and take one step forward. Alcohol and the hidden shame cycle

Send us Fan Mail Shame can make a single night of drinking feel like a verdict on your character. If you have ever woken up after wine or a big night and thought, “What is wrong with me?”, we want to slow that moment right down and look at what is actually happening under the surface. Because shame is not the same as guilt, and it is often the hidden force that keeps the drink regret promise loop spinning. Meg talks about how shame says “I am wrong”, how it pushes you into hiding, and why secrecy around alcohol can grow even when you look like you have it together. She also goes deeper into the core wounds that alcohol is often trying to numb: loneliness, rejection, feeling not enough, abandonment, people pleasing, and the belief that your needs do not matter. For many women, these patterns start in childhood through criticism, conditional love, or emotionally unavailable parenting, and they can be reinforced later through toxic relationships, betrayal, divorce, or years of putting everyone else first. Then the conversation shifts into practical healing: awareness without shame, naming what you feel in the moment, and asking what you actually need instead of what the drink gives you. We explore why “white knuckling” and willpower only go so far, how to take responsibility without self-hatred, and a simple writing exercise to uncover the belief you have carried about yourself for years. If you are looking for alcohol freedom, emotional regulation, and a kinder relationship with yourself, this conversation is for you. If it resonates, subscribe, share it with a woman who needs it, and leave a rating and review so more people can find the podcast. Toxic Love

Send us Fan Mail You can be in a toxic relationship and still struggle to “prove” it, even to yourself. We’re talking about the kind that doesn’t always look dramatic on the outside, but slowly makes you smaller on the inside: covert narcissism, subtle manipulation, and the quiet loss of self trust that can happen over months or years. We unpack how low self esteem and old relationship patterns can push us towards what feels safe instead of what’s genuinely healthy. I share my own experience of realising I’d been choosing comfort over growth, confusing attachment with love, and carrying an old “am I enough?” wound into a dynamic that reinforced it. We also name the behaviours that can keep you stuck, like walking on eggshells, second guessing your reactions, and feeling punished for having needs. Then we get practical and compassionate: the better question than “why didn’t you leave?”, the signs that you’re becoming more yourself or disappearing, and what boundaries and self validation actually look like in real life. We also break down trauma bonding, including how love bombing and devaluing can hook you through intermittent affection, and why that cycle can feel so hard to break. If this resonates, you’re not alone, and you’re allowed to take your unhappiness seriously. Subscribe, share this with someone who needs it, and leave a review so more women can find support and language for what they’re living through. Fear of rejection

Send us Fan Mail Rejection can feel brutal, but the most painful part is often what we make it mean about us. If “no” instantly translates to “I’m not enough”, it can shape everything: the way we text, the way we speak up, the way we pick partners, and the way we silence our needs to avoid conflict. We sit with that fear honestly and name the pattern many of us know too well: searching outside ourselves for proof that we’re okay. We trace rejection sensitivity back to early experiences of criticism, inconsistency, emotional disconnection, comparison, bullying, or feeling like love had conditions. Those experiences can quietly form core beliefs that follow us into adulthood, even when life looks stable on paper. From there, we dig into people pleasing, why “being nice” can become a mask for fear, and how “safe” relationships aren’t always emotionally healthy. We also reframe rejection as something that’s often about fit, values, timing, or capacity rather than a verdict on your worth. We then talk coping and why alcohol can become a shortcut to numb feelings we don’t yet know how to hold. The deeper shift we’re aiming for is simple and challenging: not a life with zero rejection, but a life where we trust we can survive it without rejecting ourselves. You’ll leave with practical prompts, including the question that can change a decision in real time: what would I do right now if I wasn’t afraid of being rejected? If this resonates, share it with someone who needs it, subscribe, and please leave a rating and review. Binge drinking and blackouts

Send us Fan Mail You can be awake, talking, texting, even cooking dinner, and still lose the entire night. That is what blackout drinking can do, and it is as frightening as it sounds. I’m Meg, and I’m speaking plainly about binge drinking and blackouts because they were my normal for decades, starting from my very first drink at 18. I break down the difference between binge drinking (drinking a lot, fast, often with the goal of getting drunk) and blackout drinking (your brain stops forming memories even though you stay conscious). I share how alcohol first felt like relief from social anxiety and harsh self-talk, and why that early “confidence boost” can quickly turn into a pattern that steals the moments you were most excited for. Missing my 21st, forgetting big events, and waking up full of dread were not one-offs, they were the result of chasing belonging through an addictive substance. As life got busier, my drinking shifted from nights out to drinking at home, and tolerance quietly raised the stakes. One glass became two, then three, then bingeing nightly and blacking out while still “functioning” as a parent and worker. I talk about the modern fallout too: waking up to texts you regret, messages you deleted in a blackout, hidden bottles, and the daily shame of not knowing what you said or did. If alcohol is taking more than it’s giving, you don’t have to hit rock bottom. There is help, there is hope, and support can change everything. If you want to talk it through, book a free discovery call via meganwebb.com.au, and if this resonated, subscribe, share with someone who needs it, and leave a review so more people can find honest conversations like this. The Real Reasons I Drank Alcohol

