    Չարքասթ #28 I Գրիգոր Զոհրապ I Փոստալ I

English In this episode of Charcast, we explore the literature of Grigor Zohrab, one of the most distinctive voices of Western Armenian literature. We discuss his sharp observation of human nature, social customs, morality, and the contradictions of a society caught between tradition and change. At the center of the episode is Zohrab’s short story “Postal” (Փոստալ), a story that raises uncomfortable questions about puritanical morality, social hypocrisy, and the way society judges women. Who is truly “immoral” — the woman condemned by society, or the society that condemns her? We discuss the story’s characters, social context, and why Zohrab’s critique remains relevant today.

The Odyssey is an ancient Greek epic poem attributed to the blind poet Homer. It narrates the perilous and adventure-filled journey of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, as he strives to return home after the fall of Troy. During this ten-year voyage, the hero encounters ferocious monsters, powerful sorceresses, and the wrath of the gods, while his faithful wife, Penelope, and son, Telemachus, are forced to deal with treacherous suitors trying to seize his kingdom. The poem is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of world literature, reflecting the power of human will, ingenuity, and loyalty. It is not only an ancient mythological tale but also a symbolic representation of how humans overcome life's hardships to reach their ultimate destination. To this day, the word "odyssey" is used globally to describe any long, eventful, and challenging journey.

Vahan Teryan (1885–1920) was one of Armenia's greatest lyric poets and a major figure in modern Armenian literature. Born in the village of Gandza (now in Georgia), he studied in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, where he developed his literary talent and became involved in political and cultural activities. His first poetry collection, Twilight Dreams, brought him widespread recognition for its emotional depth and musical language. Teryan's poetry often explores themes of love, nature, melancholy, autumn, and the Armenian homeland. In addition to writing poetry, he translated works from several European languages and played an active role in public life. He died of tuberculosis at the age of 34, but his poems remain among the most beloved works in Armenian literature.

His masterpieces—deeply rooted in the folklore, legends, and breathtaking landscapes of his native Lori region—brilliantly capture the spirit, struggles, and enduring hope of the Armenian people. Renowned for his iconic poems like Anoush and The Capture of Tmkaberd, as well as his timeless fairy tales, Toumanian wrote with a profound simplicity that resonates across generations. Beyond his pen, he was a grand humanitarian and public figure whose tireless efforts for peace and refugee relief earned him a legacy as a true national treasure.

Hovhannes Grigoryan (1945–2013) stands as one of the most original and influential figures in contemporary Armenian poetry, credited with revolutionizing poetic language by steering it away from traditional pathos and heavy rhetoric. His work is characterized by a signature subtle irony, the use of clear, everyday language, and a profound focus on the inner world of the "common man." Grigoryan carved out a unique literary space where serious existential and national issues were presented with a light, sometimes satirical touch, yet always grounded in deep philosophical undercurrents. Within his creative universe, themes of human solitude, love, and the transience of time take center stage, often expressed through the poignant principle of "a smile through tears." Beyond his role as a poet, he was a skilled translator and editor, breathing new life into Armenian letters through collections like A Completely Different Autumn and Between Two Wars. Grigoryan’s poetry remains strikingly relevant today due to its raw sincerity and his exceptional ability to perceive the extraordinary and eternal within the most mundane aspects of daily life.
