Bleachmouth Postscript

bleachmouthps

The Postscript features rambling, off-the-cuff discussions with friends, musicians, writers and artists of all types about 5 records (or songs) they love. You’ll hear some hot and not-so-hot takes, as well as strongly held opinions and harsh criticisms. You’ll also hear much milder opinions along with facts and factual errors of all kinds. But hey, it is all about having fun conversations, as well as discovering new music and old gems, hidden or otherwise.

Episode 127: Aaron Melnick (Integrity, Inmates, Final Agony, Nuclae)

"Speaking of unhinged....." Aaron Melnick wear a lot of hats, but he is best known as the guitarist of Integrity. A band through which his impact on "extreme music" has been severe. But, Aaron is not one to rest on his laurels and has put in work through his other bands; In Cold Blood, Inmates, Nuclae as well as Final Agony. He's also published a novel as a companion to Nuclae entitled "Bringing Out the Beast". So of course he'd make a great guest..... It took a while to make it happen, but it was worth the wait. Episode 126: Lex Walton (Sub Pop recording artist)

"Like Cream, but without the fascist guitar player" Lex Walton (née Alex) is an American songwriter, actress, prose poet, and filmmaker, whose work is defined by an unflinching confessionality and live performances by ecstatic masochism and flailing. In addition to her catalog of a dozen or so mostly home-recorded albums, EPs and singles, she has also recorded collaborations with Devi McCallion (Black Dresses, Girls Rituals), Geese, and Ezra Furman, written the pop music manifesto The Sound Rocker's Prayer, and starred as lead character "Circle" in Louise Weard's five-hour epic film Castration Movie Anthology II: The Best Of Both Worlds. I had the chance to talk with Lex and she introduced me to a lot of cool music. Her new Sub Pop release is out now and it rules.

Episode 125: Dwid Hellion (Integrity, Psywarfare)

"It sounds like music made by madmen" I don't really know Dwid. Our paths have crossed briefly in the 90s, but he is largely an unknown quantity to me. What little I do know includes his eclectic taste in music and art, which has informed his own music in profound ways. So, he makes a perfect guest for this format. Right? What took me so long to invite him on? I dunno. I am occasionally lazy and prone to overlooking the obvious.

Episode 55: Nancy Barile (author of "I'm Not Holding Your Coat")

"I'm not holding your coat." Nancy Barile has seen things. She has seen some awesome things and not so awesome things. The former has informed Nancy on how to deal with the latter and fortunately for us, she’s documented all of it in her memoir “I’m Not Holding Your Coat”. Nancy grew up a suburban, Catholic school girl that fell in love with music and eventually found her way to hardcore-punk. But, she wasn’t just a spectator content to sit on sidelines. She managed bands and booked shows during the first wave of 80’s hardcore. Nancy has also been an english teacher for the past 29 years – so naturally I was eager to speak with her about some of the music that had impacted her life. Here’s some of the artists we cover; Ohio Players, David Bowie, The O’Jays, SS Decontrol, Bad Brains and Blondie. You can order her memoir from www.bazillionpoints.com Interview originally published 3/17/2022

Episode 124: The Slayer Mix Tape (w/DX Ferris and Tim)

"Well...the world IS ending..." Slayer casts a long shadow over anything that could fall within the confines of "extreme" music. But, it is safe to say that there are more than a handful of people that might have no experience with Slayer beyond hearing their name. I thought it might be fun to put together a couple of playlists for the uninitiated. To accomplish that I invited my buddy Tim and author DX Ferris ("33 1/3: Reign in Blood" and "Slayer 66 2/3: A Metal Band Biography") to put together three unique lists. It is a LONG episode with a lot of side quests, digressions and diversions, but I had a great time doing this one. I hope you feel the same. Episode 123: Mike Burns (Radian)

"How Many Dooms Are There?" I've known guitarist Mike Burns for over 20 years. He's a tireless musician that has been in multiple bands. So, it only made sense to have him on as a guest. No thanks to ME, it just took a little longer than I had anticipated. But, here we are...finally. His current band Radian has an Lp out titled "Subterfuge". Episode 29: Tommy Shotton, Part 2