Send us Fan Mail Alcohol is everywhere, so it can feel like you’re the weird one if you don’t want a drink and that’s exactly the trap. We’re told alcohol is “normal” for birthdays, weddings, girls’ nights, stress, sadness, and even just getting through the week, yet we rarely talk honestly about what it’s doing to our bodies, our mental health, and our relationships. I’m Meg, and I’m sharing the real reasons I drank, not to shock you, but to tell the truth many of us recognise quietly. We unpack the cultural double standard that shrugs off binge drinking while shaming dependence, as if the addictive substance disappears and the person becomes the problem. I trace my timeline from my first drink at 18 to the moment I realised alcohol wasn’t a treat anymore it was a tool. Anxiety relief was the early hook, then drinking became a reward, then a way to “cope” with work and parenting pressure, and eventually a way to switch off, escape, and feel nothing. That shift matters for anyone exploring sobriety, mindful drinking, quitting alcohol, or understanding alcohol dependence, because it changes the question from “what’s wrong with me?” to “what need is this meeting?” You’ll hear the turning point: alcohol never solved the underlying problems, it only gave temporary relief, then added shame, regret, exhaustion, and more anxiety on top. I share practical reflection prompts you can use straight away, like “What does alcohol do for me?”, “What job am I giving alcohol?”, and “What feeling am I trying to avoid?” If you want a kinder, clearer way to understand your drinking, press play, then subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find this conversation. Ten Lessons I learnt from Quitting alcohol!

Send us Fan Mail You don’t need a DUI, a breakup, or a health crisis to question your drinking. I’m Meg, and I’m sharing the top 10 things I’ve learned since quitting alcohol, because the biggest shift for me wasn’t “fixing a problem” it was choosing a better life before things got worse. If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re “bad enough” to stop, this conversation is for you. I talk honestly about the sneaky ways alcohol can affect anxiety, sleep, motivation, brain fog, and that feeling of being disconnected from yourself. I also unpack why the first few weeks of sobriety can feel uncomfortable or even more anxious, and why that doesn’t mean alcohol-free living isn’t working. Your routines and your nervous system are adjusting, and there are practical ways to get through those evenings when you’d usually reach for wine. We go deeper into the emotional side too: learning to actually feel your feelings again, grieving alcohol even when you know it’s not serving you, and replacing what drinking used to do for you with new rituals and real support. I share what changed in my relationships, why some friendships naturally fade, and how new connections can grow when you’re living in alignment. Then there’s the bonus lesson that matters most: being ready isn’t a feeling, it’s a decision. If you want more support, I’m also launching my 12-week program for women, The Reclaimed Woman, where we work through alcohol and what sits underneath it. Listen now, then subscribe, leave a review, and share this with someone who’s alcohol-curious. What’s the one thing you hope changes if you stop drinking? Is This As Good As It Gets?

Send us Fan Mail That thought you barely dare to say out loud, “Is this as good as it gets?”, can creep in even when life looks fine on paper. I’m Meg, and I’m sharing the real story behind that question: the years of doing everything for everyone else, the creeping sense I’d lost touch with myself, and the role alcohol played in helping me tolerate a life I wasn’t truly connected to. I talk about the dreams I had as a teen, my love of communication and storytelling, and how anxiety and social phobia helped me pack those dreams away as “unrealistic”. Then came marriage, kids, bills, and responsibility. Like so many women in midlife, I kept showing up, but inside I felt lost. My drinking grew alongside that disconnection, until the inner voice got loud enough that I couldn’t ignore it anymore. We also unpack why alcohol feels like relief in the moment. Our brains avoid discomfort, and alcohol can quieten the stress response and spike dopamine, but that short-term calm isn’t the same as healing. When we numb feelings instead of processing them, we repeat the cycle and lose clarity about what we actually need. The good news is those neural pathways can change, and putting down the booze can create the space to hear yourself again. If you’ve been wondering about sobriety, alcohol recovery, or what it means to live consciously and realign with your values, this is for you. Listen through, share it with someone who needs it, and if it helps, please subscribe and leave a review so more people can find the show. What does “more” mean to you right now? Why "Am I an alcoholic" could be the wrong question.

