Special Episode: Timothy L. Michuda on the musicality of ‘Turing’

On today’s episode, Matt Tamanini is in conversation with composer and lyricist Timothy L. Michuda. Along with Ben Ward, the pair have written the musical “Turing,” based on the life of legendary mathematician and wartime codebreaker Alan Turing. Not only was Turing instrumental in the Allied Powers’ fight against the Nazis in World War II, but later in life, he was put on trial for being gay during an era when homosexuality was criminalized. In their conversation, Matt and Timothy discuss why Turing’s complicated life called out to be musicalized and why the writers chose to divide his life into three distinct chapters, but rather than tell them chronologically, to interweave them to bring attention to patterns and puzzles found in his history. The first three songs from the “Turing” EP are available now wherever you get your music, with three more tracks being released on Friday, Oct. 9. Listen to the “Turing” tracks here: https://www.turingmusical.com/

Flea Market recap Reviews: PF + MP: Degenerates @ Playwrights Horizons, through November 1, 2026 Written by Else Went Directed by Emma Rosa Went The boys are fucked. And they know it. In their own obscure corner of the internet, they offer each other proof that the game is rigged against men: it was over before it began, they will never be loved, better just to lay down and rot. When an unexpected relationship begins to form, the consequences of the boys’ fatalism are made painfully clear. Degenerates offers a telescopic, darkly funny view of one insular community, formed on the bedrock of shared and infinite miseries. PF: Human Things @ The West End Theatre, through October 18, 2026 Two-time Tony Award winner Victoria Clark (Kimberly Akimbo), Rebeca Robles (Fires, Ohio), Ben Rosenfield (HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire”), and Tony Award nominee Michael Mulheren (Bright Star; Kiss Me, Kate) are set to star in the world premiere of the new play Human Things, written by Joshua Owen and directed by Rory McGregor. Greg (Rosenfield) and Margaret (Robles) are on the rocks. More specifically – they are on an atoll in the South Pacific where Margaret is studying a dwindling population of migratory birds and Greg is doing… something. He’s not quite sure what he’s doing, actually. He’s doing his best. When Bo (Mulheren) and Darce (Clark) arrive, stranded, having crashed their beloved Hula-Hoop into a nearby coral reef – they bring with them a storm that threatens to reshape the world in ways both big and small. MP: Patti LuPone: A Life in Notes @ 92Y Geffen Stage at Kaufmann Concert Hall, October 1, 2026 Broadway royalty and triple Tony Award winner Patti Lupone opens the new Tisch Music season with a one-night-only concert of the songs that have been touchstones in her remarkable life on and off the stage. Celebrated for her iconic performances on Broadway in Company, Gypsy, Evita, and more, LuPone dips into a personal songbook blending the musical theater anthems she owns with intimate standards and classic pop in a show that weaves songs and stories together in one unforgettable night. Conceived by Scott Wittman Written by Jeffrey Richman Music direction and arrangements by Joseph Thalken Strings: Brad Phillips PF: Irish Repertory Theatre’s production of Eugene O’Neill’s The Hairy Ape, through November 15, 2026 Directed by Ciarán O’Reilly (Ulster American), The Hairy Ape will begin previews September 25, 2026, with an opening night set for October 4, for a limited run through November 15, 2026, on Irish Rep’s Francis J. Greenburger Mainstage (132 West 22nd Street). MP: New York Philharmonic and Brian Stokes Mitchell Classical Music Is in Crisis. Gustavo Dudamel Is Here to Save It. This week marks the start of the Gustavo Dudamel era in New York. The superstar conductor was just 28 when he became the musical director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2009. A native of Venezuela and a product of its El Sistema musical training program, Dudamel quickly established himself not just as a great conductor, but also as a cultural force of nature. In his time in Los Angeles, he expanded the Philharmonic’s repertoire, created a successful youth outreach program, won prestigious awards and ingratiated himself with Hollywood elite. Now, after 17 years in Los Angeles, Dudamel is taking the helm at one of the world’s most famous and storied orchestras: the New York Philharmonic. It’s a job once held by Leonard Bernstein, and Dudamel is hoping to follow in Bernstein’s footsteps to make the Philharmonic and the music that it plays a bigger part of the pop culture landscape. On today’s episode, Joshua Barone, who covers classical music for The Times, discusses Dudamel, what he’s accomplished and the high hopes for his tenure with the New York Philharmonic. PF: creation stories and all the important importants @ LCT3 / Claire Tow Theater, through November 15, 2026 A New Play By Mfoniso Udofia Directed By Tamilla Woodard Centering on a midlife Black woman pulled between her many selves—child, future daughter, artist, possible