108: Sparta's Persian Gamble
Sparta’s biggest breakthrough after Sicily isn’t a new tactic or a better admiral. It’s cash, and Persia is willing to pay. The problem is that Persian money comes with Persian priorities, and those priorities don’t include a powerful Spartan navy controlling the Aegean. I trace how the Ionian War heats up in 412–411 BC, from the fighting around Miletus to the scramble for control of Chios and the shock of Rhodes breaking away from the Athenian Empire. We watch Athens absorb losses, regroup from Samos, and keep fleets at sea even while allies revolt.
