MI6 Veteran Warns Against Politicizing Intelligence; World Robot Conference

President Donald Trump is betting new sanctions and economic pressure can force Tehran to accept a deal to end the war on US terms. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps may be impervious to such pressure and has plenty of ways to retaliate, including military strikes across the Gulf. The US economic pressure campaign is having an impact, risking one of Iran's worst ever economic crises, but it's unclear if it will lead to Iran's capitulation or further retaliation. Also this weekend, China’s humanoid robot makers now control 97% of global shipments, giving Beijing an early lead over US rivals. At the World Robot Conference in Beijing, robots sort boxes, handle laundry and bag clothes. On today's show, Bloomberg This Weekend hosts Christina Ruffini and David Gura speak with: - Former Head of MI6 Sir Richard Dearlove, on his concerns about politicization and personnel changes inside the CIA. - Bloomberg News Reporter Allen Wan at the World Robot Conference in Beijing, where Unitree declared that humanoid robots could take off commercially in just two years. - Kim Ghattas, Distinguished Fellow at Columbia University’s Institute of Global Politics, on how sanctions are targeting Iran's weakened regional network. - Nathan Grawe, Professor of Economics at Carleton College, on how US colleges are facing a shrinking student population. Meta Faces Landmark Trial; Peptides for Pets

Meta faces a landmark federal trial brought by 29 states over allegations that Facebook and Instagram were deliberately designed to addict young users and that the company improperly collected children’s data. The case could expose Meta to substantial penalties and potentially more consequential court-ordered changes to how its platforms operate. Also this weekend, pet owners are spending money on experimental treatments they believe will help their pets live better and longer lives, including peptide injections, red-light therapy, and nutritional supplements. Some pet owners are giving their pets rapamycin, a drug that has shown promising anti-aging properties in studies with mice, despite the lack of official results on its effectiveness in dogs and cats. Governors Talk Affordability; AI Complicates Dating

Governors from Oklahoma, Maryland and Delaware say states remain the nation's laboratories of democracy, sharing policy ideas on housing, education, child care and energy while arguing that affordability is the top concern for voters across party lines. They say states cannot control inflation or global energy prices but can lower costs through housing supply, consumer protections, child care investments and policies that encourage economic growth while managing the impact of AI and data centers. Also this weekend, AI is dividing people not just over what the technology can do, but what kind of future they want to live in. A survey of 3,500 young people in the US conducted by dating app Hily found 64% of Gen Z and 56% of millennial daters said they wouldn’t date someone who relies on AI for everyday decisions. India's Cockroach Protests; Netanyahu's Challenger

The Cockroach Janta Party, which led India’s biggest student protests in years, wants to build a nationwide movement to hold the government accountable for its promises to young people, one of its senior members said. The “Cockroach” party, which was created by a Boston University graduate Abhijeet Dipke, helped to channel youth anger over repeated exam paper leaks and other failures in the education system. Last week, the group drew tens of thousands of protesters onto the streets of New Delhi, with demonstrations quickly spreading to other cities across the country and opposition parties rallying behind its demands. Also this weekend, Gadi Eisenkot, a former head of Israel’s armed forces, has emerged as the main challenger to Benjamin Netanyahu in upcoming elections. Eisenkot is seen as a stark contrast to Netanyahu in style, and his background and policies have given him a degree of support among Israelis, but he will face tough challenges in forming a stable new coalition. On today’s show, Bloomberg This Weekend hosts David Gura and Christina Ruffini speak with: - Dan Strumpf, Bloomberg News Senior Reporter, on the Cockroach Janta Party's influence over young people in India. - David Remnick, Editor of The New Yorker and Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author, on Gadi Eisenkot emerging as a challenger to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. - Randall Williams, Bloomberg News Senior Sports Reporter, on FIFA President Gianni Infantino abandoning a controversial plan to create a commercial entity that would have opened the door to outside investors for the World Cup. US Pauses Strikes on Iran; Miami vs NYC

The US paused an almost two-week run of strikes against Iran for a second night while the Islamic Republic signaled it was refraining from any retaliatory attacks and held talks with Oman over the Strait of Hormuz. Skirmishes between Yemen's Houthi militants and Saudi Arabia have ratcheted up tensions, with the Houthis firing missiles and drones at Saudi facilities and the Saudi-led coalition responding with strikes on Houthi military positions. Also this weekend, Miami's ultra-luxury real estate market is on track to shatter records in 2026, outpacing sales in New York City and the Bay Area as wealth continues to migrate to low-tax states. In the first six months of the year, 24 condos and single-family homes closed for over $30 million in Miami-Dade county, nearly double the number sold during the same period last year. On today’s show, Bloomberg This Weekend hosts David Gura, Christina Ruffini, and Lisa Mateo speak with: - Becca Wasser, Bloomberg Economics Defense Lead, and Chris Kennedy, Bloomberg Economics Economic Statecraft Lead, on the US pausing strikes against Iran for a second night. - Mark Lawrence Schrad, Author of "Vodka Politics: Alcohol, Autocracy, and the Secret History of Russian State," on how vodka is hard-wired into the Russian political system. - Mike McGlone, Bloomberg Intelligence Senior Commodity Strategist, on how the Miami metropolitan area is becoming more expensive than New York City. Also this weekend, US measles cases in 2026 have already outpaced last year’s total and have reached a level not seen in more than three decades, with 2,318 confirmed infections reported. America Celebrates July 4th; Trump Accounts Arrive

President Donald Trump gave a speech on the National Mall after thunderstorms delayed the start of his remarks, celebrating the nation's 250th anniversary and highlighting his own political priorities. Trump declared communism a "loser" and pushed for passage of a measure to restrict mail-in voting and require the use of voter identification for elections, while also inviting veterans to the stage. Also this weekend, Trump Accounts arrive with a powerful promise: Give a child a head start, let decades of compound growth do the work and potentially build millions of dollars over a lifetime. Iran Says Hormuz Is Closed Again; Sit-Down with Sen. Warnock

Iran said it has closed the Strait of Hormuz for shipping transit due to what it called Israel’s violation of a ceasefire, even as Pakistan said US-Iran talks were set to open in Switzerland on Sunday. The Hormuz action casts a new cloud over the talks, which are aimed at permanently ending a conflict that’s thrown the Middle East into disarray. The immediate impact on vessel traffic was unclear, but even before the recent ceasefire, millions of barrels of oil had been quietly escaping the waterway each day. Iran’s joint military command said the closure is Iran’s first step in response to Israel’s continued attacks in southern Lebanon, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Saturday. On today’s show, Bloomberg This Weekend hosts David Gura, Christina Ruffini, and Lisa Mateo speak with: - Dan Williams, Bloomberg News Jerusalem Reporter, and Daniel Tannebaum, Global Anti-Financial Crime Practice Leader and partner with Oliver Wyman, on the US-Iran talks set to open in Switzerland on Sunday and the latest in Iran. - Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia, on voting rights, Elon Musk, America 250, and his new book The Crooked Places Made Straight. - James Woolcock, Bloomberg News UK Politics Reporter, on Prime Minister Keir Starmer facing new calls to resign following the election of Andy Burnham to Parliament.