mother—the play pulses with longing as its heroine races against the clock and the limits of her own body. Moving across time and space, from ancestor to AI, from dream cycle to IVF cycle, through music and ritual, Udofia weaves her own surprising folktale on the cost of creation and the impossible work of becoming. Discussion: Shuffle Along Reunion Concert to Be Broadcast on PBS in 2027 By Margaret Hall Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Billy Porter, Adrienne Warren, Brandon Victor Dixon, and more returned to recreate the 2016 musical. Future Episodes: Peter’s Brainteaser: He is still considered one of the most esteemed playwrights in Broadway history. His second-longest running Broadway play has had multiple revivals. It has not one, but two married couples where the wife’s first name has three letters and the husband’s first name has six. Who’s the playwright? What’s the play? Reviews: PF: The Dining Room @ Antrim Playhouse (Tappan, NY), through October 4, 2026 Set in the dining room of a typical well-to-do household, The Dining Room is a mosaic of interrelated scenes – some funny, some touching, some rueful – which, taken together, create an in-depth portrait of a vanishing species: the upper-middle-class WASP. The actors change roles, personalities and ages with virtuoso skill as they portray a wide variety of characters, from little boys to stern grandfathers, and from giggling teenage girls to Irish housemaids. Each vignette introduces a new set of people and events: a father lectures his son on grammar and politics; a boy returns from boarding school to discover his mother’s infidelity; a senile grandmother doesn’t recognize her own sons at Christmas dinner; a daughter, her marriage a shambles, pleads futilely to return home. Dovetailing swiftly and smoothly, the varied scenes coalesce, ultimately, into a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humor and abundant human MP: The Sound of Music @ The Paris Theater JM: Schmigadoon! He’s not quite sure what he’s doing, actually. He’s doing his best. When Bo and Darce arrive, stranded, having crashed their beloved boat, Hula-Hoop, into a nearby coral reef, they bring with them a storm that threatens to reshape the world in ways both big and small. The show stars Victoria Clark, Rebeca Robles, Ben Rosenfield, and Michael Mulheren. Purchase tickets to see ‘Human Things’ at the West End Theater: https://ci.ovationtix.com/37108

Reviews: MP: The Ford/Hill Project @ BAM, September 8-20, 2026 CREATED BY : Elizabeth Marvel and Lee Sunday Evans “The Ford/Hill Project performs one of theater’s most noble and necessary functions: to shine a light on character itself, to attune the populace to how a person’s acts betoken who they are, and to prompt the polis to pay attention.” – DC Theater Arts 30 years apart, Anita Hill and Christine Blasey Ford provoked a reckoning about who is given the power to shape the future of our country by telling the story of one of the most private moments of their lives in one of the most public settings imaginable. With an ensemble of four actors speaking from the verbatim transcripts of these pivotal hearings, these two women’s stories can be seen side by side in a new light in Waterwell’s illuminating new production which we are honored to bring to two of the country’s most prestigious theaters in the weeks leading up to the consequential 2024 election. Long Wharf Theatre At Quinnipiac University & Southern Connecticut State University New Haven, CT September 19-27, 2026 Middlebury College Middlebury, VT September 30-October 1, 2026 Williams College Williamstown, MA October 2-3, 2026 PF: Pre-Existing Condition @ Greenwich House Theater, January 8, 2027 The critically acclaimed production, and New York Times Critic’s Pick, will feature Academy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Lupita Nyong’o, Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Edie Falco, Tony and Emmy Award nominee Phillipa Soo, Actor Award nominee Hari Nef, and Tony Award nominee Susannah Flood, performing the alternating role of ‘A.’ The cast will also include Drama Desk Award nominee Greg Keller, Pulitzer Prize finalist Dael Orlandersmith, and Drama Desk Award winner Sarah Steele, reprising their roles from the production’s run at the Connelly Theater. Nyong’o will perform the role of ‘A’ through September 26. Pre-Existing Condition, written by Tony Award nominee Marin Ireland and directed by Tony Award nominee Maria Dizzia, offers an “unfiltered examination of how violence imprints itself on the body and soul” (New York Theatre Guide). The play centers on an unnamed woman, brought to life in sequential engagements by the formidable Lupita Nyong’o, Phillipa Soo, Susannah Flood, Hari Nef and Edie Falco, alongside a powerhouse returning cast featuring Dael Orlandersmith, Sarah Steele, and Greg Keller. Staged at the historic Greenwich House Theater, Pre-Existing Condition explores the quiet challenges and everyday indignities of moving forward after a life-altering relationship. Haddad Choreography by Jennifer Rias Directed by Danny Sharron Ryan J. Haddad returns to The Public with