Send us Fan Mail You can look “fine” and still be struggling with alcohol. If you’ve ever held it together on the outside while quietly worrying about sleep, anxiety, confidence, or how often you’re thinking about that next drink, I’m speaking straight to you. I’m Meg, and I’m opening this podcast with a topic that keeps people stuck for years: the stigma around the word “alcoholic”. I share why I don’t use that label for my own experience, what Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) actually means, and why the all-or-nothing idea of “either you’re an alcoholic or you’re fine” doesn’t match real life. We talk about the grey area so many people live in: setting rules, promising “just one”, waking at 3am with a racing heart, and still convincing yourself it can’t be a problem because you’re high functioning. I also break down the science in plain language: how alcohol affects GABA, dopamine, and stress hormones like cortisol, why it can feel like instant relief, and why that relief comes with a rebound effect that feeds anxiety and cravings. Most importantly, we shift from shame to curiosity with better questions: Is alcohol helping me become the person I want to be? What is it costing me? How would my life feel without it? If you’ve been wondering whether your drinking is bad enough to change, take this as your permission to stop waiting. Welcome to Conscious Unbottling Podcast!

Send us Fan Mail Alcohol can feel like the only way to switch your brain off, ease social anxiety, or get through another hard day, until you realise it’s also been keeping you disconnected from yourself. I’m Meg, a trauma-informed alcohol recovery coach, and I’m kicking off Conscious Unbottling by sharing the real story behind the mic: years of hiding anxiety, using alcohol to cope, and the quiet cost of losing confidence, self-trust, and direction. After giving up alcohol four and a half years ago, everything changed, not overnight, but through healing. The hardest part wasn’t missing the drink; it was meeting the authentic version of myself underneath it. We explore the nervous system, core wounds, self-worth, boundaries, and how to build a life you no longer want to escape from. But Conscious Unbottling is about more than alcohol. It’s about unbottling the pain, shame, trauma, beliefs, and emotions we’ve carried for years instead of numbing them. In future episodes, we’ll have honest conversations about alcohol freedom, trauma-informed healing, somatics, people-pleasing, perfectionism, relationships, narcissistic abuse recovery, identity, and purpose, with practical coaching tools and expert guests. Whether you're questioning your drinking, already alcohol free, or simply craving a more meaningful life, you're in the right place. Sober Summits Maggie Klaassen's interviews Meg

Send us Fan Mail Join us for Meg's interview for the Sober Summit with Maggie Klaassen's. Why can some people take or leave alcohol while others feel trapped in a drinking cycle? At 17, a panic attack in front of her class sparked years of social anxiety. At 18, alcohol felt like magic—it stopped the shaking and gave her confidence. Weekend drinks slowly turned into nightly home drinking, eventually reaching two bottles of wine a night. In this conversation, Meg shares how hidden traumas and core beliefs—like feeling unlovable or not enough—fuel drinking. Alcohol may feel like relief, but it often worsens the anxiety we’re trying to escape. Her journey to freedom began with asking why she drank and uncovering the wounds beneath, leading her to help others heal and reconnect with their authentic selves. If you’re questioning your drinking or supporting someone who is, this episode offers hope, compassion, and the reminder that change is a process—one that begins with curiosity. Blackout Drinking!

Send us Fan Mail I never imagined that so many special memories in my life would be a blur. The harsh reality of alcohol-induced blackouts left a mark on what should have been some of the clearest and happiest days of my life. Tune in as I, Meg, unravel the harrowing connection between these blackouts and anxiety, and the role they've played in my own journey. It's a stark look at the silent battle many face, as the quest to ease social nerves can lead to moments lost in time and the frightening inability to form memories. This episode isn't just a personal reflection—it's a broader discussion on the perilous impact of alcohol misuse on society, from the risks of domestic violence to the tough conversations we must have with our loved ones about safe drinking practices. Through my story, and experiences, we explore the importance of awareness around how and why blackouts occur when it comes to alcohol. If you're grappling with these challenges or know someone who is, this conversation aims to offer a guiding light to those ready to step towards understanding and breaking free from alcohol's grip.