“Genuinely Nasty People” Tommy Shotton is a London based musician that cut his teeth on hardcore punk, learning to play drums along to his favorite records of the genre. We met via social media at the onset of the pandemic and have had some vigorous conversations about our favorite music. I thought it would make sense to have him do an episode. We had a great talk and I look forward to doing it again soon.Tom has just released the first single (“Back Home”) from his forthcoming long-player “Forever Home” due November 2021. You can check it out here- tomshotton.bandcamp.com Here are some of the artists/musicians we talked about; Steely Dan, Alice Cooper, Poison Idea, Zeke, Kiss, Easy Action, Buzzcocks, Circle Jerks and Wire. Episode 15: Five and Change "A Metallic KO without the Shirtless Septuagenarian"

"A Metallic KO without the Shirtless Septuagenarian" In the early 90’s Integrity’s “Those Who Fear Tomorrow” changed the face of hardcore – for better or worse. After that Lp there was a deluge of bands playing a type of hardcore that had less in common with punk and began playing metal with a hardcore aesthetic. Still, many people still called it “hardcore”. However, that’s not an indictment of the quality of the music. Some of these bands (not many) were quite good – regardless of what you called it. I talk about a few of the less heralded bands playing in this sandbox; Conviction, Darkside NYC, Starkweather, Bloodlet, Ironside, Splinter, Anguish, Cattlepress, Thoughts of Ionesco, Mayday and Turmoil. Episode 59: Five and Change "Covers"

“Covers” I love a good cover song. But, I often love the original more. I ramble on a bit about cover songs that I really, really love and some of their lesser known originals. Here are some of the artists I ramble on about; Metallica, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Tom Waits, The Meters, Ray Charles, Al Green, Blondie, Rolling Stones, Robert Johnson, Diamondhead, The Valentinos, Etta James, Memphis Minnie, The Temptations, Sister Pat Hall, T. Rex, The Nerves, Eagles, Elvis and Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup. (Original Release Date May 4, 2022)

Episode 12: Five and Change "Thrash"

“I see that you are wearing a battlevest. Might I suggest a new patch for the lapel?” YOU like thrash metal? I LOVE thrash metal. Wanna hear me speak extemporaneously about thrash metal from the 80’s? Great! No guest on this episode, but you can play a drinking game where you have to take a shot each time I say “top to bottom”. You can also check out some of my favorite, but underrated thrash records. Here are the bands I cover; Zoetrope, Sacred Reich, DBC, Prong, Coroner, Dead Horse, Nuclear Assault, Hallow’s Eve and Whiplash. (Origninally published 3/21/2021

    Episode 122: Meet Me Halfway

On this episode I sit with Derek and Rich to talk about what we've been listening to during the first half of 2026. We talk mostly hardcore, but there a few surprises as well!

Episode 121: Track for Track "NYHC"

"The Way the Wild Things Is" My buddies Derek and Alex sit down with me to do a track for track comparison of arguably the two most important hardcore compilations of the 80's; "New York City Hardcore: The Way it Is" and "New York Hardcore: Where the Wild Things Are". It is a spirited discussion with a few surprises. As a wise man from Detroit once said, "Check it Out".

Episode 53: Ian Thompsen (Fright/Down In Flames)

"Corny Tales" Ian and I met when he was the vocalist for hardcore greats Down In Flames. He is the current vocalist for Fright – who have released their debut Lp on guitarist Nate Wilson’s Gloom Records. I had a great time catching up with Ian and I hope to possibly catch Fright live this summer. You can check out Fright at the link below. In addition to the story I tell in the intro, here’s some of what I discuss with Ian; Spaceman 3, Sacrilege, Black Sabbath, Stooges, Spazm 151, Samael, Bolt Thrower, Bathory and Asschapel. https://frightthrash.bandcamp.com/ Photo: Matt Viel (Interview originally published 2/25/2022)