his joyous, moving new play GOOD TIME CHARLIE. As a young man, Charlie dreamt of a life on the stage, but his parents thought dentistry sounded better, so he channeled his passion for culture into his nephew Ryan—a fellow theater-loving gay kid with Broadway ambitions. Spanning more than three decades, GOOD TIME CHARLIE is a multigenerational story of gay men growing up, falling in love, and cherishing the arts. Directed by Danny Sharron, this comedic, theatrical love letter celebrates the people who teach us how to dream. What are we looking forward to this fall? Reviews: MP: Merrily We Roll Along @ Signature Theatre (Arlington, VA), through November 1, 2026 PF: Cat Cohen: Broad Strokes @ the Lucille Lortel Theatre, through September 25, 2026 Cat Cohen: Broad Strokes is written by and starring Cat Cohen, with music by Cohen and David Dabbon, and directed by Alex Timbers. After suffering a stroke at 30 caused by a literal hole in her heart, comedian Cat Cohen transforms this near-death experience into a wildly funny, song-filled one-woman show about mortality, hypochondria and the undeniable thrill of being the main character. Equal parts confessional comedy and sparkling musical cabaret, Cat Cohen: Broad Strokes is Cohen at her sharpest, funniest, and most fabulously vulnerable. MP: Paranormal Activity @ August Wilson Theatre, through January 3, 2027 When You Close Your Eyes, What Do You See? James and Lou move from Chicago to London for a fresh start. But as the young couple settles into their new home, Lou is certain that something isn’t right, and before long they will both have to grapple with the same truth: places aren’t haunted, people are. An entirely new story inspired by the iconic film series, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY comes to Broadway direct from smash-hit, critically acclaimed runs in Chicago, Los Angeles, and London. Now in performances for a limited time only. PF + MP: The Max Hunter Company presents The Pass @ La Mama, extended through September 18, 2026 A hotel room in Eastern Europe, 2014. On the eve of their first Champions League match, two rising British football stars find themselves facing something neither preseason training nor media coaching could prepare them for. John Donnelly’s The Pass is directed by Max Hunter (Bull) and stars Matisse Ratron-Neal (Girl Says Woman Says Man Says), Terry Bell (The Skin of Our Teeth), Ino Badanjak (Queens), and Oliver Rowland-Jones (Oedipus). The Pass features set design by Seth Byrum, lighting design by Cheyenne Sykes, costume design by Amanda Roberge, sound design by Megan Culley, prop design by Thomas Jenkeleit, video design by Dwight Bellisimo, and intimacy coordination by Alysia Homminga. PF: The House of the Negro Insane @ 59e59, through September 6, 2026 By Terence Anthony Directed by Daniel Carlton With Benjamin Rowe, Rob Penty, Wadiah Waliah, and Sidney Hatcher The year is 1935. For years, Attius has lived behind the imposing walls of Central State Hospital – one of only seven US psychiatric institutions built to house “insane and idiotic negroes” – where the homeless and destitute are confined alongside the diseased and the criminally insane. Attius has carved out a meager existence within the hospital building coffins, quietly crafting the final boxes for those who will never see freedom again. But everything changes when two new patients arrive, and Attius is forced to confront a possibility he buried long ago – a chance at life beyond the walls. MP: Safe House @ Theater Row, through September 13, 2026 Safe House is a family drama set in the days leading up to a U.S. presidential election. Convinced the second American civil war is imminent, Rock, a father secretly dying of a hereditary neurodegenerative disease, becomes consumed by the need to protect his family. In the basement of his Pennsylvania suburban home, transformed, beam by beam, into a doomsday bunker, he has built what he believes is the last safe place on earth. But when his estranged teenage daughter returns home pregnant, the tensions that have long simmered beneath the surface of the household break open, and the father’s obsession with safety turns into something else entirely. What follows is a reckoning with fear, and the consequences of confusing love with control. The cast will feature Tony Award-winner Karen Ziemba and three-time Tony Award-nominee Marc Kudisch alongside Anna Roman, Grace Church, Justin Lee Miller, Glenn Seven Allen, and Julianna Layne. PF: The Real Ivanov @ The Lynn F. Angelson Theater, through September 19, 2026 A comedy about despair In the course of a year, Nikolai Ivanov—mid-30s, once charismatic and admired—has become overwhelmed and depressed. Everyone around him thinks they know why. Ivanov isn’t convinced. Laura Strausfeld’s faithful, fast-paced, and gripping adaptation captures the central insight of Chekhov’s first masterpiece: misunderstanding one another is both comic and calamitous. “I don’t understand you, you don’t understand me, and least of all do we understand ourselves.” Discussion: Future Episodes: Peter’s Brainteaser: What do Arthur Kopit and Theodore S.
